Engines for my 42' Hatteras LRC

Muriel, no, you do not have to change the propeller on the currently counter-rotating engine. When you replace that engine with a "normally-rotating" one you need to invert the way you connect the control cable so the gear box runs in reverse when you want to go forward and vice-versa. So...

Engines for my 42' Hatteras LRC

Muriel, I believe the 72C model, like my old 73C, cannot be used in reverse for extended periods of time. My new Twin Disc Technodrive 170 boxes have 3:1 reductions. As mentioned before, given the low cost of the gear boxes, now is a great time to get a new set. If you keep the old BWs and...

Engines for my 42' Hatteras LRC

Muriel, which model of Borg Warner are your transmissions? I changed my engines this summer and had to replace the transmissions (Warner Gear AS5-73CR) as they could not be run in reverse for extended periods of time. In any case, I am glad I did as the cost of the gear boxes is not that high...

New anti siphon install in wet exhaust?

Kyle, that's a lot of water coming from somewhere. I am surprised you are not able to see it coming in. Have you looked at the shaft logs drip rates while underway? The lift mufflers seem to be plastic or fibreglass. Is there a component in the wet exhaust system that is metal, could have...

MS 390 - Add fresh water flush to raw water intake

Here is an Seaboard Marine video on fresh water flushing (you can skip the first 2 minutes): https://www.sbmar.com/video-gallery-how-to/ They recommend leaving the sea-cock open throughout.

    Sheer line, maybe?

    Paravanes

Pascal, thank-you for sharing, particularly the dimensions. It looks similar to other plywood paravanes I have seen here in TF but maybe a bit lighter and more streamlined. Keep us posted!

    Paravanes

Of course! Having seen your work I suspected as much. Could you tell us more about them? Your own design? Materials? dimensions?

    Paravanes

Nice work Pascall! Where did you get the paravanes? I haven’t seen them in Europe.

    Emergency Boarding Ladder

In my 1979 GB 42 Classic there was no latch. When up, the ladder stayed up, leaning forward towards the transom. I would occasionally tie in place in the upright position with a cord or elastic but it was not really necessary.

    Flopper stoppers

Based on my experience using a boom is essential. I tried my two 35cm x 100cm stabilisers directly on the gunnel and they didn't do much. I now use two 6 metre booms. The booms multiply the vertical motion of the stabilisers by a factor of more than 3X, in my case, giving them more time to...

Need advise on engine removal from Mainship 430

I have done in but in a different boat. We used a hydraulic boom crane with the boat in the water. We attached chain-hoists to the end of the boom and avoided A-frames, etc. Our door was not centered either and, furthermore, we had two engine to drop-in, one on each side. But with the boat...

    Interlux Perfection Accelerator/Curing Agent Alternative

Awlgrip is a sister company to Interlux. Both are owned by AkzoNobel. I know they share some additives as my local International (Interlux's brand-name outside the US) distributor told me to use Awlgrip's flattening agent on Perfection Pro. And this site suggests AwlGrip's Pro-Cure X98 or...

    Paravane stabilisers actual loads.

At which point on the rig? In the diagram in post #5 he suggests 3,900 pounds downward force by the paravane. Much more at other points.

    Paravane stabilisers actual loads.

Based on the Jenny's Journey experience (post #10) the paravane pulls with a force of more than 1750 pounds. And based on Rob's rig (post 14), 5/8 nylon three-strand (breaking strength ~10,000 pounds) is strong enough. So the range seems to be between 1 and 5 tons, I would guess closer to...

    Winter Boat Cover

Haven't used them but these people have been around for a while and enjoy a good reputation. They have done many GBs and should be able to make the covers without coming down to measure: Lohmann Sails & Covers https://www.boatcovers.ca/gallery I believe they the fabric they prefer is...

Anchor chain piling up blocking winch

I drilled a 1" hole in the panel separating the chain locker from the forward cabin, right below the tube in which the chain descends. When the pyramid forms and the chain stops descending I push a broom stick through the drilled hole and push the pyramid so it topples over. Not perfect but...

    GenSet Replacement

I replaced my ancient Onan with 2 kW of solar panels and two 100A externally regulated alternators. I had removed three AC units and installed 10 Caframo fans. Replaced electric cooker with a propane one. I couldn't be happier! For the OP, now is a good time to consider solar.

    engine won't turn over

Well, if the starter spins freely then the Bendix is clearly not engaging the flywheel for some reason. Lubrication of the Bendix tends to fix this problem but if it worked correctly during your bench test then it could be the "sloppines" you detected.

    50A alternator to 60A dc2dc charger

Would it not make more sense to charge the house batteries directly off the alternator and use the DC2DC charger to charge the start battery from the house batteries? Start batteries normally just need a trickle charge whereas the house batteries can usually take all the Amps alternator can...
