Marine Trader 34DC Soft Deck Complete repair

Hi Everyone! It has been a long time since I posted anything here, life got in the way! But I thought people might be interested in following this project that I have been putting off for years. I am replacing the entire rotten core in my decks, not just small patches, all of it! Big job but...

Marine Trader 34dc Aft cabin rebuild

Hi everyone. I am thinking about doing this to my boat. Those who know the model will understand the drawing, and the reason I am contemplating it. What do you think? Am I completely mad?!? For those that don't know the model, I am going to cut the aft cabin off and turn her into a sundeck...

    M.T. Aft Cabin Bed

Mark 2 for interior layout, smaller shower stall, but more practical and would have a better symmetrical ascetic. Also there is enough head room in shower stall with this version.

    M.T. Aft Cabin Bed

So here is the idea for the interior layout. Dare I say this..... but comments welcome! :) Seriously though, I am keen to get peoples thoughts before I cut into the boat in a pretty major way. Keep in mind that I have the skills to undertake this job. I have also spent 5 years getting to know...

    M.T. Aft Cabin Bed

Sorry, I should have included the current boat design which is as per the standard 34 DC. Essentially I am going to cut off the aft cabin and build a sundeck model! :banghead::banghead::banghead:

    M.T. Aft Cabin Bed

New project to an old thread Anyone still have their boats on this thread? I am about to do this to my boat in order to create a queen size bed, and separate head and shower rooms, and loads more storage. Not to mention the deck space!!!!!! Hard core MT 34 DC owners might find it a bit tough...

MT 34DC - sliding window repairs

I searched high and low for anyone that had tackled this job before I started. Nothing to be found other than lots of other people looking for the same answers. Pleased if my write up of the job can help someone else in the future. For an update - today I glued in three sides of the sliding...

    Galley Refit

A little update. Finally got around to knocking up a draw, and installing the convection microwave. Just need to machine up a new teak draw face. And then get cooking! To answer a couple of questions, the wood is teak. The top is staron, or corrian. Not sure of the cost as it was traded for...

Glass has arrived. I must say, they did a very nice job, even rounded the corners for me! On the left of the photo is the template I gave them for the sliding glass.

What do you put on your decks

Thanks for this info. To answer the quote, I am only using the sealer because my teak is so far gone that I need to sand it and start again. The sealer applies like a regular oil, darkening the wood, but after a few hours it has dried and looks like nothing is on the wood at all. However, once...

What do you put on your decks

By the way, the two photos are after sanding the deck to remove the gouges. I have then applied a coat of Teak wonder (a few more to follow). It applies dark, and dries like there is nothing on the teak at all. Thanks for the comment so far, I will keep you posted as to whether this stuff works.

What do you put on your decks

Thanks for your feedback Marin and you are absolutely correct, but I use my boat year round, and don't keep it covered all the time. Even with covers on certain parts, the wood degrades, so I am looking at products I have not tried in the past to see if I can prevent UV and dirt from graying the...

What do you put on your decks

A revamp of a well trodden discussion here! Having spent years as a professional charter and private yacht skipper, I vowed and declared that on my boat, I would let all the teak go a weathered grey and be done with it. However, after two years of that grey look, the need to take pride in my...

    Door Project

Awesome job! I love it when a project is undertaken not only to refurbish, but to improve the original design! Looking forward to seeing how the new sliders work out. I need to do the exact same thing to my door.

MT 34DC - sliding window repairs

Next part. Spent a couple of hours today finishing off the teak frame. It was over sized so that I could trim down the inside edges in order to create the nice rounded corner detail. This was achieved with the trimmer fitted with a bearing that used the internal teak trim as a pattern. I am...

MT 34DC - sliding window repairs

Part 4 We can start to see the results as they progress on the boat whilst doing all the dry fitting of the joints. Quite a lot of back and forth, but worth it in the end. Finally I have the oversize frame dry fitted and joint glued in situ' ready for the next steps. The new sliding window...

MT 34DC - sliding window repairs

Part 3 Originally, the teak trim on these boats has been constructed with simple miter joints. As a joiner, I hate to see these joints used in serious outdoor application, so decided to replace them with half lap miter joints. Given that it is a boat, where nothing is straight or square, I...

MT 34DC - sliding window repairs

Part 2 After cleaning up the entire frame area, I bogged all the gaps and holes, then laid a layer of fiberglass cloth that covered the entire area including up the external surface of the interior teak trim. This made the whole thing water proof regardless of whether the glass or external...

MT 34DC - sliding window repairs

Okay so this will be a fairly long description of a current job that I hope may be of use to someone who may experience the same thing and need advice. During the original survey of the boat, we realized that the starboard salon sliding window had some leakage issues. The water was finding its...

    Aft Hatch Repairs

Thought I would post a few photos of a repair recently undertaken in case anyone ever needs to do the same. The runners for the aft hatch were in poor condition when we bought the boat. I did a temporary repair, but it was starting to fail causing water to leak in to the aft cabin again. I...
