Will You Go Broke On A Boat? - 1999 Viking 60 SportYatch

There's lots of good advice on here, including spot on estimates for 1,000 hour service on QSM11s - my 1,000 hour service was $23k, including having a radiator shop rebuild the aftercoolers. Everyone's experience is different, but I have a (more than) full time job and outsourced all but basic...

    Freezer Power Use Issue

Two thoughts: 1) I didn't have an outside freezer, but I had a bimini to transom shade made that dramatically reduced heat. It was a screen-type material that you could see though and that let air through but cut the sun. That would affect more than the freezer, but it could help overall if the...

    Testing a mooring buoy

Agreed, it's usually the hardware which fails, chain or shackles. Concrete or granite (esp in new England) blocks are common, as are mushroom anchors. Less common but increasingly used are screw anchors.

    Testing a mooring buoy

There are so many things to consider - and worry about - when boating. I'm going to put this in the bucket of: don't worry about it. I'm not saying one should never be concerned about a mooring; I've owned several and had them professionally inspected and serviced twice a year. What I mean is...

    Funny story...

In Maine, moorings are regulated by the town. IIRC, the Goslings are in Yarmouth (I was in neighboring Cumberland - Town - for 20 years). Most of Goose Island (upper and lower) is owned by a local family. LL Bean uses one of the Goslings for an adventure camp of sorts.

    Fitness/Excercise as a Liveaboard

While actually cruising (on anchor), I generally did yoga and bodyweight exercises. I did have some light dumbbells, but something like this might be sufficient to turn bodyweight exercises into "strength training": Elite USA 90

    Captain for hire needed

You may also want to ask for recommendations from the broker(s) you worked with on the purchase. I'm in the process of selling my boat and am remote to it, so have relied on the broker to supply a competent captain, which he has now on multiple occasions. I would share those names, but my boat...

Did Water Enter My Engine Via Exhaust?

Thanks again all, no water ingress. I started simply, first following the advice from chriscritchett and pulled the air filter off. It was clear no water had entered. Continued with my normal checks, and am on my way north from the Keys.

Did Water Enter My Engine Via Exhaust?

Thanks all for the responses! I'll be in the engine room tomorrow morning and will report back. Regarding muffler: from the stern, there is a bit more than 4' of exhaust pipe, to a 4.5' long soundown exhaust system (muffler), both of which run through the cockpit lazerettes, then a short...

Did Water Enter My Engine Via Exhaust?

If it did, what's the best way to determine if so? Background: I was reading various posts yesterday re: hydrolocking, while in my slip down in the Florida Keys with a wicked northerly rolling 2' swells perfectly inline with my port exhaust outlet (corner of the stern). The exhaust elbow is...

    Sales taxes & Ownership

Post #11 importantly notes the distinction between sales and user taxes. You should also be aware of personal property taxes. Virginia localities can impose an annual personal property tax on vessels. Most do, and it can be a substantial annual expense.

    The next boat

Well, I don't know budget or style preferences, but if you're looking for a solid build, a bit older, that can easily cruise at 20kts when desired, one of the earlier Grand Banks Eastbay models would fit the bill. There is a shorter flybridge version (43') and one is on the market now. The...

    Not Another USCG Documentation Thread!

I just went back to take a look again. Like OP, the problem isn't that I can't renew - I can, through pay.gov or via mail. It's that the USCG directed me to the new site to renew, I signed up to the new site, and I can't do the only thing I want to do on the new site, which is renew my...

    Not Another USCG Documentation Thread!

I had exactly the same experience as the OP. I think the issue is it won't let you renew more than two months in advance. At least I think that is why the option to renew is greyed out. I made a calendar note for myself to check back on March 1 (mine is up at the end of April). I'll report back...

Dock space? Ft. Laud area. 60' Cat w/25' beam??

I'm 52' x 15' and started looking for a slip in the Keys in early June. I was on multiple lists, finally found a reasonable slip in Marathon in August, but had to pay for 70' (which was still better than many of the other marinas that were potentials). I go to Marathon on January 1, and just had...

Liveaboards in south Florida - What are our rights?

Here's a link to slips for sale at Riviera Dunes Marina, near where you are. Not inexpensive for sure, but I spent several months there and came to know many liveaboards. Note that not all slips allow liveaboards, so you would need to inquire if the slips which are for sale and would work for...

    Hatch lifts

I can't answer your question directly, but having had to replace various gas struts on my boat, here's where I've found them all: https://www.bansbach.com/en/. The website is semi-technical (at least for me) but the options are nearly endless and you can order directly. Good luck.

New Helmsman model - 38 Sedan

Definitely a beautiful boat, congratulations! As the current owner of a larger boat, and having previously owned a Halvorsen 32 "gourmet cruiser" with a single stateroom and split head / shower, I really like your layout. In some ways it is my dream boat - under 40' and a great couples cruiser...

    Entry cost

Purchase price in the list provided is excluded as best I can tell; the $20k is the costs associated with the acquisition, not the actual acquisition cost. :) And I love this post because, not currently having the time or skill to do my own work, it makes me feel better to know I'm not the only...

    Anchoring Technique - Three Questions

Ted, that is a very astute observation. It reminds me of an old Calvin & Hobbes cartoon, where Calvin asks his dad how they determine the weight limit on bridges, and his dad responds: They drive heavier and heavier trucks over it until it collapses, and then they rebuild it. (I'm not suggesting...

    Anchoring Technique - Three Questions

I'm with Simi. I haven't anchored out near as much, but I have plenty, and use the same technique: come up into wind or current, drop anchor, mark, pay out sufficient chain (usually 7:1), set snubber, leave engines on while I attend to other tasks, confirm I'm not dragging, turn off engines and...

    Engine Question

Re: the low RPM switch. On my GB Eastbay 47, idle for the twin Cummins QSM11s is 700 RPM. There is a "low RPM" switch that reduces idle to 550 RPM. It's useful around docks and in no wake zones. (Although I prefer not to use it in no wake zones and instead just run on one engine at normal idle...

Replace a Suncor anchor with... what?

Bill, it hangs a bit lower, but I haven't noticed any functional difference. I actually think it looks better, but that's because it's proper ground tackle, not the "lunch hook" that was on before. No, it doesn't bounce or jump in rough seas, and I've been in some decent stuff going up and down...
