    Heating Hot Water From Engine

(I have read with much concern, that the water heater manufactures recommend using a non toxic antifreeze like Sierra when heated by engine coolant in case the heat exchanger within fails; they say poisonous antifreeze can get in to the domestic water supply. Is this something that anybody...

Attaching auto pilot arm to rudder shaft

Steve, I need to purchase an autopilot system; the old one that came with the boat was very old with dc electric motor and some belts, Went into the dumpster. The steering system I have is Hynautic and the two helm pumps and reservoir are at Southern Charm for a rebuild. I junked all the copper...

    Heating Hot Water From Engine

I just received the keel cooler from Fernstrum (nice unit btw) and my plan is to have the single Lugger coolant travel to the hot water heater (undecided on which brand) and to a box heater/defroster from Real. I am guessing that I would have a way to shut off/divert the box heater when I am in...

    VHF range?

Assuming good co-ax connections and a properly working VHF radio, with your antenna height of 32' above the water and accounting for earth curvature with no obstructions, you should broadcast and receive to 6.9 miles.

Switch to 24V or 12/24V Hybrid Electrical System

Great responses, thank you. But what about charging the 3 battery house bank? Will the 100 Amp alternator, after it replenishes the starting battery of its start up drain, can I use it to slowly recharge the house bank while underway?

Switch to 24V or 12/24V Hybrid Electrical System

I read all these posts just to get to the last one by MYTraveler. That's the question I want to post; my bow thruster and windlass ( already purchased) are 24v DC and I want the rest of the boat to be 12v. All my past boats were 12v and I understand it and am comfortable with it. I planned to...

Never Empty A Raw Water Strainer Again

I hope this question hasn't been answered already, I've searched the old posts. I have a single Lugger diesel that is keel cooled and I have wet exhaust so a raw water pump as well, only for the elbow. Can I have only one thru hull and strainer (2" dia.) to feed the main engine as well as the...

    Pilothouse Windows

Unfortunately, the new windows from Bomon still sit on the floor of my shop. They and the Newfound Metal portlights patiently await spring. It's been a brutal winter here in Mass. The boat is covered in snow and snow banks are piled up around it. Bomon did an exceptional job fabricating the...

    Bristol trawler

Counter poise, I am getting there. The tanks are in and I'm working on the engine beds now. Hope to install the engine next week. The sending units are all mounted and the panels and wiring harness are being connected so almost there. Ordered the keel cooler today and the gear oil cooler from...

    Pilothouse Windows

Hi josh. I received the windows from Bomon in Canada but I haven't installed them yet as I am concentrating on the engine room before it gets cold out. The windows that Bomon did for me are awesome and I am so glad I chose them. First rate quality. They're doing my pilot house doors as well. I...

    How much anchor chain?

I love this thread... I have a Lofrans Project 1500 24v windlass with a gypsy that handles 3/8" chain and 3/4" nylon. It also has a warping capstan on top. I own a 60 lb. CQR anchor and have a HUGE anchor locker, so all chain? 300' to 400' ? I am sure I should get a Danforth too....what...

    Radar/Lightning

I see St. Elmos fire lots of times over the last 33 years in the air. Almost always in heavy precip, in IFR conditions. Its just a build up of static electrcity. Been hit by lightning several times, from mild to severe damage, but not to the occupants as we were in William Faraday's "cage". My...

    Wing Engine

Wesmar Co. ( I think?) makes a hydraulic system that attaches to the main prop shaft and it's powered by the pto from a 12 KW or larger generator. About 20 grand I recall; less than the price of a small 27 hp diesel and installation and strut and folding prop, etc.

    Too much roll

Thanks so much Larry. And to everyone who answered. Yes I am going to build a set this year. The tanks are going in and then the engine and I want to build the outriggers while the engine room is still wide open. My friends all say wait till she's in the water see how she rides. One doesn't...

    Too much roll

Hi Larry. Could you snap a couple photos of the attachment points of your poles and cable ends where they attach to your hull? The outrigger poles, are they attached to the hull with backing plates and is the location of the attachment point above the deck through your bulwarks or below deck...

Transporting a 45' CHB- CA to RI

Ch, hello. I shipped my 42' Bristol up to Massachusetts from st. Augustine FL by truck. I had to remove the fly bridge even on a lowboy trailer. It cost 7000 plus 800 for permits and took 4 days. No damage and all in all not a bad experience. However, if you have NOT bought the boat yet and it...

    Horsepower versus Displacement

Wow! It took me a half hour to read this whole thread....very spirited to say the least. My Bristol is 42' and Net tons 35000. I have a Lugger 6414T completely rebuilt; its ratings are 120hp continuous to 170hp max. Did I get the right engine? The one the factory installed was a Cummins 160. I'm...

    Bristol trawler

David, how much roll does she have and is it slow rolling or snappy? What is the duration of the roll? Would you recommend para-vanes or stabilizers? I am swayed towards para-vanes like on the Kadey Krogens. Thanks, Steve
