    Trim tabs

My old Fairways Trawler 38. 16.6 tons with a long deep keel. Twin 212 BHP Ford Sabres. The hydraulics were removed, and the tabs were fixed down. Would make 18kn and cruise at 12 to 14. I considered there was little penalty at 7 kn or 9 kn long range cruising.

    Alternative to varnish

Teak treatment My Fairways Trawler 38 had teak bulwark capping and trimming. Tried many treatments, and ended with SEMCO. Sand to bare wood, and apply the Semco teak cleaner/brightener, then the Semco treatment. Test to check re treatment by dripping water on the surface. If it soaks in - re...

    Who has/uses AIS?

I am located on the buisy River Humber, which is governed by a port authority. We are not allowed to leave the port if visibility is less than two cable lengths ( 1320feet), unless you have AIS and radar. In clear visibility AIS is helpful when approaching the main shipping lanes, As the control...

Water blasting barnacles below waterline while diving?

underwater hydro blast cleaning A few years ago, I was involved with an underwater blast cleaning operation. They were removing a concrete coating from an undersea pipeline. Depth 60ft. The jetting guns were very specialised so as to neutralise the jet reaction. Basically had an equal and...

    Espar Heater with unreliable ignition

My 1980 Trawler yacht has an 8000w Eberspacher diesel heater, which I believe is original. Not been serviced since 1999. It was sometimes tripping out on start-up and thereafter refusing to operate. It runs off the engine batteries. When underway it works fine. Our local agent explained that...

    Fairways Fisher 38 trawler

I have had mine for 6 years. Excellent sea boat, on the North Sea. Mine has twin Ford 212hp Sabres. I think this is the best combination. Economical cruising at 7/8 kn, but capable of 16kn to 18kn, if you are in a hurry. Fortunately, been a houseboat for 20 years, so has only 1300 hours, on the...

    prop speed coating

Hi Magna6882 On the river Humber, my props receive heavy cementation, and barnacles. I coat the props, shafts, rudders and P struts with 3 coats of International Trilux 33, following a suitable etching primer. Gives excellent protection between annual haul-outs with no loss in performance...

    Anyone not rename their boat?

My pal brought an old wreck in the early 70's, which he restored into running condition. He found "Jacksonville 1" carved on the bulkhead, so contacted the US harbour authorities. Turned out it was originally named "Poopooflee" in the 1930's. The authorities supplied him with the history, name...

    Anyone not rename their boat?

Renaming vessel I have never renamed any of the boats that I have previously owned. My current boat was Lloyds registered "Sharne Lisa" in 1981, and the two previous owners kept the original name; as I am.

    Boat Performance

Sharne Lisa I think you would not be wise to fit 4 blade propellers, as you will overload the engines at higher RPM. My 38 year old 38ft 16.5 ton DW semi displacement trawler yacht has identical twin Ford Sabre 212BHP engines, swinging 26 inch 3 blade propellers. I make similar but slightly...

    Holding tank

Holding tank odour I try to flush as much water into the tank as is convenient. Also I add chemical toilet liquid to the toilet. then pump out regularly. We too try to use shore facilities as much as possible.
