    Tenn Tom closed until May

    Refrigerator power consumption question

My Norcold uses about 100ah per day on average. More in hot weather.

    Heat pump combo washer/dryer

I bought a used Splendide ventless dryer assuming it was a heat pump model and it's not. It uses resistance heat and condenses the steam using cold water. They may still make both types. It's useless as a dryer, and consumes water on the dry cycle. I didn't install it on the boat.

No mobile app frustrations (I know it was turned off)

I do everything on my Android phone, and found the transition from the app unpleasant. I almost stopped visiting. But after some experimentation and patience the experience is OK now. Don't give up.

Charging batteries and 12 V system underway

It's very common. The expectation was that the alternators charge the start batteries and carry DC operating loads, which will generally be under 40 amps. Easy work. The generator handles the house loads. As long as you're willing to run the generator as needed it's a tried and true system.

Charging batteries and 12 V system underway

This has been discussed here, and I think the concensus is that there's no appreciable difference in fuel consumption between the two. Unless you're using an inverter under high loads or trying to recharge your house bank quickly the OEM alternators should keep up just fine. I'm not sure I...

    Heat pump combo washer/dryer

I've had a heat pump dryer made by LG in a rental unit for a few years. Ventless and 110v. It works pretty well and is very energy efficient. I'd love a heat pump combo unit for the boat. When I shopped for one a couple of years ago the only ones I found were made by Splendide. I think...

    Snow problems

There were several big marina roof collapses in Tennessee recently.

    Heavy Weather - GB42

Fully agree a modern AP steers better than people. It's the computer using a bunch of inputs to learn the best path through waves. A good AP will move the rudder less. It's not usually about pump size.

    Welland Canal

I've got an idea: go dock at the top of the canal in Port Colburn. There's lots of free slips, and a few decent restaurants steps away. Big ships sliding by. I quite like the place. There's a nice beach a few miles away that you can visit by boat. The next pleasure boat passage will draw...

84 months of costs to live/use the boat

Thanks Don. For me that's a more clear cut set of numbers. I've got a $2k/mo boat budget using a similar metric. I think it's realistic. I'd point out that this doesn't include the cost of having 6 figures tied up in the boat. That adds another $500/mo. But who's counting ?

    Welland Canal

Good choice. Why not take the Erie Canal from Buffalo?

    Welland Canal

They actually schedule dedicated pleasure boat passages. So you'll likely be in company with other yachts, and they designate one as the lead. There are 3-4 passages per week.

    Welland Canal

I've gone through the Welland both ways. I think they require three because there may be more turbulence in the lock chamber going up. The most difficult part of the process is keeping the boat parallel with the wall during the lift Staff drop two nylon lines down, and you are expected to...

    Newbie

Welcome. Check with marine insurers. They may help you with some parameters like age and size. For newbies getting insurance is often one of the biggest challenges.

Winter cold snap -14C this morning

I left Memphis yesterday, heading for the Gulf of Mexico. It looks like freezIng temperatures will catch up with me tonight and follow me all the way down. Glad I left when I did.

    Collision and demasting

I suspect that historically power has been a concern for sailors, so they are less likely to use radar routinely. And they typically travel at slower speeds than power boats, so perhaps the need is less generally.

New OR Members Planning Great Loop Adventure

I think that it's worth trying once. Many don't like it, some do. I'm a dedicated brown water cruiser. Many Loopers will say that the best parts are in the northern great lakes and the worst parts are the rivers. So if you get up to Georgian Bay from Florida you may as well keep going just...

New member from sail to power

Welcome, and good luck with the transition. If you've been looking you'll know that the market in Ontario for boats like this is pretty skinny. No affiliation, but this boat caught my eye tecently: https://www.harrisellis.com/boat/richardson-ns32-trawler/

    Collision and demasting

This is a sobering story. Glad you guys are OK. Have you heard from your insurance? Based on your damage assessment it wouldn't surprise me if the boat is a write off.

Over propped. Is it really a problem?

And that's why 95% of Tony's experience and advice really doesn't apply here. Maybe someone should ask what he thinks of overpropping a 6bt in a trawler and setting a max cruise of 300 rpm under max rpm. I've read enough of his advice to be able to accurately predict his response, but I don't...

    Exhaust gas temperature

That sounds like an exhaust temperature monitoring system rather than EGT. EGT gives temperatures before the water injection. The two measurements are completely different. EGT can reach 900F while exhaust temps are typically well under 200F.

Over propped. Is it really a problem?

You're right. I keep forget about modern high performance diesels with recreational ratings. In that case ther are likely many uncharted territories for the uninformed. But nobody has these engines in non-planing boats.

Over propped. Is it really a problem?

And closely related: If you accept that when right-propped it's within guidelines to operate at 80% capacity at the top end, how could you possibly object to running at 80% capacity at some other lower rpm/hp range? That's what a VP prop offers, and what may be achieved with overpropping.
  25. Jeff F

Over propped. Is it really a problem?

Given that in propulsion these engines are typically rated for continuous use at 80% of the maximum output at ~200 under max rpm (putting out a lot more power) I don't understand why you'd expect a lower lifespan. I'd put my money on the genset.
