    Unicorn Boat?

I don’t know about the relative quality of the fuel in Bahia Tortugas but I’ve read that you have to either schlep it from the gas station or pay through the nose for the locals to bring it out to you. No thanks. https://www.sveione.com/single-post/2019/02/27/bahia-tortugas Apart from that, I...

    Unicorn Boat?

That’s an intriguing boat. Ironically they don’t seem to sell Alaska boats in the Pacific Northwest. There’s one for sale in Vancouver but not the aft cabin. Rest are all down under.

    Unicorn Boat?

I don’t buy fuel from pangas or Canadians. It’s a hard rule. :) The North Pacific 49E is looking pretty unicorn like at the moment. Now I just need to find two million bucks!

    Unicorn Boat?

I’ve been aboard the American Tug 485 on a few occasions. It would be my boat if it had three sleeping cabins.

Starlink RV is now Starlink Roam

I went around in circles with their support person trying to get them to tell me what “land-based” means and I expect they would be just as cagey about their notion of “inland waters.” I suspect the only way to find out will be to use it at the dock or at anchor and see what works.

Starlink RV is now Starlink Roam

No, I haven’t been in any of those “holes” in the last 60 days. I’m pretty confident they flagged me for this due to my exchange with customer support where I said I’d been using it on the water near land and wanted to know if that was included in their definition of “land-based service.”...

Starlink RV is now Starlink Roam

I’ve only been in Puget Sound within the land-based coverage cells. I’m not sure if they are tracking use on the water in coastal areas or if this is a result of my having raised a stink with their customer service rep about what their plans mean (or meant—see earlier in this thread)...

Starlink RV is now Starlink Roam

From Starlink today: Over the past 60 days, your Starlink has been used in areas that violate the terms and conditions of your service plan: your plan does not include service on the ocean. Starting as early as May 9th, 2023, you will be unable to connect to the internet on the ocean except to...

49E is available with three cabin layout. Checks all the boxes!

    Unicorn Boat?

I had in mind Bellingham to Ketchikan and Ensenada to Los Cabos with ample reserve. My current NT37 will do 1200 but I could make do with 1000 to check all the other boxes.

    Unicorn Boat?

She liked the Fleming 55. Lots of $$ and again over powered for my taste and just a hair too long. But very nice boats. The process of looking is very fun, and it’s great to have a spouse who is just as interested if not fully aligned.

    Unicorn Boat?

Now that’s a great suggestion! I can do 52 LOA. She liked the 45 that was on display at the show but for the two sleeping cabins. Thanks!

Minimum would be 1200 nm at 7 knots. I’d prefer FD.

    Unicorn Boat?

I’ve always understood that it’s not good to run engines at such a low proportion of their rated capacity for long periods of time. But maybe that’s not as true for modern electronically controlled diesels. Regardless, I’d rather have a single or smaller twins and use the space for more fuel or...

    Unicorn Boat?

Our special kid doesn’t have a mobility impairment and as I noted we could go up to 54’ at our current club. And it’s definitely possible to to get three sleeping cabins and offshore capability and range into a package under that length. The problem is that those who choose to do it seem to go...

    Unicorn Boat?

Both the Beneteau 48 and the Greenline 48 come pretty close, but they are both overpowered semi-planing boats that lack the range to make it from Bellingham to Ketchikan or from Ensenada to Los Cabos without refueling. The interior fit and finish on both also leaves something to be desired. The...

    Unicorn Boat?

Sadly there is no chance of getting a boat that checks my boxes but not hers. I’ve tried to sell her on the Selene 53 and the Krogen 52 but she thinks they are too dark and gloomy inside. A down salon like in many of the Beebe designs would be right out of the question.

    Unicorn Boat?

Looks like the Cherubini Independence 45s have two sleeping cabins, not three, so not our unicorn boat. I don’t think the analogy holds, at least for us. Our Nordic Tug 37 is perfect for this stage of our lives and we have no desire to swap it for another boat in the same class. We are looking...

    Unicorn Boat?

My wife and I had a lot of fun looking at boats we would never want to own at the the Boats Afloat Show on South Lake Union over the weekend. She wants bright and airy salon, three sleeping cabins, separate sitting and dining settees, and lots of exterior lounging space. I want seaworthiness...

Replace or eliminate the 2 burner electric stovetop?

We were leaning toward replacing our old Force 10 three-burner propane stove with an induction cooktop and recovering the unused oven space for storage to make up for what we will be losing by installing a small drawer dishwasher. But the 110v models are underwhelming, we are out of space on our...

    Quarantine, Trawler Style

My understanding is that the ICS meaning is that everyone on board is healthy AND the vessel requests a pratique, or clearance, from the port, at which point the flag comes down. Until it does, however, it indicates that the vessel is under quarantine. This is apparently the traditional meaning...

Starlink RV is now Starlink Roam

That’s the obviously true answer that I just couldn’t get the customer support rep I asked to give me straight up. I’m going to stick with standard roam for this summer in the inside passage. But it’s nice to have the option of switching to a prioritized data plan for $250/mo for cruising in...
