    Not using your AIS

I have a receive only setup. It came with my VHF radio and does supply interesting information. At night or in reduced visibility, the AIS information is a nice add on to the radar. I question why so many boaters don't seem to be able, or know how to turn their AIS transmitters off. I went...

    Stunning Gulfstar

I had a friend who was buying his first boat. He and his wife had settled on a boat that has the reputation of being an "ugly duckling". I told him to walk down the dock, turn around and look at the boat. If he didn't think it was the best looking boat on the dock, he should reconsider. He...

Kiteboarders and rules of the road

Friend of mine went into the Baltimore Harbor last weekend on a gusty Saturday. He said he was accosted by kiteboarders inside the six kt speed limit on the way to the inner harbor. He said they were probably doing 20 - 30 mph and coming within 10 feet of the bow and stern of his boat as they...

    Engine failure while cruising

This is from Racor: "The hollow aluminum checkball floats up against the seal when fuel is stopped, preventing fuel bleedback. If unit looses prime, inspect upstream hose connections first, disassemble unit to inspect seal and ball. (It is normal to hear a "rattling" sound at any time)."

    Inexpensive shore power cords

I bought a 50a cord from them a couple of months ago. It appears to be well made.

    Dehumidifier

I use an Extreme heater in my engine compartment. It does help keep condensation down in the winter. It is designed for use in an engine compartment, so I don't worry too much about it. There are other boat safe heaters out there, that work just as well. I don't think electric...

    Volkswagen Diesel Engine

The Germans knowingly violated government regulations. Is this worse than the Japanese (see Takata airbag recall) knowingly selling defective airbags or the Americans (General Motors) knowingly putting defective ignition switches in cars? The German problems haven't killed anyone that I know of.

    Really Annoying Ads

I use Safari 9.0.1 (El Capitan). I have popup windows blocked and use the adblock plugin. I don't see any ads at all.

    Trawlerfest - worth attending?

Went by today. The show has pretty much been cancelled. The on shore portion has been cancelled. There were boats on display and admission is free. I don't know if anyone will be there over the weekend.

    Trawlerfest - worth attending?

There are still the tents with lots of cool stuff. I plan on stopping by (I live locally).

    Storm prep

Empty out your dock box and make sure it has drain holes in it so it won't float away. Power may be out for an extended time. I plan on emptying my fridge and turning it off so I don't kill my batteries. I live close to my marina, so I can wait until the Friday forecast to take action. Still...

    Boat US Insurance

I've read the policy. It is written for lawyers. I am primarily concerned about this clause: b) We shall not cover any loss or damage arising out of: 2) Any wear and tear, gradual deterioration, weathering, inherent vice, insects, animals, vermin, mold, marine life, electrolytic or galvanic...

    Boat US Insurance

Good Points, I am going to talk to my insurance broker this week to get answers about things like muskrats and salvage. Thanks

    The Pod Parted

He said that he was told that the antifreeze could not be put in some portions of the IPS system while it was in the water. I'll ask him if it the boat could be launched and still stay properly winterized.

    New Power Cord Question

I spray a little Corrosion X on the terminals It will wick up through the cable wires giving more protection. If you want to try a grease, I wonder if a conducting grease such as NO-OX-ID would be better than non-conducting dielectric grease.

    The Pod Parted

Boat behind me on my dock has IPS drives. The owner was told by the authorized Volvo dealer in the marina that IPS drives could not be properly winterized for in water storage. They recommended that he have the boat pulled for the winter.

    Boat US Insurance

I'm not sure about the value of BoatUS coverage. I recently received a quote from BoatUS. BoatUS offered me 60% of the liability coverage, 50% of the medical payment coverage, 50% of the personal effects coverage, and twice the deductible. All for only $1000 per year more than my current...

    Genset Puzzle

You mention checking a pressure switch. Are you checking the raw water pressure sensor or the exhaust temp switch? Has the genset overheated before? I had a genset (not an Onan) overheat on a previous boat and it shutdown. The temp switch had to be replaced before it would run properly...

    What should I have done?

My experience has been that the generic 40 foot express power boat has more often put me in the position of having to maneuver to avoid them when I was the stand on vessel. I think it is a combination of ignorant operators and autopilots. They have a course set in on the autopilot and don't...

Small boat AIS Identifier vs. Transponders

It looks like it won't connect to a chart plotter to display other AIS vessels. It also appears to need a separate dock to connect it to a computer for the initial programming.

    Insurance Question

Thanks. One of the boats on my dock had an impeller come apart and the resulting overheat totaled the motor. He is dealing with his insurance now. This made me wonder if I would be covered under similar circumstances.

    Insurance Question

I was looking at an old policy and noticed that there was a difference in the Latent defect clause. My new policy states: What we cover: Hidden Defect: We shall pay for indirect physical loss or property damage caused by any hidden defect in the machinery, the hull, or any other area of your...

How have you used rescue tape?

I used it to secure the connection between a 50A cord and a 50A to twin 30A adapter.
