Really a good looking rig Larry. Did you have this installed or design and do it yourself?

This would be nice to see Larry. Almost everyone I see with the Paravanes is on the 40' and over boats. Anyone aware of the smaller trawlers rigged with the Paravanes? Thanks

Abaco's, Exumas, Ling Island, & Turks & Caicos

If you were in the Exumas 35 or so years ago we may have seen one another. Wasn't that much traffic back then. Anybody remember a sailing vessel named "tanaquil".

Thank Marty, I've been on Gulf Star owners forum site. Not a lot of activity there. And their asking the same questions. It seems as if nobody has added them to a gulfstar yet, or at least I haven't heard of one, Just the "offshore" trawlers seem to have gone to that expense. Bill

A lot is known about the paravanes, even how to determine what size for your boat. It may be worth it to have a local marine engineer come by the boat and see if it's possible to install a flume tank on this boat, but I have my doubts about the strength of the pilot house support framing on a...

    Too much roll

Yea, it's going to roll, all the trawlers are going to roll to different degrees, and if we want to dampen it something has to be added. Do you think bilge keels on the Gulfstar would be enough to feel a significant difference? what kind of keels or fins are you thinking of? those placed at...

OK. Didn't realize that. I have found a very interesting article on stabilizers and it has a cross section drawing of the boat and the paravane mast, arm and rigging with all the loads so you can determine the size and layout for whatever boat your working with. Iv'e been trying to download this...

Roll on the Gulfstar 36 Bill, I think I read somewhere in these forums that adding more ballast may not make that much of a difference on this hull shape.. Did you find contrary information about this? The flume tanks look interesting, simple and inexpensive, but I would have no idea as to...

    Too much roll

roll Thanks Tad, I am in agreement with the paravane stabilizers, and that is the way I want to go, I hope. Is there a company that makes the whole rig (Poles, lines, cleats ,connection plates to hull. a choice of "fish", the whole nine yards?) or does one have to piece all this together to...

    Too much roll

roll Thanks Phil Fil, I thought about added ballast also. I'm going to talk to a local surveyor also and get his opinion based on what he knows about this particular boat. Then I guess I'll just sit down on the dock and make some decisions. I've always been a sailboat person so heeling doesn't...

    Too much roll

Roll Thanks Bilgewater and FF. I like the idea of the flopper stoppers since I will be adding a mast in the first place. I was thinking about a loose footed boom, but that won't work for hauling out the dinghy. I think I would definetely have to add a support post below the mast to the keel to...

download Do have your mast mounted over a strong bulkhead below? there is just a passage way centered below my flying bridge in the aft cabin. I would think I would have to add a vertical support post from the keel up to the cabin deck.

    Too much roll

roll Thanks BW. I might try adding a mast to carry a staysail. I read thru most of the previous threads regarding options to dampen roll. Looks like it depends on the specific boat design and your pocket book. I'm wondering if anyone out there with a Gulfstar 36 has found what they consider a...

    Too much roll

Gulfstar 36. This boat doesn't have a mast where I could possiblly rig up a steadying sail. Has anyone added a mast to their trawler? If so, where would the best location be on the 36? thru the deck into the aft cabin down to the keel? or how? What other options are there for slowing down the...

    Perkins 4.236

I looked at Transatlantic web site. They do have an elbow that looks like it might fit, just a little different configuration. There $725 ea. Marine Manifold will take the original as a template and make a new one exactly like it. Their cost is about the same. If I can't find something off the...

    Perkins 4.236

I have looked everywhere for the elbows. Been told that were no longer made. The best shop I found will make them for $750 ea. plus shipping. I will have to send one of them up to there shop as a template. The previous owner of this boat kept an engine log, he was very meticulous. He has owned...

Older engines in good shape Being new to diesels, I have to ask this question. Everybody's been very helpful with me in finding a raw water exhaust elbow for my twin 4.236s. This is going to set me back almost $2000 for the pair. Stainless steel. The engines are the original from 1974. They...

Doing some work on my 1974 Gulfstar 36' trawler with twin perkins 4.236 diesels. Having a hard time finding some parts, right now specifically, a pair of raw water exhaust elbows. Anybody out there have suggestions where a good place may be to look for parts? I'm in Florida, but of course I...

    38 marine trader

Hello everyone. I am about to decide on buying a 38 ft.' marine trawler built in 1979. The teak decks, of course, are shot. Is there a way for the surveyor to tell how much damage there is to the plywood subdeck? I have an estimate to allgrip the deck, but I don't think that would include any...
