Smells like diesel in my coolant. Is that possible?

Interesting possibilities, I look forward to hearing what ends up being the culprit

Smells like diesel in my coolant. Is that possible?

If it's diesel that has been through the combustion process to some degree then it can be finding it's way through the head gasket and into coolant. If it's virgin diesel then that seems less likely, unless the compression in that cylinder is so bad that it's not combusting, but it seems that...

Smells like diesel in my coolant. Is that possible?

To clarify, you stuck your finger into the fluid in the bilge, or inside the coolant system via the cap? If you remove your coolant cap and start the engine, do you see bubbles in there while it's running? Do you see unburnt red diesel or does it appear to have gone through combustion? I...

Hydraulic Autopilot turns wheel but not rudder

Thank you, I tested your theory yesterday by setting the autopilot, holding the upper helm and having a friend monitor the lower. Doing that, everything seemed to function properly and the lower helm stayed put. Looks like it's only my upper that is the problem, check valve kit ordered! Thanks...

Hydraulic Autopilot turns wheel but not rudder

Thank you! I take it each helm has two check valves and you had to replace all 4? Or is there a way to isolate which helm has the bad check valve?

Hydraulic Autopilot turns wheel but not rudder

When engaged, my autopilot will spin the wheel freely but there is no effect on the rudder. After a few revolutions it will begin to flash the code "Rudder Response Failure". Thoughts? My suspicion is some type of check valve in the pump, but I am not familiar enough with their operation to...

Ford Lehman 120 raw water in coolant system

Indeed, it seems that my water system was pressurized beyond the radiator cap, because it actually pushed water through it and out the overflow when at rest. Certainly a concerning possibility to keep in mind though.

Ford Lehman 120 raw water in coolant system

Resurrecting this thread to add an update. After having the heat exchanger repaired, I noticed down the line that I was still getting an overfilling coolant system. I chocked it up to a shoddy repair job and ordered/installed a new heat exchanger. I again thought the issue was behind me but...

    Rebuild Lehman 120

In your position, I'd consider a replacement rather than rebuild. If saltwater found it's way into the block and sat there long enough to seize the engine then it may be a real mess Check out this thread for thoughts on replacement...

Ford Lehman 120 raw water in coolant system

It's the same exchanger which has been repaired, per post #10 & #12.

Ford Lehman 120 raw water in coolant system

As an update to anyone that may have this issue in the future, after reinstalling the heat exchanger I stopped seeing raw water weeping out the overflow. So it seems that that was in fact the issue.

    Froli Sleep Systems?

I used the system for a time on my Hallberg-Rassy 33 V-Berth. It was comfortable, though I ultimately removed them because I didn't like needing to remove them to get into V-Berth storage. If that's not an issue, probably worth giving it a shot

You're welcome - no, for the engines I pulled oil samples following sea trial and sent them into Blackstone Laboratories for analysis. To arrive at a decision I used those findings in conjunction with my own knowledge of engines, their behavior during sea trial, reading through the...

    Ok to pressure wash fiberglass?

I have not had an issue pressure washing boats. Best practice would be to wax the surface afterwards to seal small pores, but not doing so isn't going to hurt anything, aside from no better resilience to getting dirty again.

Ford Lehman 120 raw water in coolant system

Yes that's correct, 2-3. You could block off quite a few before noticing any difference in the ability to maintain normal operating temperature. Considering how many tubes there are - excessive scaling, water temperature and operating RPM will all have a much more significant effect. I snapped...

Ford Lehman 120 raw water in coolant system

Thank you to all that have replied. I removed the heat exchanger and brought it into a local radiator shop that has experience dealing with them. They cleaned it, found a leak and sealed the offending areas/tube with putty. I'll reinstall and report back if I continue to experience the same...

Ford Lehman 120 raw water in coolant system

It's definitely water ingress as the leak continues at all times (before, during and after running the engine, all day every day). Additionally, the coolant is significantly more diluted than the 50/50 water/coolant mix. Not sure, I'll give it a look. Thanks for the tip.

Ford Lehman 120 raw water in coolant system

The trawler I recently purchased has dual Lehman 120's - one of them underwent a significant service in September 2019 which included replacing the heat exchanger for the engine, oil and trans. Now, it's apparent that raw water is entering into the coolant system on that engine. An engine oil...
