    Boats you would buy again.

Snarks I had 3 Snarks that gave me lots of fond Memories. It was fun- I was young and pushed it to its very low limits. I had the narrow yellow (banana shaped) "Super Snark" model and then their "high end" sloop "? snark." it had a stayed mast still with the hull foam filled black ABS...

    Cat 3208

Yes that is correct. In the 1980's I ran a maintenance shop with 12 cat 3028 powered trucks. We called the 3208's "throwaway engines" always bought new or full factory rebuilt's to replace a major engine problem...

    Shortage of distilled water

REVERSE OSMOSIS DRINKING WATER WITHOUT OUT ADDED SALTS WOULD BE VERY CLOSE TO DISTILLED. SOME Reverse Osmosis drinking water advertises added minerals, etc. and some does not...

    Aft Anchor type and size?

Yes- my second to search "Panope" and "anchor tests" to find info -- a fellow sailor has become quite the anchor guru. He tests with live video go-pro watching the anchors set and reset. He also has put together some great charts of his results.

    Diesel Air Filters

I am always amazed when the conventional wisdom "marine environment has no or little dust." Try this; 1. anchor somewhere. 2. clean an area on your deck. 3 wait a day. 4. reclean the same spot with a white rag. Bet you find some noticeable dirt/dust on your rag.

    Propeller question

Art, Again thank you. The present owner had replaced many of the stanchion bases with new ones (bought from the OEM source) and there enough new stanchion bases to redo the entire boat. He mentioned not being able to get access to all the stanchion base bolts underside. Not sure what I will...

    Propeller question

Thank you very much. I am sure some other Tolley 34 Tri's owners besides myself will benefit from your thorough respone. BTW, I am under contract to buy this boat and will have my sea trial next week. My perfomance data came from the seller.

    Negotiate or Not

Seems to me that the dripping shaft seals, the vibration, the bad motor mounts, and worn cutlass bearings are all a related problem! Bad motor mounts could well have caused the other three problems. As far as the deck problem goes-- those kinds of problems will ALWAYS TURN OUT TO BE LARGER...

    Propeller question

Art, You said- "Our 34’ classic 1977 Tollycraft tri cabin has good condition twin 255 hp gas engines, 1.5 reduction, and straight shaft... it twists well balanced and clean 17 x 16 three blade props (I call them my “little cutters”). As a clean bottom, hard chine planing hull with 33” draft, 11...

Strange fiber cord throughout the boat

If run thru passages and in hard to reach areas, then I would guess that it is for "pulling" new wires.

Filling the chambers does not add any stability at all unless the chambers leak.

    Flotation collar for dinghy

I owned a Walker Bay 8' plastic dinghy with the smaller yellow collar (sold with the new dinghy originally in about 2008). It was a "RIB-Lite." The collar was smaller than the current Walker Bay RIB collar - the yellow collar was about 6" diameter. I found it to be a very good...

    transom door

I suspect cutting the door centered on the transom will do the least structural damage as a first guess. Looking at the rear shape, the transom will have significantly more vertical dimension in the center of most any monohull. Thus cutting down to the cockpit sole where the total transom...

Does a trawler have weather and motion issues like a sailboat?

Outdoor vs indoor I am looking to switch from 40 years of sail boating to a trawler. I have over 20000 cruising miles in my sailing log. Why the change? A. Comfort and B. Arthritis . To explain in detail: A. I am not aware of any sailboats on which you can adjust the sails from inside a...
