First Big Boat, First Big Step

Half the dock used to come out to "watch the show" when I came back to the slip with my first boat. Nice job!

DIY Bottom Job - Your Experience

Thank you all for your very helpful feedback. In regards to the yard comments, we have a floating lift. As a member, you get a free up and down every year, but pay by the day for it to sit there. They have a pressure washer you can rent or you can bring your own. I'm not sure there are any...

DIY Bottom Job - Your Experience

In my area, we don't have a ton of pleasure boats. I'm a member of the local yacht club and we have a lift, but one of the guys that used to do bottom jobs moved away and the other is semi-retired. I wanted to have mine done last year, but couldn't find anyone to do the work, so I'm seriously...

    Weterbeke Gen Wont stay on

I've had the same issue with my Westerbeke and both times it was the fuel shutoff solenoid. They apparently crap out frequently because once I figured out what is was, I recognized that part in the used part bin of my boat. Very simple to change out. It looks like this. Not sure of your...

Has anyone bought a bit of a fixer upper??? 46’ Jefferson

Steve, I have the exact same boat. Mine needed work primarily from just sitting and never being used. You will know your boat inside and out after working on it and then cruising. I saw where you said you were thinking about skipping the survey. I would suggest you still do a survey, which...

    Refinishing Nameboards

It's been awhile since I did the same thing, but if I remember correctly I sanded as you have done, stained to color preference, and then applied the vinyl decals. I was told not to put a sealer over the decals, so just sand, stain, decals. Again, not an expert, but you don't want to do...

Remote WiFi Security Cam for Boat

I have them on my boat, but you need access to the router initially to set it up. Once done, it only requires WiFi and will reacquire the signal if dropped. I use Tenvis cameras off of Amazon. I'm sure others will work the same, but it's great to get an email if there is motion on the boat...

Looking to meet a liveaboard in North East.

Two comments from the peanut gallery: 1. 36'...do you realize how small that is? 2. BandB just gave you rock solid advice. I may print that out and read it to my kids.

    Airbnb your boat?

Does anyone do this? I don't mean chartering, but just renting your boat out as a hotel? I wonder if a marina would allow that type of activity? It would be an interesting way to defray some of the ownership costs, but I can only imagine the type of damage someone could do that wasn't...

If you have an old boat;how was your first year aboard

We also have a 30 year old Taiwanese boat. Things break, we (I) fix them. Once you catch up the main items, things get more fun because you can choose what items to fix/upgrade instead of the boat selecting them for you. Hang in there...you're going to get to know your boat very well.

How are you at backing your boat into a slip? Disney Dream needs help

It was obviously the wife's fault. It's her job to holler if we're going to hit something while docking.

    Special Toilet Paper needed?

Of course you don't understand, because my wife and children haven't visited your septic system. I know I know, you would teach them how much tp to use and what should and should not be flushed, much like I've already done. I promise you they will still clog it up, but you, yes you, will need...

    Special Toilet Paper needed?

On my boat, the rule is that if it does not naturally come out of your body, it does not go into the toilet. We have a small, sealed garbage can in each head for everything else. I also notate the location of a lovely, single stall bathroom at the market near the marina for anyone that may...

    Where does your A/C Drain?

As a follow up for anyone that comes across this thread in the future, my issue was consistent, significant water in the bilge area. I thought it must be a leaky through hull or something similar. Turns out it was the A/C condensation drain line that ended in the bilge, which I've routed back...
