    Noob question about twin engine

not only prop walk In twins, in addition to prop-walk (sideways thrust at the stern as a result of the downward angle of the props axis) I would think there is also a force at play given the props are off-centre. So, when the starboard engine is engaged, the off-centre thrust of the starboard...

    Noob question about twin engine

counter rotating diesels In my older boat, while a not a gasser but a diesel (GM Toro-Flo), the engines are counter-rotating and the Velvet Drives transmissions (Warner Gear AS5-73C) reverse the rotation of the engines. So, starboard engine turns left (when looking from the stern) and port...

Boat names that just have to be shared.

Wet Dream I am just glad I don’t see as many boats named “Wet Dream” as I used to.

    Identifying a bad battery

Even with a weak battery, I would have thought the windlass would work when the engine is running. Could the alternator that charges it not be working? Have checked to see if the windlass has a fuse or breaker that has tripped?

    Shower Box pump

Here is my 2 bits: For the voltage to be lower at the "live leads" than at the battery, undersize wires or loose terminals are not enough. I think there must be something else on the same circuit drawing power. Try shutting everything off and see if the voltage goes up at the live leads to...

Is an airless sprayer worth it?

International (Interlux in the US) has recently come out with a new two-part PU paint which they name "Perfection Pro". This is an evolution of their earlier "Perfection Plus". Unlike Perfection Plus, Perfection Pro is meant to be rolled and/or brushed-on rather than spayed-on. I have tried...

Anchoring a Grand Banks Europe 52

Interestingly, the Spade is not that new. I suspect it may have well been the first (and I believe the best as well) of the "new-style anchors". I don't know the history but I first read about it in the excellent "The Complete Book of Anchoring and Mooring", published in 1994. If I recall...

    Which one is house batt

Do you have a fridge? Where that does connect to? What about lights and instruments. Maybe there is a house bank somewhere that you haven't discovered . I would disconnect batteries and see what stops working.

    Which one is house batt

I suspect you will need to redesign your battery set-up and when you do that you will probably find use for the deep cycle batteries. You should read through the archives here as there has been a lot of discussions on ho to do this. You should also invest a couple of hours on this website...

Anchoring a Grand Banks Europe 52

My prior boat, a GB42, came with a CQR which I hated. It was hard to set and I had no confidence it would re-set in a wind shift in the middle of the night. I also replaced it with a Delta which set quickly and easily. For my current GB50 I bought a 40kg Rocna which has been reliable. But...

New refrigerator, time for a new battery charger - advice?

The more ventilation the less power it will draw. If you can increase ventilation with vents at the back or the top of the cabinet it would help.

    Which one is house batt

It could be any of the three. You have to follow the wires to see which one leads to the 12V panel. Or you can disconnect them one at a time to see which one feeds the house. In my boat I have four battery banks: one for each engine, one for the generator and one for the house. For the...

Onan 9kw starts and then quits

I am surprised after only 30 seconds of running there is a temperature issue. I would suspect something else. Have you checked the fuel filters? no restrictions on the fuel lines?

New refrigerator, time for a new battery charger - advice?

I think what you need is an inverter so you have AC for the fridge when you don't have shore power or the generator running. You need to see what the maximum watts the fridge requires, plus any other AC loads you may want to have, and size the inverter to that. For little extra cost over that...

Anchoring a Grand Banks Europe 52

Ditch the CQR (old fashion design, drags) and get a Spade (tried and tested and one of Panope's Steve favourites).

Grand Banks 46, bow heavy or stern light - or something else?

You are talking about where the bottom paint is rather than the boot stripe. I assume there is a boot strip and below that is where the bottom paint begins. If the bottom of the boot stripe is 1.5" above the water at the front and 5" to 6" in the back but 2" below the water in the middle the...

    Dinghy Davit rigging

No, I believe that normally the up-and-down is done by a pulley system at the end of the boom, not by raising-and-lowering the boom itself when under load. At least that is the way it is my current GB50 and a prior GB42. But then, you have 5:1 advantage while mine has been 2:1 for raising the...

How heavy is the dinghy you want to raise? Depending on that you will need a more or less robust solution.

    Attaching sanitation hose

Den, just to be clear, between the hose and the fittings you do not need any sealant. Hose clamp is enough. Between the tank fitting and the tank I would think a rubber gasket would be better than sealant.

    Attaching sanitation hose

If you mean the seal between the fitting and the hull then yes. I would use butyl or Sikaflex 291.

    Deck Hose

The bow is the traditional place, near the anchor pulpit. In my boat there is space between the inner wall of the forward cabin and the hull. You need to see what access you have to that space to run the hose up and install the valve on the deck. You can't see mine in the photograph but it is...

    Lehman 120 Exhaust Elbow

Stainless can be treacherous due to crevice corrosion which happens in corrosive environments with little oxygen. The photo below is a shaft key from a Groco Model K manual head. It has spent many years submerged in an oxygen-free, corrosive  environment and corroded significantly. The...

    Danfoss grey knob identification help

Well the PO really went to a lot of effort to re-establish a system to wash his windshield! I don't think I have ever used the windshield washer in 20 years of boating in Grand Banks. In fact I haven't used the wipers that much and, currently, I don't even have the wiper blades installed! I...
