I just heard back from the testing lab (super fast turn around). No asbestos was detected so that's a relief. I'm guessing most, if not all boats of that vintage would be in the same category.

I just sent sample out for testing. I should know within 24 hours so I'll post the results in case anyone has similar concerns.

Yes, both lines split off from the same supply. I'm sure now it's just as you have suggested. The dripless seal is not original and that required it's own water source when it was added sometime later which explains the two lines.

Thanks Dave, that makes perfect sense. While I'm at it I might as well remove the stern tube, slide it off the shaft and inspect and clean it up. I'll know then what the screws are doing but I suspect it's to hold the bearing in place as you have suggested.

But you said that Brian from "American Marine" (he's actually the owner of American Diesel Corp) said that running it hot would ruin #6 cylinder. There was no mention of a frozen valve at that point in the conversation. Why would running it hot only affect #6 cylinder?

This is a very interesting discussion but when I told my wife about it she didn't share my enthusiasm. I just don't get women. So my question is, why did Brian at ADC think #6 cylinder was in jeopardy and not any of the others? That's a key point that I don't understand.

I'm not aware of that option. Can you point me to something which would work in this way?

I might end up doing just that but that involves running a new dedicated AC circuit so it wasn't my first choice.
