I liked having the TF app. Any plans to develop a new one?

Twin to Single conversion- Oh My!

"If you are considering a boat with a hollow keel that was offered as a single or twin, the conversion isn't that difficult." I just came upon this old thread, and the comment above. Here's a photo of a Defever 49 trawler and it looks like this boat must have been available as a single.

Trawler Stability - 2nd Opinion Wanted

Good job A-L. You did your due diligence and were objective enough to walk away

    Older Vessels

@Capt Pappy you might not like hearing this but if you are interested in buying an older 40-50 year old vessel then I'd suggest you head up to the Pacific NW. You'll find boats up here which have been kept covered in boathouses for the last 20 years and those are about the only ones whose wood...

Trawler Stability - 2nd Opinion Wanted

Out of curiosity, measure the roll period at the dock. I believe it was Ted Brewer who said that a comfortable RP is 1 second per meter of beam. So for example if your trawler has a beam of 16ft then a roll of about 5 seconds should be comfortable. It would be great if you could quantify what...

Trawler Stability - 2nd Opinion Wanted

"...it will require us to do a stability test (completed by anaval architect) anyway (per insurance), so we are moving on with that (we've worked out the kinks we had with this option) instead of using trawler knowledgeable captain for a 2nd opinion." 100% the best way-forward, @Aurelia-Lang...

    Twin Diesels versus single

Caballero II said: Please explain "fenced" our rudder? I have a GB 36 single screw. I would like more maneuverablity at slow speed. I believe that's referring to adding a fishtail to the rudder for increased maneuverability. I've seen the video and it's very impressive.

Burping air out of coolant system

Yeah, yeah, yeah. When I was in my 20's I was the smartest guy in the world and knew everything, certainly more than any old, yellowed manual. Oops, come to think about it, I did exactly what @GB32Seattle says not to do. Sh*t, maybe I wasn't so smart after all :)

    Displacement and single engine trawlers

@Pascall, Curious what the 1st and 2nd engines were, and what you're planning for this 3rd engine

    Milton

"There were a lot of lessons learned from hurricane Andrew in 1992, one of which was the importance of maintaining a structures envelope." Whaaat... do you mean there's a problem with stapling roof sheathing down? I returned to my uncle's farm the day after (with my 4x4 to get down the...

Do you need two sets of controls on a liveaboard?

OP, although there are no absolutes in life, I can absolutely say that if you are planning ocean crossings or long distance coastal, then a fully enclosed pilothouse is necessary, and a open flybridge is an option, a luxury. Not the other way around. It's about safety and comfort both, but...

Can someone explain the discrepancy of the reported strength versus what Windy reports? I’m seeing 50+ knit winds and 20ft seas. Neither sounds accurate.

    My confidence is being effected.

I like your idea about the rowboat. I’m a big believer in having two dinghies, even if one is just a paddle board (don’t ask!). I would still have a zodiac or RIB with a motor, but a 10ft rower would be wonderful.

    Interesting boats

A lot of potential with that big boy. Wonder about the main engine and engine room condition. Someone should reach out to the broker. PS - if you’re looking for a very cool conversion, then how about that tuna boat hull sitting next to it. That’s a hell of a crow’s nest!

48-volt house bank. Next Gen for boats?

@dannc this is a good thread to get one thinking about extended low speed putting around, which is generally not good for the mains. When I lived in Florida that was definitely the use case of my wife and I as well. Hours spent at 5 mph on canals and in channels. She hated the ICE. So...

    Nordic Tug Flybridge stability

"And do not assume the bridge is the preferred place to operate from in rough conditions." I would say that's a given. I wouldn't let my crew out on deck without a vest and a spotter in rough conditions. However, the definition of "rough conditions" is important and would depend on sea state...

    Elysium - 2003 Camano Troll

Glad you're enjoying, and very good to hear "The propane regulator was stuck and after my efforts to save it, started leaking out the second stage vent. The pressure gauge was falling apart, as was the mounting bracket. I tore the whole thing out." Propane systems freak me out, so, good that...

    My confidence is being effected.

Although I'm not prone to anxiety, there were systems on one previous boat of mine (an old one) which caused me loss of confidence, even though the boat trudged along for thousands of miles: - electric wall mounted heaters, old wiring, caused a fire one day (thank God for Home Depot smoke...

FOR SALE: 1983 Mainship 34' MKlll - $32,000 - Palm Beach County, Fl

Is this the same boat that was kept in Indiantown several years ago? Very nice boat and it seems like a very good value.

    Fantasy islands

"I have seen a guy with a beautifully varnished panga in San Quintin rowing from San Diego to Cabo, 2 other guys taking their 14ft Hobie Cat from Long Beach to Costa Rica, beaching it at night and camping on the beach." Wow, now there's some real adventurous people!

Composite thru hulls: good or bad idea ?

The time I saw simple brass through-hull fittings was on a very simple, cheap day cruiser. I would think that any legitimate builder would know not to use them. Do you know if RCD CE allows brass? I was wondering how composite thru-hulls do in freezing temps, ice in the water, if they become...

    Fantasy islands

@Marco Flamingo that's a fantastic idea, and I appreciate the challenges you listed. Since your plan was for a small dory then perhaps a compromise would be just to fly there and buy a local boat. Sell it cheap when done and perhaps leave it with a used boat dealer. Can rent a small SUV but...

    Fantasy islands

Interesting thread, although nearly 2 years old. If it were 50+ years ago then I would say the Galapagos Islands. Today however, I'd say the Antarctic peninsula. Turned down a job at McMurdo unfortunately, but planning to take my next boat there in retirement.

    Interesting boats

I would almost 100% agree with you @balder8, except I would say “Teak decks, great mistake…” No more for me, that’s for sure, but perhaps my experience was worse than most because they were teak planks over steel frames. No sub-deck.
