    Anchor Swivel

When you use the shackle, do NOT forget to wire tie the shackle pin to prevent it from loosening. This is called "seizing". Use Stainless Steel or Monel (nickle) wire only. The Shackle pin goes thru the slot in the shank of the anchor, just in case people did not know this.

    My confidence is being effected.

Shrew nails it. Redundancy and planning for things to fail. Flexibility on things that you can control. I thought this was just me thinking like this. After 40 yrs of boating, we have been lucky ish. Simple engines, no turbos and I have learned how to repair almost anything on the boat and...

    Winterization - Antifreeze

I think you should clarify what you are trying to do. I am assuming that you have a boat with a heat exchanger inside, a closed loop cooling system? I am assuming you are winterizing the raw water side that has sea water coming into the boat, thru the heat exchangers (engine, oil and tranny...

Do you need two sets of controls on a liveaboard?

Peter on Weebles makes a very valid comment. I am not sure that you will ever find a discussion on that topic. Boating is about safety and redundancy. We all have our comfort zones and what we consider risks. Our optimism can sometimes get us in to trouble. I am a live aboard and have 2...

    Removing epoxy

Have you tried a heat gun to soften then pick them? Epoxy will soften at 250°F Maybe boiling water at 212°F if you dont have a heat gun. I would not use Acetone, it sounds like you are pretty particular about your boat. Acetone degrades gel coat.

Are the droplets cured? Hard ? Have you tried chipping them off with a chisel? You can sand them off flush also. If it is cured, then they are not really stains, right ?

Surveyor wording is a little harsh

Yes, I was present and very active in his survey. I truly wanted to know my compliance with ABYC and general safety as I have made alot of upgrades on the boat. In my Aerospace career, I frequently perform audits and when the report is delivered there should NEVER be surprises. Some items are...

Surveyor wording is a little harsh

I forgot to report the favorable outcome. I had contacted another SAMS surveyor and was completely up front with what had transpired. I even supplied him the original survey report for reference. He chuckled and said a few WTF's. He performed the survey and educated me along the way...

    Humidity and Living Aboard

Well, you are going about it the right way. I am also a live aboard in southern New England (USA). As you have said, warm air can hold more moisture. When warm air comes against colder surfaces the moisture comes out of suspension and condenses onto the cooler surface. Our problem is in the...

    Dragging Anchor

Lots of info and opinions here on this thread. I stopped reading after 15 posts, lol. I don't think anybody mentioned a catenary device. A weight that is lowered along the anchor rode to add weight to the "system" to keep the anchor shank DOWN. Kettlebells or a dive belt have worked well for...

    Fuel system plumbing question

SteveK is stating what most of us are feeling. Well written Steve. paulga take this advise with the intention that it is written. This is why I have backed away. You lack the simple experience to be messing with fuel systems etc.... Internet searches will only provide a piece of the puzzle.

I used my initials back in the day and have kept it the same on multiple forums. Creature of habit I guess.

What to mount a new water heater on

I am not a fan of starboard in structural uses over time, sagging is an issue. I would use Marine rated plywood, sand all of the edges round, drill your thru bolted holes and encapsulate it in resin , paint it to make it match the hull. Thru bolting is better than threading in wood screws.

Do new boat builders get off too easy?

I am in the Aerospace business and one of the prime engine mfg's got tired of receiving items built a the end of the month. The mindset at the supplier level was "deliver it to the customer and they will tell us what is wrong with it". Engine mfg'r got tired of this nonsense and started...

engine oil change - Ford Lehman 135sp

As others have said, Dipstick marks are factory installed at level orientation. You have to find the correct volume and make your own scribe lines sometimes. Too much oil can be as catastrophic as too little. Hard to believe, right? If your oil filter was relocated that will affect your...

engine oil change - Ford Lehman 135sp

Read the instructions on the containers, sorry for stating the obvious, but come on...... Anything that is NOT labeled or not in the original container should be thrown out legally. Marinas typically have areas for solvents and oils. Brakeleen is a great solvent for dissolving oils and greases...

    Highfield 310 issue

Be careful what type of cleaners you use also. They will break down the plastics. We had a dock neighbor that used Acetone to make his dinghy tubes look like new. It was disposed of in months.

New Member with Question Regarding Annual Maintenance Cost

Lots of information here, some specific and some pretty vague. I maintain my 1982 41' President myself. Lots of seat equity but I know every piece of my boat, how it fits and operates, including the engines. That is my choice. What is your DIY comfort zone and what engines do you have? The...

Ford Lehman high rpm’s at idle

My 120's have 4,000 hrs on them. Rock solid engines. Changing the engine and tranny coolers is a piece of cake, get t he hose kit from American Diesel also. If you call Brian at AD and provide the serial numbers he can provide some history of purchases going back yrs.

engine oil change - Ford Lehman 135sp

The waiting time to change the oil is more to allow the oil in the upper passages to drain into the pan. I never knew the 135 had the injector pump oiled my the mains. That is awesome. I change my oil in the fall or winter after a long season. The engines warm the boat too.

engine oil change - Ford Lehman 135sp

Running the engine before does 2 things. Mixes up any debris that has settled - which will happen. Raises the temperature to make the draining easier with "thinner" viscosity oil. I add about 1/2 quart of Marvel Mystery Oil oil into the oil fill prior to running. Aids in thinning and...

    Fuel system plumbing question

Fuel manifolds are the way to go as others have suggested. KTI systems (Keenan Filters) makes great diesel manifolds with ball valves attached.
