What provisions are OK to bring from US into Canada

I was kind of surprised about the no cannabis so I went to a government site to check out whether it can be brought into Canada. This was more for my curiosity rather than any issues raised in this thread. Here is what I found: Entering Canada Cannabis is legal for adults in Canada. However...

    Passage through Canadian rapids

I second the Waggoneer suggestion. If memory serves me correctly there is also a section in the book on how to cheat the rapids - low tide fluctuation, going with the current, etc. If you want a "training" rapid, go through Dodd narrows on your way to Nanaimo.

Go fast boat as trawler. I haven’t gone mad.

For me, this statement is really true. Its not so much the speed as the time. I like to be underway for two hours or so, then be where I'm going. Where I moor Desolation is close, in two hours I can leave Comox and be in the northern end of Desolation at the top of West Redonda Island, then...

Go fast boat as trawler. I haven’t gone mad.

My boat is a gasser with a new Merc 350 I/O stern drive. My boat gets blue tooth feeds from the engine to my Garmin MFD which includes fuel burn rate per gallon. My top speed is 28 MPH (not knots). When I was out for my sea trial after refit, the guy (retailer) who did the engine refit with...

Go fast boat as trawler. I haven’t gone mad.

A way of boating is slow gaining more popularity in the PNW and I include British Columbia in this geographic zone. The idea is to get a smaller trailerable boat that is a live aboard. I will link to one example of this and you can research or not from here. So if you look at the propaganda...

    Nanaimo to Campbell River

Henry Bay is a more a local thing. If you want to go out on your boat but not too far from the Comox marinas, you motor over to Henry Bay, drop anchor, BBQ, have a drink or two, motor back. You can overnight it but its a fair weather anchorage only, suitable for the summer months. My buddy...

Suggestions for 6 days/nights Gulf Islands / San Juan area?

I will give you a link to a tool that is a bit a pain in the butt to use but I find it helpful in planning. Don't take this distance to be exact, but close enough for government work, but from Newcastle to Plumper's Cove is 24 nautical miles. Travelling at 7 knots you would take roughly 3 1/2...

    Nanaimo to Campbell River

I would suggest taking the route between Texada and the mainland, the side Powell River is on. Its quite pleasant, Jervis Inlet is great, I recommend the Texada Boat Club dock as it has a public and well as private docking. Its tucked away, I like it so much I hate recommending it. Its also...

Suggestions for 6 days/nights Gulf Islands / San Juan area?

If they arrive in Vancouver, then boat over to Vancouver and meet them there, no long haul to Howe Sound, Indian Arm and False Creek. I am confused, anchoring in False Creek used to be allowed with a two week pass. Has that been rescinded? Okay I found this with link for permission to anchor...

Suggestions for 6 days/nights Gulf Islands / San Juan area?

Having your location as "West Coast" isn't helpful. Are you picking them up with your boat in Sidney? Are they flying into Vancouver then taking the ferry to Sidney? Are you coming up from Seattle or surrounding area to Sidney? Have your friends been to Vancouver lots before -love it or...

    Wynns’ Search for Electric Tender

If you go to the video (to lazy to find it) of the specs for their new cat you will find it is a pretty high spec'd electric/diesel hybrid. And a crap load of solar. So they will charge the batteries from the boats internal batteries which will be topped up by solar and when transiting by their...

Coffee for boating and small rant

I will get the rant out of the way quickly. At our sister forum - Cruiser's Forum - they have a section called: Provisioning: Food & Drink. Why don't we have something like this here? The link I have provided goes directly to their provisioning sub forum for you to peruse at your convenience...

    I hate Costco!!

Here are two Costco hacks for you. 1) get a buddy or buddette with a membership to Costco to purchase you a gift card, called a "Costco Shop Card" in their language. You can make a purchase above the limit of the card in store. I will link below this info. You are allowed in the store without a...

    Boat sunk in Glacier Bay

There are more than just trawlers on the forum, my boat is capable of 26 knots, others have faster boats. And if I was in Florida, my boat would be a slow poke at 26 knots and only one engine....lol. In the Pacific North West, especially going beyound Desolation, I think having forward looking...

    Boat sunk in Glacier Bay

Whenever I see discussions of forward looking sonar, I usually see some comments that it is a gimmick, you don't really need one. Others say the forward looking sonar is only good at 8 knots or less, what good is that? Most don't understand why and how to use this type of sonar, they feel if...

    Thinking of Downsizing, Options?

I have a buddy who bought a used, forget what year Nordic Tug 32 (newer ones the same size are now 34). HE works at the airbase in Comox and moors his boat there (where mine is as well). His house was close to the base but he sold it and bought a place on Mayne Island. His boat has a dingy. He...

    Galley Space Saver

This kettle strikes me as the kind of thing I'd think was quite nifty. I'd buy one and never collapse it after opening it up. On my boat I have a smaller kettle that's pretty much that size and when underway, being lazy I just throw it in the sink. Better link to the kettle...

    Marine binocular recommendations???

I have owned the Bushnell mariner binoculars with compass, I rarely used the compass. I have owned Nikon, Zeiss, a marine binocular whose name I can't recall, I still have it. I bought the Vortex Diamondback binocular to help me with my bird photography and threw them in my drawer by my helm...

2 Men in a queen sized berth?

Even though in queen beds, use two sets of sheets and covers and anything else so you're not sharing a sheet or cover. Each have your own, just happen to be on the same mattress. :) I follow a vlog of a couple living Svalbard in Norway. Apparently Norwegians and Swedes and other countries I...

Schucker 436 Motorsailer / Pilot House

I know John Wayne cruised the Washington, BC and Alaska waters on his converted minesweeper, did he moor his boat at this marina, curious as to the name. In my younger years I would have lusted for your boat. I don't know how many times I sat out in the cockpit of a sailboat in wet gear getting...

Can I anchor in Canadian water?

In BC, the ocean bottom is federal so if you only anchor you are on federal property. There was an interesting article on private buoys here in coastal BC. The water the buoy floats in is BC territory, but the anchor system on the bottom is federal territory. I'm to lazy to look up the rules...
