Rejecting a vessel prior to survey

I wouldn’t indemnify anyone for anything related to the sale of my boat. It is strictly as is, where is subject to any issues that come up during survey and sea trial. The indemnification language appears to be increasingly popular. I’d cross it out.

I told her I didn't want to buy a boat!

FWIW- driving a big cat around a marina has been likened to driving a skid loader. I strongly agree with those that suggest chartering with a captain first. You’ll learn a lot and better define your needs. And yes, you’ll probably need a captain to sign you off to be able to get insurance. One...

    Cat 3208 TA expected longevity

You can’t rebuild in the boat as the cylinders have to be bored out and lined. They leave a trail of smog behind the boat visible forever on a calm day. Usually leave sheen of oil upon start up. If they don’t reach 2800 rpm at WOT something is wrong! They can begin to gobble oil as they age. CAT...

Rejecting a vessel prior to survey

I think it is a good idea to put in any purchase offer that you have the right to inspect the boat on multiple occasions. It is hard to see what you need to on one or two visits. A visit after a good hard rain can be very revealing. All boats have issues. The more you find before purchasing...

    Defender Marine / West Marine

When a business can make more money selling clothing, that’s what they’ll sell. I remember when Lands End was a high end marine hardware store and their catalogue used to have technical articles on sailing. Then they started to sell clothes. How many remember that?

Dear broker- it's not you, it's me?

Some random thoughts: If an engine was rebuilt there will be itemized receipts. I had no problem showing them to my buyer. Few boats are listed that weren’t “maintained by an experienced owner with an open checkbook “. If you want a $500,000 boat that’s what you’ll end up paying. The best...

    Defever 51 POC - Repower / Rebuild

I’d consider contacting T& S Marine in Crisfield, Maryland. 8 years ago they rebuilt a pair of 375 3808TA’s for me for about 14k per engine. Less than half of what the CAT folks wanted. They keep the crab boats on the bay running. It might be worth shipping them out.

    3208T 320hp overpropped

If you can’t reach 2800 RPM at WOT something is either wrong with the engine or you, as noted, are overpropped. My experience is limited to rebuilding 3208s after a catastrophic runaway. The guys doing the rebuilds said for any given RPM too much fuel was being injected. A fuel injector line...

    Dingy Lifting Straps

If the handles aren’t reliable lifting points per the manufacturer, I’d consider reevaluating your choice of tender. Trying to thread a sling under the dinghy will probably be a pain if you use it with any regularity. In fresh conditions it might be close to impossible. Full disclosure: I am...

Just saw a post on Trawler Life on Facebook with some chewed up upholstery . A compelling reason to crate. We crated all of our many dogs until they matured whenever we left them.

Advice - Diesel fuel in my engine oil

Fuel in the oil can lead to a runaway. This happened to me on a 3208 when an injector line broke under the valve cover. Not a fun experience.
