Running on 1 engine for fuel savings?

What you are missing is that your engine will increase fuel flow to compensate for the dead engine. Just because you dont move the throttle doesn't mean your governor is not putting in bagfuls of fuel to maintain RPM as the load it sees increases. The reason two engines are often as good as...

Awlwood MA Clear Finish - High performance Exterior Clear Coat

Any updates on how Awlwood is lasting? I am about to bite the bullet on my Cheoy Lee 66. A lot of varnish to do and back to wood on much of it.

    battery charging

An AC/DC charger is just a transformer and a rectifier. First the transformer windings take you down 110V AV to 12V AC and then the rectifier converts the 12V AC--> 12V DC. If you lose AC then nothing happens as the rectifier diodes prevent any battery charge from going back through the...

    Marine Air Condenser wont start.

So I ordered another compressor can on eBay for $105.98. Its a Tecumseh Hermetic Reciprocating AC Compressor AK111JT-004 These units are fitted to pretty much every refrigeration device in the USA and so they are reliable and cheap. It's quite a job to pull out the Marineair condenser unit...

    Marine Air Condenser wont start.

Yep its a bad compressor. I looked up the Dometic diagnostic and its drawing 33 'locked rotor amps'. Thats what I am seeing on the ships ammeter before the unit trips out with its internal safety. The good news is that replacement Tecumseh R22 compressors are cheap. I got NEW Tecumseh...

    Marine Air Condenser wont start.

I havent yet checked it on Generator power however we have 5 Marine Air condensers on the boat which are all working fine. Only 1 is refusing to start. We do only have 208V on the dock (not 220V) but for many years that has not been an issue with the condenser.

    Marine Air Condenser wont start.

I have a Marine Aire 12000BTU R22 condenser which pulls about 30 amps trying to start and then trips out. I have changed the starter and capacitor with a known good unit but still no joy. Refrigerant pressure is about 80PSI. I can see on the ships ammeter that this unit is pulling a lot of power...

    Naiad Stabilizer Knob

Here is a pic of a similar tank to mine. The 'inidicator' knob is at the far left. Its not the oil tank cap as I have been using that for filling. Its the other one with an 'arrow' indicator on it. I guess from your post, this must be the oil filter cleaing indicator. How does it work? Is it...

    Naiad Stabilizer Knob

I have Naiad 252 stabilzers and the hydraulic tank has an adjustment rotary knob on it above the main filter. Does anyone know what this knob adjusts? it can be rotated to many positions and looks like a sensitivity adjustment or something. Any help appreciated!

    P30 G43 3/8" Chain anyone?

I have a Lofrans gypsy and am replacing the anchor chain. The Lofrans is designed for 10mm P30 (30mm) links and I need high tensile (G43 or similar). Accor dont have P30 and Canada Metal does a P30 but only in G30 not G43 high tensile. I did try the Accor chain (1.22"/31mm link) and its not...

    Westerbeke WTF-25 Injector Pump leak

I've discovered a large diesel leak at the lid joint of the diesel injector pump in my genset. I've never seen a leak at the seam like this before and am wondering if it is common in Westerbeke. I'm not sure if there is a gasket or O ring there but looks like the injector pump will need to come...

    Pacific Northwest 2015

Randy, I just wrote an almost identical post to yours. Quite a coincidence that we both seek the same thing! We plan on leaving SFO in Spring and heading up to PNW for summer with our boat. Our core crew is my wife, daughter (13) and I. Our boat has similar speed and capabilities to yours. If...

    PNW Summer 2015

The good ship Sorpresa will be heading up from SFO to PNW this spring 2015. I'd be interested in meeting others with similar plans either to travel up the coast together or raft up while up there. We plant to spend all summer in PNW initially in the San Juans, then north to Desolation Sound...

    Tach problem

If your genset is charging your batteries at the same time as your tach alternator, the RPM readings can drop out. Turn the genset off and see if the problem goes away. Also as discussed, two alternators on the same battery bank can scramble the tach reading. Try one engine at a time to check.

I'm not sure when that tug photo was taken at the Delta but I just saw a similar looking tug being cut into bite size pieces by hydraulic machinery at the Sausalito port authority ramp. Pity as it looked still a good hull. PS. Here is my Delta photo cruising near Rio Vista 10 feet above the...

    The Generation Small Ocean Passagemaker

I think the type of boat you are after is the standard Northern European motor sailors. I have had many Nauticat and the Nauticat 441 is a great sailing boat as well as a super strong passagemaker under diesel. Also the traditional Dutch steel motorsailors like the wonderful De Vries out of...

    running on one engine

I've checked quite a few consumption tables on this issue and my takeway was that there was really no benefit at normal cruise speeds however there was a benefit when you slowed to very slow speeds. I attach a great table from another post. Grand Banks "Dreamer" which shows comparisons...
