    N46 without Stabilizers

Not really! That's the beauty of the of the active fin systems. They work only when they have to. If it takes very little to roll the boat, it takes very little to prevent the roll. Usually the response of an active system is controlled by GAIN setting and the respond will be proportional to...

    N46 without Stabilizers

OK! here goes my controversial posting that might shock some: Simple hydrodynamics lesson: to be stable, floating object waterline need to stay parallel to the water. With other words - rolly boat is trying to stay parallel to the water when even slightest wave passes underneath the boat. The...

    N46 without Stabilizers

I have KeyPower active fin stabilization from Vancouver Canada. They were recently acquired by Kobelt Manufacturing. My control unit has an input that will center the stabilizer (put them in PARK position) immediatly after the transmission shift lever is placed in neutral. that kind of prevents...

Crossing the Pacific on 47' 1972 power vessel

Of course I would prefer to use the wing engine, but if the repair involves something in the drive train (remember? - single propeller), then I might have to deploy sea anchor. Sea anchor is also very helpful if all hell breaks loose... Then apparently the best option is to deploy the sea...

Crossing the Pacific on 47' 1972 power vessel

The SeaWitch had a single engine arrangement with CAT C333D (3306) engine. It came from the factory equipped with 5 integral fiberglass tanks. 2X500 US gal diesel port and starboard in the engine room, 2X210 US gal water in the lazarette and 1X470 US gal water under the floor forward. I did...

Crossing the Pacific on 47' 1972 power vessel

Do budget time for the Marquesses. I spent only week or so there as my friend was flying back from Tahiti and something came up so he needed to get there fast. He ended up flying back from Fakarava to Tahiti. Do not miss the Tuamotu Archipelago! I spend 5 weeks there, and I could've easy spend...

Crossing the Pacific on 47' 1972 power vessel

Crew consisted of myself and a friend who fished most of the time. It was practically single handed crossing with one more onboard. I did all night shifts. Good to have an extra person on board. Comes handy if something breaks

Crossing the Pacific on 47' 1972 power vessel

Hello fellow boaters, Just quick info post here: MV SeaWitch is currently in Tahiti after successful crossing the Pacific from Mexico the the Marquesas Island, then to Tuamotu Archipelagos and then Papeete. The crossing speed was averaging about 6.5Knts over 2,700NM to Nuku Hiva. it took little...

    Bought our first trawler

Your guess is not agreeing with recommendations of some marine transmission manufacturers: Ie - (From “Velvet-Drive”: It has been determined by tests and practical experience that all Velvet Drive marine transmissions call be free-wheeled without risking damage in sailing or trolling...

    Bought our first trawler

If it's attached to the transmission then it's better than what I thought I saw initially. The bottom line is the less side load on the shaft, the better. Obviously if the driving sprocket is attached to the transmission, then portion of the side load is handled by the transmission's output...

    Bought our first trawler

It is common to fill up transmission with oil to run the get home drive. The oil covers the clutches and takes heat away from them so they don't burn if they are being driven without oil pump providing oil for their lubrication. Unfortunately I see other serious problem in the design of his...

    Fuel Right treatment

I have tried it. I don't want to give you the wrong information as I don't have quantitative results to show. I believe it works better than others. I will continue to use it, and hopefully my tanks stay clear. BTW my filters right out of the tanks are 2 microns and I have not changed them...

Dinghy Cradle - Who Uses Them

Hi Bill So you went ahead and bought the Californian ehhh? on the Seawitch I use these:Weaver Industries, Inc.: Chocks The beauty of these is that they slide out and leave only low profile catches on your deck. So there is nothing on the way half drunk sailors to trip on... Good luck and welcome...

    Interesting boats

Manyboats, that was the way I envisioned it should be done when I thought "I know better". It was my own mock-up.. that I decided not to execute on it after weighting the pros and cons.

    Interesting boats

Efficient does NOT go in one sentence with two engines :). Piece of mind, redundancy, etc does, but ignore that comment as I don't want to open that can of worms for N-time. I would hate to dock a boat that has no prop wash over the rudder. even with twin. Rudder with proper "wing" section...

    Interesting boats

I kind of agree with your statement that it will be more rugged and stronger.... Respectfully I disagree with the rest. The amount of fuel is not that negligent. Jeff Gerr's book explains that. But again, that's my personal opinion, and I don't feel like arguing about it is going to bring the...

    Interesting boats

Keith, The fins are 6 sq feet each. The slower the cruising speed is, the larger control surface boat needs for proper stabilization. Dont forget that the proper active fin stabilization system is preventing the boat from rolling, rather than trying to recover it. So it kind of stops the boat...

    Interesting boats

Eric, Agree with the free hanging rudder statement for the PNW. Considering that this is a ocean crossing trawler, it's all about officiency. That's where free hanging rudder is better. I worried about that design in the beginning, but then I noticed that there is close to 10" lower hang on the...

    Interesting boats

You are correct, for coastal cruising I find myself operating mostly from the command bridge. Great down south, and summer time in PNW. for offshore cruising the view from the lower helm is absolutely sufficient.
