    Helmsman Mariner 35 Seville Express

“Express” cruisers are built for speed and therefore kept light weight. The Mariner express cruiser has a very different hull, and appears to be a planing hull. The current Helmsman's are semi-displacement and built like a tank. Not built for speed.

    Engine Zinc Durability

What zinc size does your transmission cooler take? The one included in boatzinc.com QSB kit does not fit mine. I’m not sure whether to go down a diameter size to 1/4 inch? Or order a metric size shown for ZF transmissions. I am guessing it needs 1 inch length but I’m guessing.

    Best open-top tool bag?????

I am experimenting with a different route this time. Multiple small bags rather than some monster to do it all. Craftsman 13 in. W X 9.75 in. H Wide Mouth Tool Bag 6 pocket Black/Red Mfr# CMST513100 - Ace Hardware Easier to stow into odd corners. Easier to lift. Cheap.

If it’s so easy to make the translation, then leave it alone and let the metric lovers translate.

Wireless Docking Remote Controls - What's The Magic Number?

I think I mentioned earlier I use a fob remote for my thrusters. I don’t have to have it, but like it. FYI to anyone considering that route. Yesterday the fob battery died as I was wrapping up dock line chores. I was basically done so no big deal. The point is the fob and battery were just...

    Boater’s evolution

Seems like the work to play ratio is at least part of the consideration to downsize. And as we age the work gets harder even if the chore list remains a constant. For some, a middle ground may exist. Become more of a checkbook boater. Pay someone to do a serious detailing job annually, and...

    Resilient Has Landed

My project this week was to add additional handrails port and starboard. Other owners had these and I thought it was a good idea. My wife is short, with short legs, and wanted a better grip coming aboard. I’m happy with how it works out. I also have additional rails to add to the forward side...

I told her I didn't want to buy a boat!

You know the old saying. Judgement comes from experience, but unfortunately good judgement comes from bad experience. Even if you spend years gaining experience before heading to the Bahamas, the first time you go you will be doing it with no experience in the Bahamas. In the end its about...

    Rear-View Mirrors

I second the backup camera suggestion. But will also say nothing beats just stepping out onto the deck outside of my pilothouse.

    Autopilot Oscillates

I have Simrad. Not familiar with Garmin. But on the theory of simple things first to rule them out: Should have a routine to calibrate the system. Involving heading into free water, pressing a button to start it, and let it take over to do a circle or whatever pattern it uses to calibrate...

    Grounding Video

I agree with your perspective about patience and the boat. Wondering if the lawyers saw something I didn’t. I do vaguely recall one episode where he left a marina in poor circumstances. Lost steering as I recall and planned to get to the next stop using his twin engines to steer. Guests...

Justices Side With Insurers in Rare Fight Over Yacht Policy I looked for a link to the back story but in a Quick Look didn’t find one. This case comes to mind. Owner ran aground with significant damage. No fire involved. Claim denied because his policy required regular maintenance of fire...

    Insurance and Salvage

It’s a worthy discussion about which we may never get a good answer. So, let me ask from another angle. What are the potential valid reasons why an insurance company can reject such a claim?

    2024 Helmsman 38 Sedan - Chesapeake Bay MD - $699,000

By the way Nick, I saw your boat in your marina last week. A seriously nice boat. For those that value side decks above the interior space a pilothouse model brings, I can’t think of a better boat currently produced in this size range. It basically has a market all its own. The 38e has...

    2024 Helmsman 38 Sedan - Chesapeake Bay MD - $699,000

As readers try to parse the various pros and cons of the sedan model vs pilot house model, this discussion about dingy size highlights a difference that may escape attention. On the sedan the flybridge seating and controls are set materially farther forward than on the pilot house. Therefore a...

Do new boat builders get off too easy?

You think boats have issues? Peruse YouTube on how NO RV made recently has even marginal quality. To the degree year old models are being scrapped as worthless. Costing hundreds of thousands when new a year ago. Busted frames etc. No dealer or manufacturer support.

Do new boat builders get off too easy?

As a 2023 buyer of a new boat I feel compelled to respond. There is an awful lot to unpack in the overall observation and opinion. Let’s begin with: you are correct. Buyers have a reasonable right to expect reasonable quality relative to the quality goals of the make. Let’s also face it...

    Helmsman 38E Build Hull 61

Hit it with polish on a microfiber, then wax. Colonite and others make a stainless polish for the job but in a pinch gelcoat polish will do.
