Serendipitous moment morphs into a dream

Cool! You're doing some good things. Working on the foundation before you try and put on a roof! That's smart! Power Squadron has a lot of good information to impart. Keep taking advantage of that. In the meantime, keep looking at boats available, and walking the docks.

You might want to post the boat details here on the forum before you rush to put it with a broker. If the price is right, chances are someone here on the forum may snap it up. Also, if the price is low, you may have a difficult time getting a broker to take it on, as the perceived $$ realized...

    Will it start?

Better yet, purchase an inexpensive battery load tester and test the batteries. It eliminates the guess work! $19.99 at Harbor Freight: https://www.harborfreight.com/100-amp-612v-battery-load-tester-61747.html Or virtually the same one at NAPA for $84.69...

Serendipitous moment morphs into a dream

Norman, Any update on treating the boating disease that Peter in Weebles talked about above? We made it to Florida, and our new home. We've been spending the past 6 months refurbing the house and neglecting the boat. Probably won't get back out until January after some condensed boat...

    New member from PNW

Welcome to the forum! We really enjoyed cruising the PNW! The areas you are talking mentioned are awesome cruising! And I'd suggest going just over the border into Canada, into the Gulf Islands as well. To avoid sticker shock, you need to look into older, well maintained boats. I'll post...

Just for kicks, we have a space for one boat on our dock if someone wants to evac Fort Myers area with their boat. No charge, only 20 amp to that slip, but it's available if anyone wants to move to a safer area for a few days until the storm passes. This particular slip is limited to 4.5'...

Buying a Former Charter Boat... Good or Bad?

Whether or not it was a charter is immaterial. Current condition is king! Comments like "disconnected the showers" need further investigation. Did they just put in shut off valves? Did they repurpose the shower stalls for something else? What will be required to put them back in service...

    New limitations on Starlink coastal?

Rob, where in Florida are you spending Thanksgiving? Our trip timing is being driven by house renovation, and a scheduled trip Laura has to Egypt in mid to late December. We're center of the state, just off of the Caloosahatchee Canal. If you're headed that way, we'll probably have room on the...

Switching between a lifelong aviation experience to boating

You've got a lot of the "hard stuff" already nailed. One of the most difficult things to get used to though, is that compared to flying, Boat Stuff can happen so SO slowly! Best of luck in your future watery endeavors.

    Moorage cost search

Dave, I'll second this! We bought a dock that came with a house. Which, for the OP, long distance is not a great way to research it, but many times you may be able to find folks in areas you are interested in cruising that would be willing to rent dock space for your boat. A little...

    New member and owner

I owned a 34' Monk, vintage 1959 in the PNW, and a 1972 GB 36 in Hawaii. Both woodies. Wonderful boats as long as you kept up on the maintenance. In cold water, I'd not hesitate buying another woodie, but not in warm water. Best of luck with your boat. The boatyard in Port Townsend has some...

Helene Hurricane Preparation Fort Myers, FL

Here in Turkey Creek, off of the Caloosahatchee Canal, 40 miles East of Fort Myers, we got about 1.4" of rain, and had winds topping out at 43mph according to the anemometer on our boat's mast. Boats on the dock moved around a little, unsecured stuff in the neighborhood blew around a little, no...

Another sailor considering boating in a strait line!

If you haven't already read it, consider reading "Voyaging under Power" by Robert Beebe. A little dated, and IMHO you want to pick up a first edition, before Leishman made it an advertisement for Nordhavn, but it's a good read, even in the later editions (third and on up). Generally available...
