    Abaco's Trip

I went through Don't Rock Passage a few months ago in my 4' draft boat rather than out around Whale Cay. Had 6-7' of water all the way through. It might be possible to avoid it. That said, I've gone through lots of similar cuts. In an onshore breeze you want to go through when the tide is...

Will Prowse testing drop in Lifepo4 over current protection. Quite surprising.

I thought I had it covered. Then one day I shorted out the + terminal on the alternator with a wrench. As far as I can tell both batteries disconnected briefly as designed, then came back to life shortly after.

    LFP batteries

I have a couple of LI Time 300a batteries. If (when?) the internal BMS fails my plan is to cut open the battery and use the cells with an alternative protection. I don't see a BMS failure as necessarily being the end of the line for the battery.

    Suggestions on DC2DC charger setup.

WRT blowing the 30a fuse - the chargers are typically rated at output voltage, which can be several volts higher than the input source. It's not unusual to exceed 30a input for a 30a output charger I had this issue and switched from 30a to 40a breakers for the chargers. Problem solved.

Ranger Tugs 43 real world range

I think one major upside for the designers is getting the engines in the stern of the boat rather than the middle. I've never seen the 43, but I'm sure they've made good use of that extra space.

Onan MDKAF dies when start button is released

I got the sense that was immediately after a shutdown. That would be consistent with an overheat. Good discussion.

Liquor on boat going in and out of Canada

The allowance isn't any different for a boat vs a car. Excess is dutiable at the agent's discretion. If you're not aware, there is a strike on at the LCBO in Ontario that may last a while. Beer and to a lesser extent wine is available, but spirits may be hard to get while the strike is on.

    refrigeration

I had my Norcold 0061 stop working on DC. I ran it on AC for a year or so before it stopped working completely. I then replaced the control module and it's been working perfectly on DC and AC ever since. Don't rule out a bad controller. As an aside, I'm not convinced that there is a big...

    Deal before survey?

Good list. As always I think to a certain extent it depends on the size of the boat and the deal. I've bought and sold lots of boats on the car model, but they've been broadly in the car price range. I'd also point out that on a remote deal, it may be advantageous to engage a surveyor to do...

    The Case for Going Slow

I should also add that in my opinion if you're traveling at 1.2 SL and are so obsessed with range that you need calibrated monitoring the obvious solution is to reduce speed by 10% to increase range by something like 30%. Same with trying to optimize prop and stuff like that. It's all playing...

    The Case for Going Slow

This is reported by the ECM, and I did two way tests in calm water. I don't have a ton of confidence in the absolute value of each reading, but the numbers also align pretty well with the prop demand curve supplied by the manufacturer. Obviously the values are going to vary by boat...

    The Case for Going Slow

I'd suggest a third option: 4nmpg at 6.5 knots. A lot of people think that displacement speeds at 1.3 SL is the sweet spot. That's only in comparison to faster speeds. I've built a chart for my boat (135 hp, 49' WLL) that illustrates the further efficiencies below hull speed. In my case MPG...

Help! Positioning of haul out straps for a Nordic Tug, 32 (1994)

Your boat has a long straight keel and protected running gear well aft. Speaking as someone who has placed straps on hundreds of different boats, that's about as straightforward as it comes. The straps can go just about anywhere My advice is not to sweat it. The lift operator will figure it...

Victron sine wave problem while charging

Agreed. I recently had some generator issues. They were fuel related in my case. When loaded up the generator would sometimes start to fluctuate slightly in speed and the voltage would start to get wobbly. The interesting part for me was watching the inverter handle the pass through from...

    AC in forward cabin

To me the ideal is having a dedicated through hull and raw water pump for each unit. There are arguments against this, but it is another option.

Kabola not heating rooms but heating water

I think you're on the right track. I can't speak to Kabola, but my ITR system has three different DC power sources, each with its own circuit breaker. One of them is for the fans. Since you're getting circulation in the heating loop I'd assume that the thermostat is working. In my system a...

    advice for new boater

Reach out to loopers. They all come down the river in the early autumn, and there are popular overnight stops close to you. The AGLCA has a public Facebook page that's an easy way to connect. Most are happy to share experiences and talk about their boats, and offering to help with groceries...

    Bow Thruster & Battery Question

Depending on the thruster and engine, the draw from the thruster could be double the starting load. My 95kgf 12v thruster draws ~600 amps, much more than a mid-size diesel starter. Expecting good performance with a long cable run to deep discharge house batteries is unrealistic IMO. The...

    advice for new boater

I think you could easily ramp launch this type of boat just about anywhere. Lots of people have looped on these boats - the RF246, Ranger Tugs and C-dory 25 are all popular choices for loopers, and there are others as well. These boats are fully capable of doing the trip, with the usual...

55 gallon drums as replacement fuel tanks?

Tanks of any size require baffling to prevent surging, which can exert enormous force on the tanks and mounts. An unmodified 55 gallon drum really isn't suitable. There's a reason marine fuel tanks cost as much as they do.

    Crosby 38 Tug data…?

Got pointers to the boats for sale? I saw one for sale a few years ago and chatted with the owner. It was a Benford design built in the NE, but I don't remember it being Crosby. He said there were only a few built. Very handsome boat IMO.

Heads up for the Rideau 2024 season

I didn't mean to imply that the impact is zero. I feel your pain. My point was that vessels with fixed air draft > 16' are relatively scarce here at the best of times, given the 5' draft constraint. You're in a small group. Getting back to the bridge, if I were imperial ruler I'd replace...
