ICW East Bay to Lake Wimico

Hi! Got a question regarding draft and bridge clearance in that area Would a sailboat which draws 6' and clearance 65' be able to travel from Gulf of Mexico into East Bay(near panama city)? The Dupont Bridge has a 50' clearance, so can't enter from the west. From east side there seem to be...

    Turbo vs NA

"If you want an engine designed for long life, get one rated for continuous duty and ignore whether it has a turbo or not." How do I know a engine is designed for continuous duty? Is there a special name of keyword I should look for? Or do you have an example of one of those engines? Thx!

    Just general thanks . . .

Same here, special thanks to all those people who answered my so many very layman kind of questions! You guys are awesome.

    Turbo vs NA

So looks like natural is going out of fashion quickly. Would one be able to convert a turbo engine into a NA? I understand there will be HP loss, but suppose one can live with that? Is it also going to be very expensive? Would I be able to have the kind of longevity enjoyed by a real NA engine?

Thanks for the explanation. It's sad they stopped producing it. Hope yanmar dont follow the suit!

    Turbo vs NA

Sorry guys, Some of the replies from my last post prompted me more questions, and I feel like it should be a separate thread: "We cruise at 2700 rpm and the turbo kicks in somewhere over 1000 rpm or so" I read some engine can be either turbo or natural, like John Deere 4045DFM70. But what does...

    Fuel consumption at low speed?

OK, so if I comapre 4JH80 vs 4JH57, one Turbo, one natual, at 40HP, both seems to consume same amount of fuel, roughly 2.25GPH I guess I don't fully understand when people say "Turbo charged engine is more efficient", what does that really mean? Does it mean turbo charge can get more max HP on...

    Fuel consumption at low speed?

I did some research on engine fuel consumption, I found at low rpm, bigger/smaller engines' fuel consumption are more or less similar. Take for example: Yanmar 4JH5E, naturally aspirated, rated 53HP, burns about 3GPH at 3000RPM, Yanmar 6LY3, turbo charged, 380HP, at 1600RPM it burns roughly...

    Fuel consumption at low speed?

Thank you guys! So actually the numbers are comparable with sailboats. That gives me more confidence. I have seen so many 1MPG, 2MPG for power boats on boattest.com, have been wondering with most boats have only a few hundred gallon fuel, how do these boats go long distance at all? Now I...

    Fuel consumption at low speed?

I've read on line that sailboats can get 8MPG under power(no sail) ~ at low speed like 5-6knots. Obviously power boats have very different engine, hull design etc. I wonder in general what kind of MPG can a power boat get at low speed? Or could you tell me for your boat, what max MPG can you...

How do I properly read these specs?

Tnanks Cappy, Chris and THD! Nah I am not looking for to load a lot of people. Just me and the Admiral that's it. I figured I will be a LRC kind of guy, so just trying to get a sense how much fuel, supplies etc can I load onto certain boat.

How do I properly read these specs?

Wait, I am still confused, how wide is your beam? Even if I count your boat as a square box: 58' x beam x 1/12 x 7.48(CuFt to Gallon) x 8.34(water weight per gallon) = 10000lbs If my formula is correct, the beam needs to be at least 33'? Is my formula wrong?

How do I properly read these specs?

10,000lbs is just one inch? Woo, that's much bigger than I had in mind. Thanks!

How do I properly read these specs?

OK, Thanks! If there's no general guidance I can follow, could someone tell me for a boat like Hatteras 53 MotorYacht(or similar boat), how much weight can it carry? Including water, fuel, everything on top of dry weight? Not looking for anything precise, just a rough number.

How do I properly read these specs?

Been reading some boat specs on boattraders.com, got quite confused. Dry Weight: So I guess this means hull, engine, machineries, structure, but no fuel, water nor people? Displacement: What does that mean? Full displacement? Hull displacement? Is there any convention people follow or do...

    Another electricity question

I did realize the AC would be a huge draw comparing to other appliances. Even if it doesn't run continuously, likely need a gen. Thanks for the advice! I plan to just read books, post insane questions on line for a couple of years(so pls bear with me for a while :), then definitely join a club...

    Another electricity question

Thank you guys! Yeah, the refrigerator/freezer numbers I found on line, for Bilge pump and air conditioner, I really have no idea how long/often they would need to run, I guess it would have to depend on the condition of the boat(which I don't even have one) and weather etc, hence just throwing...

    Another electricity question

Sorry guys, need your help again. I've read some books, now trying to practice my understanding of batteries. Could you please verify my calculation below? Nothing is real, purely trying to work out the formula: If I want to calculate how much battery do I need for overnight staying on a boat...

    What's wrong with Aluminium hull?

From what I read, Aluminium is cheaper, lighter, stronger and last much much longer than fiberglass, if these are true, why fiberglass is still the main stream hull material, not aluminium? The cons of aluminium: Noisy, Colder, Galvanic corrosion etc, nothing seems to me too serious, am I...

    Electricity Question

OK, Thank you guys. If I understand you guys correctly, when I go from pure theory to real life case, I need 50% reserve to not discharge the battery more than 50%. Even for a "true" deep cycle battery? In that case I wonder what's the point of rating that battery at 1000AH? Might as well just...

    Electricity Question

I am trying to understand marine battery ratings. Everything in theory, not counting start surge, reserve etc. let's say I have an appliance rated as 1000w, I run it 1/2 of the time overnight(12 hours), so that's 6 hours continuously. Let's suppose the battery is 12V: 1000w / 12v x 6hr = 500Amp...

    Boat weight question

Some other observations: From this website: Approximate Diesel Generator Fuel Consumption Chart If you compare 20kw vs 40kw. At full load 20kw uses 1.6 GPH, while the 40kw at 1/2 load uses 2.3GPH. That's a whooping 40% difference for the same payload. Isn't that an indication that smaller engine...

    Boat weight question

OK, You guys got me all confused again. Let me try to ask the question again: If I travel from point A to point B, using above two boats KK: Speed: 7.7MPH, fuel consumption: 3.1MPG BT: Speed: 7.5MPH, fuel consumption: 1.6MPG Keep in mind both are under hull speed. Question: Why KK, being 3 times...

    Boat weight question

So the "overwhelming factor" here is actually the hull shape, not the weight, Woo, this is an eye opening point. I never would have thought that!
