DeFever owners-- what information can you provide?

If you like the vessel, make an offer subject to a good stiff out-of-the-water marine survey, including engines and a sea trial. Include whatever deficiencies you would expect the owner to correct on his dime.

    Collision and demasting

Buying a boat without a broker

Catalina Jack - go back and read the original post, the fellow is asking for advice "useful tips from experience after having bought a boat without a broker, whether or not the seller used a broker" he does not sound very knowledgeable in a boat sale transaction. Certainly, the owner being...

Buying a boat without a broker

Use a broker I urge you to use a qualified yacht broker. the seller pays the commission so offer what you think it is worth and leave a deposit. the broker takes care of negotiating, finance, surveys, sea trial, escrow, and title typically. He/she will be licensed and bonded. Ask around...

    Careless in every way

I have worn out a lot of spearguns, powerful guns. I question if one could penetrate a fiberglass hull, maybe with a powerhead but even with that you would think it would just crack the laminates. Even if it blew a one inch hole through the hull it would take hours if not days to fill any...

    Crusader 454 with misfire issue

replace plug wires I routinely replace my plug wires about every 5 years or about two changes of plugs. The wires don't seem to do very well in a marine environment. My twin IH 240 cubic inch sixes have been in my boat almost 60 years and they have always run great by keeping up with routine...

Bottom paint, do it yourself or hire a pro?

Bottom Paint I haul my boat every 2 or 3 years. I always have the yard do it. As someone mentioned painting is the easy part. Prep is everything, then there is hazaardus waste disposal. I think I paid about $1500 the last time including pressure wash, sanding, new zincs. 36' by 10'...

    Albin 43 depower

The motors in my boat are approaching 60 years old, I think they are tired but they still run good and burn minimal oil. Outside of normal maintenance the only repair that has been done is a valve job on one of them, well and a rebuilt carborator also. I carefully nurse them along and they...

1935 65' Wooden Boat Hull Replacement options

I would start with a good stiff out of the water survey and then start figuring costs. You could easily get into 6 figures, maybe even high 6 figures! She is probably carvel planked I would stick to that. Hopefully she has been refastened a time or two below the water line.

    Fiberglassing an older hull

There are plenty of classic yachts out there that have been fiberglassed up to the waterline. Many of them were glassed in the 1960s and they are still going fine. When I was young in the 60s I had an El Toro that was glassed and later a strip planked Whitehall boat that was glassed, as far as...
