Strange Heart Freedom 25 power numbers

Perhaps someone has seen this before. I have a Xantrex Heart Freedom 25 dating probably around 2008. Lately while charging in bulk or absorption modes it draws 120V 25 amps whether it is charging the batteries at 10 amp or 40 amp (24 volts). This does not make sense to me. This means...

Connecting 8 batteries for my house bank

Hello All There appears to me to be two main ways to connect 8 6v batteries to make a 12v bank, or 8 12v to make a 24v bank. Plan A:* pair each battery with another in series, making 4 pairs, then parallel all the four pairs, or,Plan B Parallel two sets of four batteries, then connect in series...

    Ethylene vs propylene glycol

John Deere sells both for my 4045 135hp marine engines. I'm going to flush and replace, any thoughts on what is normally used? I have been told conflicting thoughts. Thanks!

Yearly battery math and a surprise

I actually have a 24V system, but the below is converted to 12V equivalents as that is how many folks and charts think. Every year I load test my AGM house batteries to see how they are doing. The resting voltage starts about 13V. This year I put a 13 amp load on for 21 hours, or total draw of...

Chasing air in fuel line two years

I should have posted this earlier, but attached is a pic of my problem fuel piping. The day tank is at the very bottom of the pic and you can see various lines and ball valves going in and out. The engine filters and engine pump is about the same height as the Racors. All in all this seems...

    Best Digital multi-meter for boats

My Blue Sea clamp meter has served me well. Perhaps not a Fluke, but for $150 very useful and includes clamp DC Amps

Chasing air in fuel line two years

I want to thank everyone for your replies. You have all given me a lot of good ideas and I'm ready to roll up my sleeves again in April. I hope to post a solution then.

Chasing air in fuel line two years

Thank you all for responding. You have given me several new ideas and I will press on. To clarify a few things you all brought up: - We never have problems while under way or on the hook over night and under way the next day. Only have problems when boat sits for a few weeks. - Yes, Racor O...

Chasing air in fuel line two years

I have been writing this for two years in my head, but wanted to exhaust every troubleshooting skill I have (not much evidently) before posting.* Our boat has two John Deere 4045 engines with standard primary and secondary engine* fuel filters, supplied by the standard Racor 500 series dual...

Proper method to seal flybridge instrument cutout??

Thanks Capt Jack. Just left West Marine with a tube of West Systems Six10. Stay safe.

Proper method to seal flybridge instrument cutout??

Hello. I'm adding a rudder angle indicator to my exposed flybridge instrument panel. After cutting out a 3" hole I have layers of exposed fiberglass and plywood on the sides. What is the proper way to seal the area against water intrusion in case the new gauge seals were to leak? Varnish...

Looking for quality insurance, does it exist?

Thanks for the suggestions, I will look into all of them. I looked at Markel about a month ago, but they would not write unless I put the boat on the hard in the winter. Not a good option for my needs.

Looking for quality insurance, does it exist?

I decided to read, in detail, my policy on our 52' boat. To my surprise, the policy had been rewritten from the last time I had read in detail. Depending on which side of the fence you were on one could argue almost nothing was covered. I do not want the lowest priced policy, just a quality...

    Thread sealant on engine/stabilizer zincs

I believe the magazine Practical Sailor did a test a few months back and found that it did not matter using tape or compound or whatever. In all cases the sealant did not insulate and use whatever you like. That said, I like Steve's idea testing continuity to make sure.

    Lead acid battery life

Interesting. In the link above Trojan seems to address equalizing in "flooded batteries only" as if to ignore AGMs. Anyone know why?

    Lead acid battery life

I have no name Chinese AGMs that are about 12 years old and currently well maintained except that they have never been equalized. My 24v 500AH house bank, after 225AH has been used overnight, reads about 24.6V without resting in the morning indicating well over 50% remaining. Yes, I have...

Webasto 2010 hydronic heater smoking problems

Thanks everyone for your ideas. I will get with Sure Marine tomorrow and order a nozzle and igniter. And then see if I can figure out how to change it myself. I'm sure it is probably easy to do the second time <smile>.

Webasto 2010 hydronic heater smoking problems

Hello all. I have a Webasto DBW 2010 with about 6000 total hours. It was rebuilt about 200 hours ago with new motor but not sure what else was done. All worked fine after the rebuild, but now I’m having the following smoking problem: • Unit starts up and air exits the exhaust • After about...

Mis-matched chain and gypsy from factory??

Mystery solved. Muir just confirmed that my gypsy is for 5/16" high test. Wow. No wonder 3/8" or 10mm chain is not working real well.

Mis-matched chain and gypsy from factory??

The boat was built in 2007/08 and purchased new by my buddy and brought to Alaska. It's home is in Whittier Alaska and every voyage involves one or multiple nights on the hook, so the anchor has been deployed a lot relative to boats in the lower 48. I know that the gypsy has never been...

Mis-matched chain and gypsy from factory??

Thanks everyone. Semi 60, yes I did find and DL the Muir chart but did not see a 133 coded gypsy. But, you have prompted this idea, I see the 5/16 wheel is coded MPH1200133. Could it be possible that the stamped 133 referers to this gypsy? That would sure explain a lot - 3/8 chain in a 5/16"...

Mis-matched chain and gypsy from factory??

My windless, a Muir Cheetah 2500, is matched with what I have always thought of as a 3/8” chain fitted when the boat was built in China. It works great with light loads, say retrieving 40’ of chain. But with longer picks or with 40’ plus anchor the chain rides up in the gypsy and eventually...

Wrapping fuel hose to stop diesel smell

Thanks all for your replies. To clarify a bit, the hose is half in Stateroom cabinetry and half in the engine room. The stateroom half in reasonably accesable, but the engine room half is not. So I could wrap the half that is in the stateroom and potentially solve the problem in the short...

Wrapping fuel hose to stop diesel smell

Hello all. My fuel tank fill hose, about 1.5”, runs through the corner of the master stateroom. Long story short, it has a portion of that has a small reverse grade and fuel can collect at this low point. It is good American made A2 marine fuel hose, but after 12 years is weeping fuel odors...
