    Automatic Power Selector... why?

I have no idea why they chose a fuse like that. 10 amp blade fuse would work fine.

    Automatic Power Selector... why?

That device does not do any switching. It does what's called diode "ORing" meaning that whatever is connected to the "load" terminal will get power from "source 1" OR "source 2" and assuming at least one source is present, it gives uninterrupted power to the load. There's never any switch time...

    Praise for Dickinson parts service

My Dickinson Mediterranean range was having a few issues (one of the igniters had stopped working and all three stove top burners took awhile to latch on) after 6 years of heavy use. I bought three new thermocouples for the burners, a new thermocouple for the oven, and a new igniter, directly...

Caterpillar 3208 Fuel Injection Pump Symptoms

I have never taken one apart, so I don't know the answer. When mine started leaking, I took it to a place called "Diesel's Injection Service" in Bow NH and it cost me $2000 to have it disassembled, inspected, re-sealed and tested (the shop has a really cool machine that runs the pump through all...

Caterpillar 3208 Fuel Injection Pump Symptoms

My 3208TA pumps have three lines that drain a leak to the bilge as you described, depending on which part of the pump is leaking. My advice is rig a catch can until you can get the pump re-sealed. Supposedly there is one failure mode that is apparently quite easy to fix with the pump installed...

    Onan 8KW MDKDJ Coolant?

I run CAT ELC in mine and in my CAT mains. This way, I only have to carry one type of extra coolant.

    Fresh water pump lifespan

I have found that the most common failures for diaphragm pumps like that are the pressure switch, and valves that leak a little pressure back toward the tank which causes cycling as though there's a slow leak somewhere. Expensive and cheap pumps of that style seem to have the same issues. The...

Interesting "trick" to improve dual alternator charging performance

I realize I left out an important fact: The alternators are set to such low voltages (13.5 and 13.8) to keep them from overheating when re-charging a big house bank in automatic mode. This is no big deal for the bulk charge, but to get from 80% to 100% SOC, 13.8V is extremely slow. With my...

    Alternator Over Charging question

Was gonna suggest that the 12.1 volts on the exciter was the issue. It should be the close to the same as the alternator output as it's typically used as the reference voltage for the regulator.

Interesting "trick" to improve dual alternator charging performance

My CAT 3208TA engines come from the factory with 51 amp, small-frame Leece Neville alternators that are pre-set to 13.5 volts output. They do not have an adjustable voltage. There is no room to install large frame alternators. Both alternators were originally connected to the start battery and...

3208 Port engine still getting salt water into the coolant.

This would be the only place where the water pressure is greater than the coolant pressure. I'd pull a coolant hose off of the water heater and see if water comes out steadily.

    Generator losses raw water prime.

I think you need a new pump. They are not all that expensive. The Onan part number is 132-0277 which cross references to the Oberdorfer N202M-11, which is around 300 bucks. Onan prices are absurd. Here's one for $295: Oberdorfer FIP Pump Model# N202M-11. They typically do not include the...

Great Bay, Exeter and Newmarket, NH

I know those bridges. The current really rips through there. Welcome back! If you have Twin Disc transmissions, don't forget to keep the props from spinning in the current at your mooring or slip while the engines are off.

    Missing Coolant - CAT 3208

Drain the sea water section of the HE and leave the lower sea water hose off. Use a pressure tester to pressurize the cooling system and look for coolant out of the HE lower sea water hose outlet. NOTE: Even if you do find coolant from the HE there's a small possibility that there's more than...

Victron Multiplus II firmware upgrade gone wrong (and fix)

They became aware and they contacted me to do the configuration work. I am pretty familiar with the tools and how to configure the inverter, it's just that none of settings or changes worked to make it operate again. It was pretty much bricked.

Victron Multiplus II firmware upgrade gone wrong (and fix)

My friends/marina neighbors have a Victron Multiplus II 24/3000 120V inverter that was working perfectly. They got a notice on their Victron Connect app that there was a firmware update available and the notice included an option to install upgrade using the app. They assumed this was a good...

Rule 35 Sound Signals in Restricted Visibility

In my captains class, I was taught to give way to any radar contact on a collision course in restricted visibility, The reason given was that you can't tell if the other vessel can "see" you or not. It's Rule 19.

    Funny story...

I don't recall seeing a name on the boat, but I would probably not publicly shame the skipper anyway; maybe he's a great guy that had a crappy day. Additionally, I got a funny story out of the situation and I've been waked worse.

Mercury 2 cycle 9.9 outboard leftover bolts (?)

Those are M6X1 (6mm diameter, 1 thread per millimeter) bolts which typically have a 10mm head. They are many of them in the 30mm length in a 9.9 two stroke Mercury. If the motor was ever converted to remote control, electric start, or remote steering the conversion kits would likely have a bunch...

Great Bay, Exeter and Newmarket, NH

Decided to do a little cruising close to home. Anchored out in Great Bay a couple of times and explored by dinghy. We have anchored near the #7 green can and near the #4A red nun. Both were excellent anchorages with good holding and no boat wakes after sunset. Most boat wakes you do encounter...
