    2023 San Diego Meetup

Hello fellow Trawler Forum members. It appears to me there are a number of San Diego or SoCal folks on the forum. Is there any interest in getting a raft up event together in the spring? We used to do this with the Shamrock fleet a few years ago and it was quite a hit. Suggesting a happy...

    Southwestern yacht club

We looked into Southwestern at the beginning of Covid and considered it strongly, they even were running discounted memberships. They have limited slips in our size (36') and said it would be 2-3 years, expect it to be longer now. No individual slips, all doubles and they are on the narrow...

    Any 'Safe Harbor' members here?

We are at a Safe Harbor in San Diego. I'm pretty happy with them, they do a good job running the place and have done quite a few upgrades. Last year they remodeled the area around the building and deli. They added seating by the weir and a couple fire pits which don't seem to get much use...

Electric tug under design and to be built

I understand there is development of an electric ferry which runs from Anacortes to Gumes island. Haven't checked on it lately but did look into the program a year ago. Lot's of infrastructure required at the Anacortes end and it didn't seem cost effective, but they were going to give it a go.

1991 Californian 52 CPMY, lying in La Paz, BCS

Looks like a nice boat but I think you will have more interest with a complete set of pictures in the listing. GLWS.

    Wooden Boat Craftsmen

I've been following Sampson since pretty much the beginning, back when Leo wasn't too busy to email you back. When he started I thought he was crazy taking on a project like that, but I never doubted he would finish it. I've learned so much from the series, especially how difficult it is to...

    Toroidal Prop

As I understand the design, the efficiency isn't likely to translate to slower moving props like ours.

    Diesel price

So how is this not simply profiteering?

Hans Christian Independence 45? Any input?

It would be interesting to hear the story behind this boat. Ad says PO spent 3 years looking for the boat to satisfy his wife, then it appears installed the new Cummins engine a few years ago. However, the new engine only has 62 hours on it, so very little use in that time. Guess the wife...

    Defender Industries has been aquired

You need to have a business license to set one up generally SCR. I have a friend with an account there and use his discount, it's very substantial and often the price is lower than any online prices. Rack rate prices are very high, but most seem to get some sort of discount by simply asking...

    Aquaalarm exhaust temperature alarm

That looks like a great unit, thanks for posting. I was planning on putting in an alarm and perhaps making my one with an Arduino, but this would save me a lot of hassle (although not as much fun).

    Unicorn Boat?

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss FB models if they have a lower helm. I fish my boat which has a lower helm and cockpit controls by myself at times and never go up top. Cockpit controls are somewhat rare but you see them on some sporties like Bertram, etc. The FB gives far more usability to...

    Clean Marinas

Makes me wonder if I should lobby my Safe Harbor marina management team to divert a few of the upgrade $$$ to adding one or more of these. We seem to have a pretty bad trash problem in our marina since it's at the end of a downwind leg of water. They have some dumpster device but it either...

    What is this!? Ep. 1

I have seen where there is a crack or void around the shaft log, water got in and during a haul out a slow trickle of water came out. The void must have led to a pocket between the main hull lamination and the shaft log tube. Not sure if this was on a cored hull but if the crack leads to a...

How to find a commercial vessel selling price

Seems like the fare was pretty steep at $120-240 for such a short trip, no wonder it failed.

Wet exhaust fittings sealant or not

Crush rings are a must on FG tubes located close to the exhaust riser where the gasses are still hot. Down the line they aren't needed IMO unless you are overzealous on clamping force. No on sealant. I have resurfaced rough FG tubes before attaching the hose to get a better seal by coating...

    Pex vs. Sharkbite

I had done some replacement in our home of the old copper price with PEX and used a couple of the Sharkbite connectors in the attic area. After about 5-6 years one of the fittings sprung a leak at the o-ring and caused some minor damage. I replaced with the stainless ring crimp type...

    New Electric Outboard Announced

It's interesting to see how the Mercury marketing spins the product. The motor is equivalent to a 3.5hp IC engine and the battery is 16 lbs. They compare that to a 5 gallon gas can at 32 lbs but I seriously doubt this setup will get the range of a 3.5hp with 5 gallons of gas. I guess if you...

To upgrade or not to upgrade ?

I recall a 55 being listed a couple years ago with some flood damage or partial sinking listed in the ad. It was being sold at a substantial discount. IIRC it was in FL though not in Europe but perhaps this is the same boat? It seems strange someone would do this much modification to the...

Opinions on Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40

For my Cummins engines in the boat and the Duramax in my truck I take a trip to Wally World and see what is the cheapest of the name brand 15W-40 oils and that's what goes in. Simple as that. This time it was Delvac 1300. For seme reason there is always a significantly less expensive brand...

    3D Printing

That can be machined from a sheet of Starboard as long as you don't want it painted. If you want to paint it, it can be machined from ABS sheet. Most plastic shops with a CNC router can do it but I've had some nice Starboard pieces done by Boat Outfitters in FL and they were good to deal with...

    Bulk diesel delivery PNW?

Have you tried Pearson's? I bought 200 gallons there a month ago and paid $5.12 plus tax. Bet it's $4.50 or better now after the recent drop. You need to haggle a bit and make friends with the dockhands for the best price.....

Tip amounts for dock line handlers and fuel dock attendance?

The fuel dock I frequent is a bit different. They have the best fuel prices, but you get a significant discount if they like you, I'm talking 30-50 cents a gallon off. And the guys who tie you up and pump the fuel also follow you in and write you up, so I tip them $20 and it pays off in...

    How good is Prop Speed

I used the Rustoleum spray galvanized coating on my props and rudders and it worked pretty well here in SoCal for the past year and a half. I also did my trim tabs with it which I will probably do with AF next time. You need to put on several full coats, I think I did 3-4. Pretty cheap way to...
