    Insurance on a 40yo trawler?

I would read your policy very carefully. Lloyds at least in home owners insurance is a last resort insurer. I hate handling their claims. Very slow and don't like to pay. Maybe the marine division is different but I would be very careful. My $ .02 as a claims adjuster.

    Poll: Insurance

I think for the Keys, 3 or 4 percent would be fair. 15% is beyond ridiculous. Geico had an "Actual Cash Value" policy that they would sell me for $2,600. I had them send me a sample policy so I could read how the depreciation would be calculated in the event of a claim. They depreciate 10% per...

    Poll: Insurance

We have liability only. Our boat is valued at $40K. We live in the Keys. Boat US wanted $6,200 per year for full coverage or $200 a year for $300K liability only. That's right it is not a misprint. $6K a year to cover my $40K boat. We decided to self insure. In six and a half years we would have...

    Chine Slap noise ST42

For those of you that say you will get used to it, well maybe not. Not all boats are the same. We have a Wellcraft 2900 Express and a SeaRay 380 Aft Cabin. Both have chine slap but the noise is totally different. The Wellcraft sounds like there are at least five kids with ball peen hammers on...

Hey if boating is a sport does that make me an athlete?

    Breakers

I guess you are talking about small gauge wiring because using aluminum wire in residential and commercial applications is still the norm on larger size wires (above AWG10). Almost all wire ran by utility companies is aluminum.

    M/V or M/Y

It depends on who you are talking to. If you have just met a lovely young lady you explain that you own a yacht. If you are meeting with the tax auditor it is just an old boat.

I wouldn't miss the haul for anything. If something happens I want to see it happen.

An old sailor once told me the difference between a boat and a yacht is the yacht can make ice.

    Free Quicksilver 8KW Generator

Hmmm. South Korea and South Florida, can't be that far apart. They are both in the south.

    Free Quicksilver 8KW Generator

The problem is that the heat exchanger is part of the exhaust manifold, they are one unit. Otherwise I would do just what you said and get a generic heat exchanger. Bad design. It is a shame to see Dockside sitting there not being used. It is missed.

    Unasked Liveaboard Questions

We have lived aboard for 6 years now. First 1 1/2 years on a 25' sailboat, 4 years on a 36' trawler, the last few months on a 29' power boat. We just bought a 38' power boat with 2 SRs and 2 heads. We have found a few things to be of more importance than the length over all. Our short list of...

    Free Quicksilver 8KW Generator

Anyone in Florida interested in a free generator (if they help me get it out of and off the boat). It is a 1988 Quicksilver 8 KW gas genny with a Nissan motor. 1200 hours on it. It starts and runs good and makes electricity. The problem is the ends of the heat exchanger and the exhaust elbow...

    New Boat

That is what I will have to try. We have a Wellcraft 2900 Express Cruiser and I do that with it but it is difficult as the side decks are narrow. It may be easier with this one.

    New Boat

Thanks kartracer. No I was talking about the remotes that control transmissions so I could walk forward to pick up the mooring and still have control of the boat. But that is way out of my price range right now. Current problem of the day is I had a good look at the Quicksilver generator today...

    New Boat

Thanks everyone. The big thing to me with the prop pockets is the minimal draft. The Keys are very shallow. Going from a 4' draft to 2' 7" will be very nice. Now if I can figure out how to get from the helm to the bow to pick up a mooring solo I will have it made. Wish I could afford remote...

    New Boat

Well, new to us. We just purchased a 1989 Sea Ray 380 Aft Cabin. A far different vessel than the 36' Marine Trader that we had before. This has twin 454 gas engines, good thing our travels are pretty much just going to be the Keys for the foreseeable future. 1 mpg at 7 knots, .5 mpg at 12 knots...

    A New Chandlery?

    A New Chandlery?

So true. I wish the general public could understand this but some how they just cannot grip it. Most look for the cheapest price no matter what. They think only of today. My father worked a union job most of his life. I was discussing the Oreo cookie thing with him the other day and told him I...

    A New Chandlery?

Back when WM would price match online advertised prices I would shop online first and then go to WM and buy it. I did that for two reasons. 1. I like their customer service and return policy. 2. I want to see brick and mortar stores hang around. Since they quit price matching I now buy most...

    Smaller Trawler names?

LOL We started out living and traveling on a 25' sailboat, sold that and bought a 36' trawler. Lived and traveled on that for 4 years. Sold that and have bought a Wellcraft 2900 Express Cruiser. Hope we like it.

    Silly project

On a $30K budget I would go sail. A good turn key 36' sail boat can be had very easily, a trawler not so easy. A 36' sailboat under power will get you where ever you are going about as fast as a trawler and with less fuel. Lots of sailboats motor and never raise a sail. If physical limitations...
