    Twin Engines, Locking One Shaft

Thanks for the suggestion. I am also thinking about installing servo valves with lights indicating both open and closed. Enough to think about.

    Twin Engines, Locking One Shaft

The valves I installed worked well until one failed which indeed backflooded the engine that was not running. We fixed the issue by removing the injectors, sucking the water from the cylinders (lucky, it happend in a sweet water area) and thus removing the water. We blew the engine dry by using...

    Twin Engines, Locking One Shaft

In my attached post I was considering letting the non driven props run loose (I also have 120 Lehmans with Borg Warner, so no damage to the gears) but lubricating it from the running opposite engine via a bypass. I followed through and I installed one way valves with 0.03 bar opening pressure...

    Waves at open sea

My trip starts April second and I am taking stock of what has been said in this threat. I got all I wanted out of it and even more. Good seamanship and common sense rules. Asking the locals before you leave. Risk stays but is made manageable. Use Windy Pro but use other local sources as well...

    Twin Engines, Locking One Shaft

Water lubricated stern shaft seals I asked the supplier of my Manecraft stern shaft seal if I would damage the seal if I run my twin engine 40 ft Ocean Marine trawler on one engine, which I do on open waters to save fuel and to let my Lehmans run in a higher rev bracket. The answer was that the...

    Waves at open sea

Thanks to all This thread has been very useful for me, thanks for your links and all contributions. I am sure that as soon as I am at sea I will relax again but I am just curious how my trawler will behave. I did cross seas in sailing ships, sometimes even with strong winds, but the design of...

    Waves at open sea

I just read Bowball's question "Weather information Vancouver to Alaska" as well as retriever's answer, which lead me to 2 very useful web sites. On the other side of the ocean I will start a similar journey in April from the Netherlands, via Helgoland and the north of Denmark to Stockholm. It...

Close all valves in the harbor?

Final resolution In the mean time I have all valves operable, they are 13 now. 2 remote ones with a push/pull cable. for the rest I will sneak behind the generator or lift floor boards to operated them. Forces me to socialise with the engine compartment as well which is always good for issue...

Close all valves in the harbor?

Looked at the hoses as well, all wired PVC. They look good without blemishes, no clue how to find hidden threats here though. Guess I will make it a 2016-2017 task to replace at least some of them. Got some good tips here, thanks!

Close all valves in the harbor?

Yes, it surprised me too. 3 are blind, (one is sort of a drain next to the keel), 3 for the rear bathroom, 3 for the front bathroom, 1 for the kitchen, 1 for the boiler (in case of high pressure), 2 for the engines, 2 for the bilge pumps, 3 for the generator (don't know yet how that works) and...

Close all valves in the harbor?

Thanks for your answers, it mirrors pretty much the same divide as over here in the Netherlands. The real issue is likely issues with the insurance if the boat sinks with the valves open. The only way to operate the unreachable sea cocks is to make them powered, who has a tip for a reliable...

Close all valves in the harbor?

I have been looking for a thread on this topic but did not find one through the search engine on this site, hence this new thread. I have bought an Ocean Marine 40 Foot "classic" Trawler built in 1978. The boat is in very good condition. During this winter I store it dry inside a large and...
