    Glen-L Marine "Hercules" custom trawler/tug

Hi everyone, we removed the Perkins 4-154 engine today from the boat and have pictures of this doing at Marlenes blog: Marlene and Benno's Odysseys on Land and Water It was not an easy task but it worked without a hick up. Regards,Benno

    Glen-L Marine "Hercules" custom trawler/tug

Hi Vinz, we had a Volvo Penta 3cyl diesel in our sailboat, good motor but parts were costly. We got our motor out today and it is sitting on the aft deck now. Will have it lifted off on Saturday and then Marlene will update her blog with pictures. Regards, Benno

    Glen-L Marine "Hercules" custom trawler/tug

Hi Rich, according to the previous owner the Perkins runs fine and has no issue. I like to update the otherwise fine boat to a newer and less horsepower Diesel. I will personalize the rest of the boat as well including a new galley etc. and so. Regards, Benno

    Glen-L Marine "Hercules" custom trawler/tug

I have not mastered yet to show pictures on this forum, but I will soon be able to do this. To keep you updated on our Glen-L Jolly Roger doings, perhaps you go to this link of Marlenes travel blog: Marlene and Benno's Odysseys on Land and Water At this moment I am in the process of removing the...

Experience of a good water maker Edwin, let me tell you I went through the same thinking process you have while outfitting our DD41. The problem a 12VDC or 24VDC water maker has is they are extremely expensive to purchase and they have very little output per hour. Filters, parts and supplies are...

    Glen-L Marine "Hercules" custom trawler/tug

Here is an update on our Jolly Roger, it is not a 33 ft model, after having the Jolly Roger hauled by a commercial Boat Hauler from near Kitchener, Ont. to our house in Leamington, Ont. some 300 KM and parked there, we came to the conclusion and after measuring the Jolly Roger, it is really 30...

@Mako, you are correct as the saying "Every Road leads to Rome" the use to say. The temperature in the engine room is not friendly for the location of battery banks. The engine starter bank can be placed very low and close to the aluminum plating where hull meets the keel to to be able to...

As it goes for battery banks, the propulsion diesel should have it own "starter" battery which it can chair it with the diesel generator as well. The bow thruster in case it is not hydraulic driven needs a "starter" battery too for the required power burst to be effective. The rest of power user...

I would keep my alternator, it will produce all the power you need while running from the A to B destination. A smart regulator is as well a must. In case you plan high latitude cruising keep in your mind that low pressure systems come in like freight trains, almost every 3 days, which means...

    Glen-L Marine "Hercules" custom trawler/tug

Hi everyone, here is another one of the Glen-L Jolly Roger 33 owners. Just bought it last week and it will be here next week on the lawn next to our house. Over the years we owned a few boats. Here is the list: sailboat Bayfield 29, sailboat Goderich 37, center console Chris Craft Sea Hawk 19...

Hippocampus you are correct, watching the exhaust temperature on a pyrometer is important in setting a CPP system. You are right Edwin, a boat can do easy without a CCP system, the cost was triple of the standard shaft and the propellor as I recall it. You are going to have a gorgeous yacht the...

Matching prop pitch to engine rpm (gearbox rpm) to gain a economically boat speed is truly easy when having a CPP Propellor System and the right engine horse power. I would say 5 hp per long ton and a CPP Propellor System like the one from West Mekan, Norway. A CPP is not overly expensive and...

Good-looking boat and the drawing of your u-shape galley look great. It is a functioning set up for your gourmet cook. I am sure Veronika will be happy. We had a similar set up in our DD. You mentioned the space under the sink, were you are planning of adding a UV light in the cold-water circuit...

Here is more on the anchor and chain topic. We had a 40kg original Bugel anchor from Germany on 250 ft. 3/8 HT chain on our Diesel Duck 41 (16 long tons). The Bugel anchor is the father of all roll bar anchors. We actually met Peter Smith of Rocna in Ushuaia, Argentina on the Beagle Channel just...

    saw a Diesel Duck yesterday

I just noticed this thread because I am new to this forum. Diesel Ducks are fantastic seaworthy boats and metal is the best building material for boats, which do high latitude sailing. Alaska or Patagonia etc. You can have uncharted rocks, heavy logs or even ice in the waters where you are...

I am an old salt. Just the other day my wife Marlene and I, Benno, became owners of a Jolly Roger 33 pocket trawler with the name “Albatross.” Some years ago, to be exact, it was 2013, we sold our aluminum 41 Diesel Duck trawler with the name “Diesel Duck.” It was our home for 8 years and let...
