    MS 390 Vibration

I have seen where three blades can cause less vibration than 4 blades of the same size. This was due to effect of the blades going by the strut and the theory was that because the 4 bladed prop had two blades passing the strut at the same time it caused increased vibration over only one blade...

    Mainship Engine Room/Bilge Lights

I replaced my older fluorescent fixtures in the engine room with these and couldn't be happier. They aren't that much more cost than the LED bulbs. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VXSV669/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

Welcome! We look forward to seeing pictures of your boat and progress on the upgrades.

DIY rebuilding of diesel engine Yanmar 6LY

Seems to me you did the hard part already. If liners and rings are less expensive than pistons and boring and the pistons are good, by all means go that route. Seems you are off to a good start and imagine all you will learn from this project. That is a low hours engine so hopefully there...

DIY rebuilding of diesel engine Yanmar 6LY

I assume there are oversized pistons available? If so, just get the liners bored oversized once you get the new pistons by a good machine shop. Send the head along too and have them service the valves. Check all bearings with Plastigage and if worn, replace after having the crank inspected...

    Surveyor’s Tale & Boatyard Etiquette

Back in the 80's I worked during college at a watersports facility in Mission Bay that taught sailing among other things. We had one of the instructors named Clint who was a bit of a bohemian type and didn't believe in wearing underwear. Mind you, this was the era of Dolphin shorts to put this...

    Orcas sink yacht

I think they munched a trawler or two IIRC so don't feel so safe.

    shopping for light weight dinghy

Wow, I really like that Aspen dingy. I wonder if they are planning a console model in the future? It's surprising the 10' model maxes out at 9.9hp (and that's all it needs). This would be a great solution for us. This could be on the short list to replace our old Aquapro dingy.

Swift Trawler 44 - Forward fuel tank leaking diesel

This thread is 78 pages and spoiler alert: OP doesn't disclose what was the cause of the leak.... Probably has an agreement with Beneteau.

MS 390 - Add fresh water flush to raw water intake

Couple of things to consider with this which was discussed in another thread. I added fresh water flushing a couple years ago and did the open seacock method for a year. I found that even with good water pressure I still had significant salinity in the water when sampled. Also, I was...

    Head chemicals

I just installed a DIY version of the Sweetank and can confirm Dave's claim how well it works. We have a Vaccuflush system and during the summer the stench during a flush was horrendous. Now there is no smell at all, no chemicals either. I tried Nofex but it didn't seem to do much. O2 is the...

    Block Heater Recommendation

On my Cummins engines I have Wolverines installed on the sides of the oil pan. Since the oil pan is aluminum it conducts the heat well, they don't have to be on the bottom. I've added a thermal controller I purchased off Amazon with a thermocouple mounted to the block on one engine. That way...

    Ready for a new refrigerator

We replaced an older Isotherm unit with the Vitrifrigo unit on our old boat and were very happy. The Vitrifrigo was very quiet and had a low power draw. The failure on the Isotherm unit was the 120/12V switching electronics, seems to be a weak area of that design. Our new boat has a 12V only...

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you own a very nice boat, just curious why you are looking to move to a trawler?

    Today: Independence Day in Mexico!

The speeds of the trophy trucks running the desert and the sophistication of the suspension is amazing. The tires are only in contact with the ground about 20% of the time in the rough stuff at over 100mph. Fun to watch!

    Single Handing Alaska to Mexico

There is a pile of fish on the line between the East end of Catalina and San Diego in a warm streak of water between San Clemente and Oceanside. Easy to limit out on Dorado trolling feathers. If you decide on fueling up in San Diego I suggest Pearson's on Shelter Island for the best price...

    Consumer Checking In

Do you have experience with a twin screw boat? That boat has a lot of windage but with twin screws if you are experiences with them should be no problem. Since it's an aft cabin with no cockpit ingress and egress from the dock can be a challenge, and depending on your disability might make...

    What about BandB ??

Just curious if any TF members physically met either of them? Not asking for specifics or private information, just if someone ran into them at some point. I had some interactions via PM with Brett which were quite interesting. I do miss them posting, they added some great insight into...

    New cars; ho hum

As you can see from the picture of mine above I dumped the Stromburg carbs for Euro spec Dellortos and also modified the cams. It woke the car up a bit but still it was slow by todays standards.

    Fuel

In San Diego we are seeing some relief. It was around $6/gal for diesel at the peak and yesterday a friend fueled up for $4.77 plus tax which is a big help. I'm planning a trip to Catalina at the end of the month and am putting off fueling till the last minute....

    Problem in the Swinomish Channel

Only the newer Garmin systems can run the latest Navionics charts. They have to have the higher resolution screens on them. That's why I run Navionics on a tablet.

    Rudder Appendage

Thank you Grumpyfng, Cosmopete and OCEANA for your report of the Eagle 40. We aren't quite ready to pull the trigger on a boat/life change and swap coasts for the Great Loop but this boat will be on our radar when we do. It seems to check a lot of the boxes for a couple doing coastal cruising...

    Rudder Appendage

Thanks for the info. Seems like a pretty aggressive design, I would think an articulating version would be far superior.
