    3208TA Coolant question

Please don't judge...the CAT manual says "fill to .5" of the bottom of the filler pipe.". My coolant tank has a "collar" like most do when you take the cap off and when you stick your finger in (my method for checking), there is a pipe from the top down to nearly a third of the tank. (slightly...

    3208 Sherwood Raw Water Pump

I agree especially for what they charge. There’s no reason I can’t do it myself and will. What’s happened is that the mechanic sends his helpers for service jobs now VS repairs and they are late teens or in their early twenties with not enough experience or knowledge to do the job. In this...

    3208 Sherwood Raw Water Pump

The “mechanic” had run both motors to test everything out. I saw him on the cameras in the salon start the motors and stand at the hatches and look down. He did not get back down into the engine room as he should have. The next day I get onto the boat to check every out and there is five gallons...

    3208 Sherwood Raw Water Pump

Sorry, could not get the photo to load, bath there are three bolts to hold the cover plate over the impeller and one empty threaded hole at the pipe portion of the casing. Seems like it should be plugged.

    3208 Sherwood Raw Water Pump

Can anyone confirm that the raw water pump needs this threaded hole plugged? I just had impellers replaced and during inspection of the pumps, found this hole open on both engines. I honestly can’t remember if they were like this before!? This is on a CAT 3208TA. My guess is the mechanic left...

    CAT 3208 impeller questions

I'd say a LOT of the timing has to do with the channels that you travel. I took a long trip up the Ohio River last summer (highly recommend) on new impellers, but nearly every marina had very tight water and my own marina on the Cumberland was also kicking up milk shakes. So, after those 225...

    Dinghy Motor

Like some of the others, I have never run out of battery and had to paddle back as the little "dash" on the motor tells me how much time I have left and changes depending on how much throttle I use. I pull the battery before I take the motor off the dinghy. It's just less cumbersome and it has a...

    Dinghy Motor

We have been using our E-propulsion Spirit on a 9'6" AB Hypalon dinghy and we love it. I weigh about 185 and my wife...who knows, but let's just say the dinghy makes her look thin. It won't plane but we love using the E-prop. So quiet it reminds of more of kayaking. I seldom have range anxiety...

    Depreciation rate for boat upgrades

For me, if I am looking for a particular style of boat say CPMY, if I find a brand that is on my list and it says REPOWERED, I jump right into the details. If it has under 1000 hours ('m usually looking at 30 year old boats) it makes the head of the short list and I am willing to pay more for...

    Generator comparisons

Westerbeke We have a 14KW Westerbeke with about 1200 hours on it. Living in the South we use it in the hook in the summer to keep the AC cold and the fridge colder. I basically keep the belt in good shape, fresh impellers, oil and clean fuel. I like everything about it except the sound box. Too...

    2021 Cruising Plans

IN late June we will leave Nashville, TN and head down the Cumberland to the top of Lake Barkley, stay at Half Moon Bay for a few days, then head up the Ohio River to Galconda, Illinois, Evansville, Indiana Owensboro, KY Louisville for about a week (family there), Cincinnati, Maysville...

    Is Anyone Cruising Right Now?

We take short cruises nearly every week. Over the summer we went up to the origin (or the end of navigable waters) of the Cumberland River to Celina, TN. It was a beautiful trip of 492 miles round trip for us with only a couple of locks. Saw lots of wildlife, stayed on the hook in some deserted...

    Trawler or MotorYacht

I've had people call my boat a trawler. I just don't see it. I think of Grand Banks, Albin, Willard, Defever, a mast, full displacement (sometimes?), ballasted hull, keel/prop protection, typically one motor, a nice old brass lantern in the salon, a sadly bearded captain, lots of teak...but then...

    Galley up, or down?

Galley down We love our galley down two steps. Many times people are watching a movie in the salon and do not want to hear pots and pans and prep, plus it creates another space for a separate group to get together. This week we had three other couples on a cruise. The men were watching football...

Glad to find this great forum. We are long time boaters, fairly new cruisers although my parents were cruisers on the Ohio River growing up in the 60’s snd 70’s. We plan to do the loop two years from now when our youngest graduates from high school (we have three older daughters from 31 down)...
