Anyone on here with a Viking?

Not a motor yacht but we’ve got a 58 Enclosed Bridge sportfish. It’s a 1999 model but solidly built and still going strong. Viking service and support is excellent, they still carry a variety of parts for our boat.

Removing AC power and going with DC power only.

A couple of thoughts, as I'm considering some major changes to the electrical system on my boat this coming winter. 1. Many handy appliances only run on AC e.g. toasters, kettle etc. What would be the plan for those? 2. Assuming you have a roughly equivalent power demand, DC will draw much...

    No-GPS Chart Plotter

Yep, mine is fully networked. Select goto a mark or activate a route in TZ, it automatically sends the nav data to the NMEA2000 network. Push Nav button on the AP, confirm data source and off we go!

    No-GPS Chart Plotter

Here is a short video I made today showing how to manually plot your position in TimeZero using triangulation of landmark bearings. Sorry there is no sound, so I'll describe what is happening: This is a screen capture of TimeZero from my boat in the marina this afternoon. TimeZero is...

    No-GPS Chart Plotter

The OP said he uses Timezero and OpenCPN. I can’t comment on OpenCPN as I’ve never used it, but Timezero will do exactly what the OP wants to do. So in that respect it’s free for him. I’d like lots of stuff for free but it ain’t happening. If he wanted true failsafe backup then he should buy...

Going slow in a fast trawler

My “trawler” has a theoretical hull speed of just under 10 knots. I’ve got two 1350hp V12 diesels. At just under 9 knots I’m burning 40lph (10gph) giving me 0.85nmpg. If I bump up to ten knots my total consumption nearly doubles, dropping my efficiency to 0.5nmpg. Or course if I’m in a hurry...

    Life expectancy?

Many engine manufacturers are moving away from hour based major overhauls and are moving toward total fuel burn. It’s a better indicator of life and can account for a wide variety of operating history eg many hours at low rpm/load to fewer hours at high rpm/load. If you can make a good...

    No-GPS Chart Plotter

Well you are starting to get the idea of the difference between a chart plotter/MFD and dedicated navigation software on a PC. With something like Timezero, you don’t need the MFD. Everything is already there on the software; nav data is provided to the software from you existing sensors. And...

    No-GPS Chart Plotter

You can do this very easily with Timezero. It even has a “Planning” mode where it does not expect to see a GPS location, although you could also use “Navigation” mode where it is looking for a location. There’s a dedicated tool right on the main chart plotter screen called, funnily enough...

    No-GPS Chart Plotter

Furuno sat compasses all use multiple GNSS systems - GPS, GLONASS, and I think there are one or two others.

    No-GPS Chart Plotter

Timezero does, it has a divider function that replicates exactly what would you would do with a pencil, parallel ruler and handheld compass.

    No-GPS Chart Plotter

Timezero has a pretty useful divider function that lets you do manual plotting on the electronic chart. I primarily use it to set up drifts for bottom fishing but it could easily be used in conjunction with a magnetic compass to take bearings, plot positions etc. It allows you to start the...

    Why TimeZero nav software ?

I’ve run Timezero for the last six years on two boats. At a basic level it works just like an MFD - you can show charts, navigation, radar etc. However it does a bunch of things that are more advanced than any regular MFD. PBG (personal bathymetry generator) interfaces with the sounder to...

    Poll: Anchor vs. Marinas

I answered less than 30% anchoring before I realised that includes moorings. In that respect more than 90% of our time is at anchor or on a mooring. We love the more quiet places if you are prepared to anchor or use a mooring. Having said that we just did our first trip just staying in...

Longest nonstop passage on a powerboat?

What type of boat was that trip done in? We are thinking in a few years to take our 58’ from the east coast to Vanuatu.

    Diesel Additives

Here’s my main issue with the claims made by fuel additive makers, in particular the claims about performance and engine life enhancement: There is no credible data anywhere to support either their claims of the problems that modern diesel fuels cause or their claims that their products rectify...

    Diesel Additives

Countless hours on marine diesels on commercial boats and recreational boats that use commercial fuel suppliers would suggest otherwise.

    Furuno Major TZtouch2 Software Update

On the TZT series that setting is customisable in the menus. Red depth markings can be set at a range of threshold depths starting at 0 in about 1 metre increments.

Where are you based? We were scheduled to take the boat to the Abrolhos at Easter but had to postpone that. Now getting her ready for the trip to Exmouth in February.

    Greetings from Western Australia

We actually looked at some trawler style boats which were very appealing but we also fish a lot (game fishing). As a fishing boat it doesn’t make a bad cruising boat. At nine knots I’m doing about 38lph; I’ve got 6000 litres so I can do 1200nm with 10% reserve. If I drop down to 7 knots I’m...
