    Bottom paint condition, pre-purchase

We once did a hard dry machine sand of my then IG36, post osmosis repair. A disgusting horrible job. But we ended up with a lovely smooth bottom, until.... Eventually the a/f will lose enough adhesion you need to take it right back, soda stripping seems preferred. Until then, you can do a lot...

Li Installation Contractor Hold Harmless and Insurance Approval

The "hold harmless"/release is likely dictated by the contractor`s liability insurer.

    Charcoal, gas, or electric grill?

On our previous boat, a Magma circular gas/LPG bbq with cover produced a remarkably good char,as good as the solid fuel /briquette version Magma before it. Current boat is all electric incl the bbq, get it very hot before the steaks go on gives good caramelization. I`d replace it with a gas...

Li Installation Contractor Hold Harmless and Insurance Approval

Check your policy to see if granting a release to anyone, not just an electrician installing LI batts, affects your right to claim on insurance for any loss you suffer due to the work of the contractor requiring release from liability. Insurers don`t like you doing it, their subrogated rights are...

    Gas Lift Struts

Job done, reporting back. I suspect all 3 replaced lifters were OEM. We kind of cheated with the interior ER hatch, the new strut was the same shaft size and it fitted the existing "ball" bolts which, spending life in the dry bilge ER, looked in good condition. I`d upsized the 2 exterior struts...

    Complexity vs mission-worthiness and reliability

In terms of functional specificity(thanks to K Rudd, ex PM now Australian Ambassador( and pontificating lecturer to US Govt and anyone else nearby), I doubt it really matters to buyers whether the engine is electronically controlled or not. But it might tip the scales for someone.

Sleipner/Side Power Thruster Failures in new units

James E, the idea that a thruster runs optimally on a flat to semi flat battery output defies the improvement I saw renewing the dedicated bowthruster battery. Please let us know how the "legal advice" goes. As a retired one, slowly, I expect.

    Interesting boats

Halvorsen Viking 32 For Sale. Stunning painstaking restoration would have cost $$$, no wonder it`s "expression of Interest" priced. Broker is a timber Halvorsen specialist shipwright who does a little brokering as well...

    Monk 36 Fuel Tank Replacement

Don`t dismiss the boat without investigation. Assess the rust. The top of the tank may be decayed to the point of leaking, or it could be surface rust which may be treated by POR or similar. Check the condition of the filler tube and its attachments to deck and tank for rust damage. Chances are...

    Sapele

For timber similar in appearance to teak, I immediately thought of meranti. The appearance and grain can be very similar. It also resembles Australian red cedar. But I also found this comparison comment: "Sapele if far denser, harder, heavier and more durable than Meranti.. Meranti is a pale...

    Will it start?

This one should be easy by comparison! I recall the Sydney visit of USS Missouri for an Australian Navy Centenary, one of the most impressive ships to moor mid harbour. We got called out by loudhailer for getting too close while making a circuit to take in the dramatic design of the ship.

Bow thruster not producing much thrust

Just the switchboard breaker, though the thruster joystick has its own time limited "on" switch. I have a disconnect switch at the helm for the windlass, as well as a switchboard breaker for it.

    Will it start?

I have one of those. Test process is complete when smoke emits from the tester coils. There are electronic ones on Ebay for about the same price. No smoke and the screen display reports all.

Gb 49my alluminium aft cabin windows

It`s good you noticed. If you keep the drains clear and clean below the exit point all should be well. I doubt much water enters the window frame, and hope you enjoy your boat. PS We were in Netherlands couple of years back. Cruised Norway on the now former "Rotterdam". Enjoyed the Rotterdam...

Trawler Stability - 2nd Opinion Wanted

Having pored my way through the Eliza 1 Coronial Inquest findings I posted (see post 9 above) I recognize the OP`s alert is reasonable. A skilled skipper could be helpful, a naval architect better but less readily available and ? cost. Seems from silence the boat make won`t be identified, but...

Gb 49my alluminium aft cabin windows

Sounds like a version of what I described in post 3. Photos would help. The drains are designed to be kept clear, to work, not caulked at the exit. My guess is the drainage was fouling the shiny varnish.

Gb 49my alluminium aft cabin windows

The varnished teak trim/cover strip immediately below the windows makes me wonder if GB routed it elsewhere. My IG36`s wooden windows had internal drains set into the wood with a copper drain tube which exited below the windows, I`m not seeing that. Someone had tried clearing the tube with an...

    Charles Charger 60A

We have the same Pro Nautic charger and rate it. The Charles is likely an old ferro resonant design, good in its day. A known battery "boiler" if left on continuously but a strong charger used when needed.

Bow thruster not producing much thrust

My bowthruster ran but was similarly anemic/ineffective in performance. A check of the Optima blue top(90AH)AGM start type battery OEM fitted right next to it showed it was cactus. Replaced with same( even used same securing set screws), improvement was spectacular. Advice is 2 batts are...
