    House Battery Bank Switch

A friend and neighbor lost his boat several years ago when his alternator shorted out. His wiring had the alternator wired directly to the battery as is being suggested here. He could put the fire out, but it would immediately restart as the entire house bank was being dumped into the shorted...

    Clear screen

Well, I'll jump in where angels fear to tread - If it were my boat and I didn't know anything about the unit's innards (and I don't), I'd start be taking those two screws out of the back and gingerly loosening the motor. That might reveal the next step, and if not it can probably be reassembled...

    The Salmon Troller WHITE CLOUD

There's always the romance of an old-timey vessel that pull the heart strings. This hull surely does that. Two issues, tho: first the steel house is a lot of weight (not talking about appearance) up high on a rather narrow hull. I bet she's a roller. Adding to that, the double-enders of that era...

Outlaw: The reference I sent is lifetime PNW resident, so probably not the same person. Oh, well, worth a try.

The danger here is that if an alternator diode shorts out, you have no way to disconnect the alternator from the battery. A friend lost his boat from this the other year. He could put the resulting fire out, but it kept reigniting beacuse the battery was dumping itself into the shorted...

    Avatar???

Well, I finally got it. But it would not upload a pic of 513 KB. I downsized to less than 40 KB and it finally was accepted. I still think the instrs say that larger files are ok and will be resized, but it doesn't seem to happen that way. -- Edited by PeterMcc at 21:25, 2009-01-26

    PMM Cheerleader

I'm mostly a lurker, but if I wanted Steve D's "wisdom" I'd buy the mag. OTOH, the cheerleader doesn't take up very much space. I guess it's a judgment call, but I guess I'm negative about him/her.

    Avatar???

So as a newbie, I'd like to upload a picture to be my avatar. I follow the directions in the avatar post above and ... 1. The little go-roundy thing does its go-roundy thing for a while and then I get a blank screen with no pic. this is repeatable. 2. If I then go back to the "select avatar"...

    Introduction

Members - I realize I've kinda parachuted in here a couple of times and I think an introduction might be a good idea. I've been lurking here for maybe six months - but I've followed, and been an occasional contributor to the Trawlers & Trawlering list since around 2000. I'm Peter McCorison...

    How much power is enough?

Coho's fifty-year-old manual for her Cummins HN6 main engine specifies all service intervals in gallons of fuel consumed. Does Cummins still do that?
