New Fleming 85 hull, designed by Norman Wright, Queensland

We adore the Flemings. We are based in Sidney, BC Canada, where Flemings are based. There are always a dozen or so of various sizes at our marina, and they are truly spectacular. Short of winning a BIG lottery however, Fleming ownership will always elude us...

    TAMD41B sudden power loss

Well, I was in a fix (60 miles from home, serious need to get home, and a major wind storm to transit through), so I decided to take the chance that the primary filter was the issue. I managed to find the right filter (10 micron for the Racor), so I bought two. I installed the filter (the old...

    TAMD41B sudden power loss

Wow, that’s quite a setup!! Very tidy! I really like the parallel filter idea. Even as an emergency measure I could plumb in a manual bypass for the Racor, so the 2 micron spin-on could pick up the load temporarily. I do carry a spare spin-on aboard.

    TAMD41B sudden power loss

I see there’s a specific kit for newer Racor 500’s (replaces the T-handle on the top - couldn’t be easier thuan that, right?). Unfortunately it doesn’t fit older units like mine, but I’ll keep looking… Wow, getting a LOT of help from you wonderful folks here!!!

Ahhh, okay. Never seen one of those - should be a fairly generic part, I would think…

    TAMD41B sudden power loss

On checking Google, I see there is an “engine vacuum valve ki” for my engine - not sure if that’s what is required, but I’ll look into it further….

    TAMD41B sudden power loss

I forgot to reply about the vacuum gauge issue - nope, don’t have one, and I’m not sure it’s possible with the TAMD41B - there’s no intake manifold to speak of to tap into - the air cleaner housing is mounted directly to the turbo. Maybe through the lid of the air cleaner, but I’m not sure if...

    TAMD41B sudden power loss

When I bought the boat 23 years ago it had the original spin-on Volvo Penta filter, and the Racor had been fitted as an extra for redundancy. I had never thought of adding a 3rd filter, though your idea sounds great, and it’s an option I need to investigate. Not a lot of room in that area of...

    TAMD41B sudden power loss

Of course, at only 2 microns as the primary filter, it’s maybe not surprising if it clogged quickly….?

    TAMD41B sudden power loss

I’ve seen that in the posts - the filter element listed for this Racor 500MA is Racor part number 2010SM (replacement part number is printed right on the filter housing), which is sold on Amazon as a 2 micron filter. I would have thought it would be coarser than that - not much point in having...

    TAMD41B sudden power loss

I’m desperately hoping this will be the source of my power loss! I guess the Racor would be first in line for replacement & I’ve ordered one. My favourite marine diesel mechanic has told me not to worry about the spin-on filter as the 2 micron Racor will remove everything before it gets to the...

Jeff F - Nope - no smoke at all, of any color

    TAMD41B sudden power loss

I wish I knew! I have a 500 series Racor 2 micron filter ahead of the engine mounted spin on filter. No visible water or anything in the Racor, although there are some particles on the shelf below the filter element (bits filtered & dropped from the element, maybe?). I’ve ordered a new...

    TAMD41B sudden power loss

We have a 1991 Cooper Yachts 28’ Prowler with a Volvo Penta TAMD41B mated to a VP 290DP leg. About 875 hours on it since new. Boat’s been running beautifully - up to 28.2 knots an a smooth 23.5 cruise at 3750 RPM. Gets out of the hole and up on a plane quickly as soon as the turbo spools up...

    Amp hour shunt melted

VERY true! I had a major problem with my starting battery/starter. Not enough juice going through most of the time to even crank it. Everything looked perfect, though. Replaced the starter and, initially, it cranked over & fired up right away. 2nd try, almost no cranking. Used another...

Quality of Cooper Prowler 42 with DD 8.2 engines?

Re: Cooper Yachts in general - I've owned a smaller Prowler (28') for 21 years now. The quality of the boat, hull, furniture, etc. is outstanding. The hull is massively thick (which I confirmed a few months ago when installing a through-hull) and solid. The boat handles far better than any...

What does S/D at 8kts look like?

My little boat is kept at the marina that is also the home of Fleming Yachts Sales & Service on this coast of Canada. The first one I saw (a 65') captured my boat-love forever. They are spectacularly beautiful, inside and out. Truly my "dream boat". Now, all I need is a spare $4 million or...

    Raymarine C90-W Chartplotter - Reviews?

The boat is a '91 Cooper Yachts Prowler 28', with a small command bridge. Due to the dash design, the C90W has to be mounted vertically, with a bracket, rather than installed into a vertical dash face. This I have already done (very easy, and the screen faces me directly, which is great for...

    Raymarine C90-W Chartplotter - Reviews?

Well, as I said, I'm in Canada so....the cheapest Garmin starts at $1,500 and they go up to $4,000 here! Crazy prices, 3-4X what they are in the US. That's the way it is with most things here - I was looking at something on Amazon.com for $80. On Amazon.ca the identical item, from Amazon...

    Raymarine C90-W Chartplotter - Reviews?

Well, that's disappointing. Did they simply never work at all? I'm surprised - I always thought Raymarine was pretty decent equipment. Here in Canada, there's no such thing as a "cheap" chartplotter, unless one considers $1500-$3500 cheap. In our case, we're on a shoestring budget and this...

    Raymarine C90-W Chartplotter - Reviews?

I just picked up a Raymarine C90-W chartplotter for my boat (no room for anything larger on my command bridge dash), and I'm wondering about the experiences of others with this instrument. I fired it up at my shop, outdoors, in full sun, and was surprised how bright & visible the screen was...

small boat - inboard vs I/O vs outboard

I have an I/O setup as well - a Volvo Penta TAMD-41B turbo with a 290DP drive. It's been in salt water for 30 years now, 24/7. I go through a LOT of zincs (now, $300 per year worth, due to the astronomical cost of zinc, and the fact that my marina runs all their high-tension electrical cables...

Lets talk about being STUPID again

I have a Cooper Yachts Prowler 28' with a Volvo Penta TAMD-41B turbo diesel & 290DP leg. I had just done a bunch of work on her, put her back in the water, and went out for a short test run. She ran great!! Except that when I got the revs up a bit, the temp shot up, steam out of the engine...

    Vaccination passports

What I find hilarious is people saying that Invermectin and Hydroxychloroquin are “European snake oil” (even though they were tested, found safe, and approved by the FDA, years or even decades ago), yet these brand new vaccines are completely safe...even though they’ve never been tested, shown...

    Vaccination passports

Some scary stuff going on...in some Canadian provinces, people are being told they soon won’t be permitted to even get food at grocery stores, go to work, or venture out unless they hold a vaccine passport...
