37-foot motor sailor - Dutch Built in GRP

I like that style of boat. Coincidentally I think the boat referenced in this recent thread might be a sister ship. https://www.trawlerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68685

My John Deere decided to take some time off

That's never going to happen. You'll get the mandated data - DTCs, select operational data - but nothing more. As I've said here before, remote engine management solves for that. Open up internet comms and let the service person tell you what's going on. Word around my area is that there...

    Interesting boats

I just did a virtual tour of a Sabre ER. Wow. I can see the vulnerability. Maybe pods and sensible design don't go together... Sent from my moto g play (2021) using Trawler Forum mobile app

    Interesting boats

Sure, but it's entirely preventable with sensible design. Risk of sinking or losing both engines doesn't have to be any higher with pods IMO. It's not like exposed props and rudders in a conventional drive are invulnerable. Sent from my moto g play (2021) using Trawler Forum mobile app

    High Oil Pressure- Yanmar 6LYA-STP

I have nothing constructive to add, but recently ran across a sister ship with a brand new QSB7. Owner reported it quiet, smooth and expensive. Sent from my moto g play (2021) using Trawler Forum mobile app

    1981 Fairchild Scout 30

That looks like a very satisfying project. I'm generally not a fan of copper color, but think it looks great on your boat. Sent from my moto g play (2021) using Trawler Forum mobile app

    Interesting boats

I think I recall seeing something about flood partitioning for pod drives. Seems like a good idea to isolate flooding to a single engine. They're pretty impressive for high speed efficiency, dockside handling, and interior design. I can see a case for them for some folks, though probably not...

    Only 90V AC Shore power

Agreed. Just to add, if this isn't related to the IT, wouldn't loading it up with HVAC or other major loads cause further voltage drop and likely failure to operate? Sent from my moto g play (2021) using Trawler Forum mobile app

    Does lube oil go bad?

I don't know, but have always assumed most waste oil is used for something... Maybe burned for energy generation, or heat? Or as a feedstock for new materials. Where I live any garage will take my old oil. I suspect that the recyclers pay them to take it away and it has some downstream value...

My John Deere decided to take some time off

I should add that I replaced both my ECU and pump, and they were both around the same parts cost. Swapped the pump myself, paid JD dealer about $600 to swap the ECM. There should be rebuilt pumps ready to go at reasonable cost. I got one in two days. Sent from my moto g play (2021) using...

My John Deere decided to take some time off

I don't think anyone would be shocked at pump issues at 5000 hrs, whether electronically controlled or not. Ultimately the pump is doing high precision work that can be degraded by dirt or corrosion, or just wear and tear. Intermittent alarms seem to me to be consistent with some types of...

My John Deere decided to take some time off

The problem seems obvious to me. You have a failing high pressure control valve. That's what the computer is telling you. I haven't heard any evidence to suggest a failing ECM apart from temperature, which could well be within normal range. Sure, ECMs fail. The tech who replaced mine had...

    Marine Traffic Help

Satellite communication is not part of the AIS standard. Lots of vessels have both AIS and sat comms as two distinct systems. AIS is entirely VHF based. Satellites can listen in, just like land stations do. Sent from my moto g play (2021) using Trawler Forum mobile app

    Marine Traffic Help

Yep. Satellites pick up pretty much all of the vhf-based AIS signals. I think you can pay Marine Traffic to get satellite tracking for a specific boat. Sent from my moto g play (2021) using Trawler Forum mobile app

    Jubilee on the Triangle Loop

North to Prince Edward County then up the Trent-Severn. Was in the TI 6 weeks ago before doing the loop to Buffalo. I should have checked the weather more carefully before heading out. Flat calm on the lake but some nasty thunderstorms possible. So far nothing on my radar. Sent from my moto...

    Triangle Loop

The Clayton antique boat museum is well worth a visit IMO. Parks Canada maintains a couple of dozen islands, and with a mooring pass you can stay free. Nice docks and a couple of mooring fields. A seasonal mooring pass is well worth the money on this route. Sent from my moto g play (2021)...

My John Deere decided to take some time off

You should be able to call up fuel temperature at the pump through the dashboard display. I think that's a good proxy for IP temperature. But electronics can fail for reasons beyond out of bound temperatures. Also high fuel temperature causes a different DTC IIRC. I'd be inclined to trust...

My John Deere decided to take some time off

I'm not going to argue strongly either way. When I was dealing with a failing ECM last summer I noticed it getting warm, and I unmounted it from the motor and temporarily mounted it on a stringer a few inches away. It worked fine for a week or two before failing again. My symptoms were...

My John Deere decided to take some time off

When it quit the second time did you get the same DTC? And were your instruments like temperature working? If you want to fully understand the function of the ECM you need to understand the Standyne DE10 injection pump. The ECM controls the injection timing and duration. It's not a solenoid...

Vetus thruster on Helmsman 38/Saville 37

Glad you got it sorted. I went through all that with mine, then pulled the brushes expecting them to be shot, but they were fine. Blew all the dust out and put the brushes back in, and it now works fine. Gremlins! Sent from my moto g play (2021) using Trawler Forum mobile app

Vetus thruster on Helmsman 38/Saville 37

There is a short series of videos from Vetus Global that I was watching last night and I'd recommend. https://youtu.be/hvmwfCAHJ48 My 95kgf Vetus stopped working a couple of days ago and I've been working through the troubleshooting. If you have a helper I'd suggest you measure the voltage...
