    Grabbing the Mooring Bouy Ring

Just a boat hook here. Admiral up front with with the boat hook on a pole that's plenty long enough to reach the buoy. Bow thruster if my driving is a little off.

    Cruise generators....

I have a 5.4kw Fischer-Panda that does the trick for me. Runs 12 btu and 7 btu AC units, small fridge, water heater, etc. Uses a Kabota engine, is compact, and runs pretty quiet.

(Psssst!! Ignore those chemical suggestions -- MAGIC ERASER!) :)

    Vinyl cleaner

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser! They're actually melamine sponges and they work great on any textured surface. Be careful on shiny surfaces though, as they're somewhat abrasive.

    Isinglass cleaner...

Haven't used it on the curtains, but*it's a great general purpose cleaner for all sorts of hard surface and plastic stuff on the boat -- probably my most used cleaning product.

    Fuel Crisis boat trend

Indeed, there are at least three kinds of legitimate "traveling vessels" depending on one's situation. You have blue water, ocean crossing boats for those with that interest. There are coastal cruisers for those who have plenty of time to get from A to B. And then there are planing or...

    Fuel Crisis boat trend

Sounds like a sweet deal, KMA. I was looking at a similar situation with a boat I was considering -- and might have bought had they actually gone ahead and built it.

    LCD TV, DVD set-ups

Unless you're in the market for a new stereo anyway, you might want to buy a combination TV/DVD player instead of an in-dash unit. Would be cheaper and obviously less hassle to install. I wouldn't recommend a monitor in any case. About the only ones you'll find are computer monitors and they...

    Raw Water Cooling

You might think about having the fuel filtered if the boat's been sitting that long. Could be a lot of junk at the bottom of the tank(s) that will get good and stirred up for the first time in a long time.

    Key West

I like it. Now add a wax/detailing service to go along with that and you might really have something. Kick back in the saloon with a beer and watch the sweaty, bikini-clad coeds go to work with the buffers. :) Course you'd have to talk the admiral into abandoning ship for the day, which...

    Electric Boat Engines

Different application, of course, but it's pretty standard for bigger boats to have large and small gensets for different applications, i.e., to optimize loading. Any reason you couldn't have twins powering the same shaft to serve the dual purpose of providing extra power when necessary or as...

    Adding chain

I think he's concerned that the connecting link would lower the overall strength of the chain, i.e., it's only as strong as its weakest link.

    Electric Boat Engines

In fact there are hybrid sailboats that use the equivalent of dynamic breaking, i.e., they have a prop that spins while under way and regenerates the batteries.

    Going green

Hmm, having to run the genset basically negates any advantage for me given that, with our mild climate, I can just run the reverse cycle AC units to provide heat. Gotta run the noisemaker either way.

    Electric Boat Engines

Some of the consumer DE systems, e.g., Island Pilot and the electric Leopard, do have the option of running the electric motors from battery banks, although that can obviously only take you so far even with a large bank.

    Isinglass cleaner...

I use Imar on my Strataglass and it works well. They have a nice boat soap too (doesn't take off wax like some others). Pricey though.

Hey Fred, I'm curious about your objections to Espar. The boat I just bought has one onboard. Not that I'll need it much in SoFla, but ....

    Electric Boat Engines

"Diesel electric propulsion for a boat means that in stead to have a gearbox attach to the shaft, you have a generator attached to the main engine and an electric motor turning the shaft. There is no talk of batteries of any sort." Maybe I am confused, but I thought that the genset *was* the...

    Electric Boat Engines

Yep. :) 1) It isn't a choice of running a *separate* generator to charge the batteries vs. running an engine/alternator, it's a choice between running a generator in *place* of the engine/alternator; 2) For sure, bigger props will reduce draft and increase cost; the author was only...

    Electric Boat Engines

There's a good article on this subject in the current (4-08) issue of Power Cruising. Here's the short form: diesel electric *used to have* a greater advantage because older diesel mains were inefficient when operating at lower loads; the generator, OTOH, can run at its optimum load at all...
