    39' steel pilothouse trawler

That is one fine looking boat! I like every thing I see. Only problem is it is on the wrong coast.

How often to start the engines?

There are thousands of gillnet boats here in Alaska that sit on the hard for ten months out of the year. Does not seem to hurt their engines much.

    Foam

PDR out of Washington builds them for SeaSport and other brands. They do nice work and mine was a perfect fit. That is how I would go for a factory built metal bracket. I also built a bracket out of glass for a 21 foot Sintes hull I built. When replacing the stringers I ran them out through the...

    Foam

Having done rotten transoms a couple times you will be better off if the wood is totally rotten. If it is just wet and a little soft it is much harder to remove. Does not make much difference when working on the stringers. It is a long and messy job but it does not take much brain power :)

    Foam

It has been my experience that even the closed cell foam will absorb water. It does help stiffen things up and helps with noise. Like many things it is a give and take deal. I am a fan of water tight bulkheads myself.

    Volcanic Eruption

I look at Mt Redoubt out my living room window. When it went up it was an amazing show that lasted for days. I will always remember watching lighting racing horizontal around the mountain. And it did look like a nuke had gone off at times. There was enough ash in the air to keep a lot of power...

    Help choosing 15hp dingy motor

Food for thought my 9.9 Suzuki with electric start and power tilt weighs 127 pounds. A lot heavier than the old 2-stroks.

    Help choosing 15hp dingy motor

I have a 10 year old 9.9 Suzuki. It has been a very good engine. I use it for salmon trolling all summer. I have no idea of the hours but it is a bunch. If I were buying a new one I might go with the 20hp as they are the same engine. But it would have to be EFI as those just start and run...

rudder question (marine trader 40 sundeck)

During my years commercial salmon fishing I only needed help getting back to port one time. The steering arm broke where it clamps onto the rudder shaft. Lucky for me there another boat close by with engine problems. We put a bunch of fenders between the boats and tied them side by side. I...

    fuel tank fabricator wanted

https://speedytanks.com/ These guys did nice work for me and the shipping cost was not too bad. I am guessing the cost is $10-15 per gallon now.

    Collision and demasting

Sure does not sound like much hull damage. I know nothing about sail rigging costs so there is that. Can you post pictures of the damage?

    Collision and demasting

I think a lot of it depends on how much you are willing and able to do yourself. Not apples to apples but last fall I hit a rock with my small power boat. Ripped open a eight foot section of the keel and wiped out the lower unit on the outboard. The insured value was 45,000. They cut me a check...

    Prop recommendation

The 3208 was a 210 N/A. I think idle was about 700 rpm, not sure I ever noted the speed at idle. I run her at the top of the green, 2550, and that gave me 13 knots. She would run up to a full 2850 but the pyro climbed quickly so I only did that for very short runs. That high rpm gave me 16...

    Prop recommendation

Will the engine run up to red line plus maybe 50 more rpm? Are you sure about the gear ratio? I ask because I had a 34 foot gill netter with a 3208 and 2-1 506. Prop was 24x15 four blade and that was all the prop I could run. You are turning a lot more prop.

    Fiberglass hole fill

I was not saying epoxy is not the best resin. I am saying its better properties will not make up for poor prep. The time I was speaking of is not the only time I have seen it, just the worse. Also when building up a 1/2 inch of glass or more for a keel area there is nothing wrong with using a...

    1999 Pilot 30

Yep the Pilot 11 has a night and day better set up. The factory must have seen the problem and taken care of it when the updated things.

    Fiberglass hole fill

Epoxy is not a substitute for good prep work. A good quality iso or vinyl ester with good prep will do just fine. My buddy just stretched his 37 foot Delta that had been stretched 5foot before using epoxy. He was able to get a nail bar under the epoxy and pop off large hunks of the epoxy...

    1999 Pilot 30

The boat has a dripless seal now. I would bet it is well past time for it to be replaced.I can't help thinking of what a failure well offshore would be like. Surely some of the guys with these boats have dealt with the problem already.

    Fiberglass hole fill

First thing it to get the keel iron out of the way. You can not do a proper job with it there. You need to remove enough glass so you get back to good glass and all signs of delamination are gone. Tip: a tile cutting blade on a 4.5 inch grinder goes through glass like butter. Grind things well...

    1999 Pilot 30

This is just one of several different boats I am looking at. Weighing the pro's and con's of each.

    1999 Pilot 30

I just looked at a very nice Pilot 30 but the stuffing box concerns me. How in the world do you service the thing or get to it in an emergency? Not only is it wedged down inthe keel with no room around it but it is covered with the fuel tank. Wondering how those with one handle the situation.

    Californian 34 1984

The owner was not available when I went to look at the boat so still a lot of questions and a sea trial needs done. The boats outside looked just like what you would expect of a boat left sitting for two years. Clearly not prepped for selling. But the inside was a different story. All wood work...

    New to me Sunnfjord

As stated above they have a good rep as a work boat.

    Californian 34 1984

Going to get another look at the boat tomorrow. This will be the first time I have looked at it with an eye to owning it.

    Californian 34 1984

I have not personally seen the boat in 3-4 years but I have spoken with the owner now that I see it is up for sale.Owner is selling because he no longer uses the boat. It has not moved in two years. Stated engines are Saber Perkins rated at 220 hp. I did not know the 6354s were ever rated that...
