Will You Go Broke On A Boat? - 1999 Viking 60 SportYatch

My 2 cents - My wife and I both work and we make a decent living. I wanted a boat so bad I could taste it so I jumped from a 22 foot bowrider to a 2004 35 foot boat that has gone from FL to Cape Cod and next year we are looking at a 3,300 mile trip called the Downeast Loop. In the almost 3...

Sitting in the mud for a hurricane?

Seems you have made up your mind - so why ask? Is there anything that would change your mind? It does not sound like it - let us know how you fair.

Sitting in the mud for a hurricane?

My two cents - if you sit in mud so are your raw water intakes and any other thru hull valve. I would not do that - my previous owner has sucked up enough mud and sand to know that is not good in your hoses and intakes. Good Luck either way.

How often to start the engines?

According to the marine diesel industry, most engine problems begin in the fuel tank. This is because water intrusion is more present on the seas than it is on land. Still, according to BP, “Under normal storage conditions, diesel fuel can be expected to stay in a usable condition for 12 months...

    Conception captain gets sentenced

Boy I don't know - very easy to criticize now. I would like to know how the Coast Guard gets a free pass on this ride. I am a diver and sure I am a bit miffed - but I am also a volunteer fireman and I make sure I know which way is out - in a hotel, in a building with more than 100 people, in...

    John Deere aftercooler

If you buy new that is correct Cummins does not lub them prior to shipment. You or someone needs to lubricate them before you put them in your boat - I have a QSC 8.3 and I removed my aftercoolers and found out it was shot. I got someone to replace it for me because I did not understand or...

Rejecting a vessel prior to survey

I used the Seller's broker - I would never do that again. One more thing I used a Surveyor that I wish had stayed home - I would have found more issues than he did. But because he showed up I thought I was covered... big mistake that will never happen to me or anyone that listens to me...

    Safe Harbor...what's the deal.

For sure you need to be renting a slip and I would imagine like it is at my marina they want the full year even if the season is April 1st to Nov 30 or so. If you winter with them they give you a discount on the fuel - so that could be the additional cost. When they first took over our slip...

    Safe Harbor...what's the deal.

Not sure where you where but I spent 6 nights at Islamorada for free. Tweaked my prop on a Fri and was stuck for 6 days - Floridians do not work on weekends - Fri through Weds night. Free up and down the east coast. My best stay was out in Montauk this past year - beautiful marina. This...

Over propped. Is it really a problem?

Only gonna say this - Everyone I talk to says do not run your generator without a load. You must have a load or you shorten the life of the generator. So there is something to finding a balance. Not heavy and not light... A diesel wants to run but needs a load...

Over propped. Is it really a problem?

So it is possible there are big differences between the one article which discusses Displacement and Semi-Displacement vs Planing hulls. I was going discuss why the article was off base based on my experience. I too resized and reprop'ed my boat but I am a planning hull - I used the above...

    Avoiding log strikes

We had heavy rains up in Connecticut and Rhode Island and lots of trees were downed and got washed into Long Island Sound. I was in about 100 feet of water taking it slow and noticed 2 seagulls standing on the water (not floating). My brain kicked in because it could not process what was...

    Cruising realities

My bow line is generally the first one secured - especially in my slip. Otherwise if I am on the T dock it could be the mid cleat but never stern first on my boat. Leaving the stern free allows me to move or position the boat much more freely - I am a single prop.

    Engine anode

Can I just say I believe you are over analyzing this... The anode will sink it should not interfere with the aftercooler - put in a new one and let it go. This works for me. I dont mean to question your concern - I know lots of people that worry about all kinds of stuff that does not seem to...

American Tug 34 vs Downeast Cruiser

Take this for what it is worth - a tug is a nice boat, it cruises at about 8 knots. So a 10 hour cruise gives you about 80 miles depending on weather and current. I took my 35 downeast to Florida from NJ and back over the winter last year and then made a trip to Cape Cod summer. My...

We took our boat down from Manasquan River NJ to West Palm Beach in October 2022 - we did it in 12 days with 2 days in Charleston SC and 2 days in Brunswick GA to visit family. We brought the boat home in May 2023 and it took 9 days but we were on a mission to get home and hit 3 days of weather...

    Long Island's Southern Passage

So I have gone on the outside of Long Island when the weather was good. And I have gone all the way down Long Island Sound into NY City and then out to Sandy Hook when the weather was poor. Either way I have a 3.5 foot draft and had zero troubles on either route. Messing with shoaling and...

    Overnights in Long Island Sound

When I plan a trip - I use Google Maps and Navionics to find fuel and marinas. My range is 200 or so miles. Google maps will give you an idea of where to look and you can use the measure feature to show you which areas to look for Marinas. Drill down and you can find the marinas. Google...

    Anchor Trip Line Technique

Ok so last thought - I use this method on a Reef Anchor - I do a lot of diving... I use a shackle on the crown and run the chain up the shank to the ring. Then I put 2 medium size zip ties between the chain and the ring. If it gets stuck I use the boat to yank the chain - snap the ties and...
