I need some help and advice on Radar mast placement and radar operation

Just reread your post carefully. More comments. 1) I'm not sure why 2 has to be harder to wire than 1. Can't you cut an exit port in the pole to go to headliner? 2) don't discount aft line of sight for the radar. I often use mine as a rear view mirror of sorts. The Phantom has very...

I need some help and advice on Radar mast placement and radar operation

I have that radar, and went through a similar exercise with my Mainship 34. I'd say height is your friend in terms of overall performance. The rear mast opens possibilities for configuring a hoist. I'd go in that direction. Part of it is aesthetics too. Have you thought about how to lower...

    Custom Scale Model

I'm curious about 3d printing. No experience, but I stumbled across a print file - or whatever they're called - for a scale model of my boat recently. I have no idea how it's done, but I'm sure someone clever could work from original design plans to create a printed model. Sent from my moto...

    What size chartplotter display

I have a 9" Garmin. Bigger hasn't been in my budget, but supplemented with a 10" tablet running Navionics works out pretty well for me. I think for single screen views the 9" is fine. But the combos are a bit small for me. Lots of choice, as has been pointed out. Sent from my moto g...

    Swim Platform - MS 400

I walked by a 400 at the dock a few days ago, and I'm pretty sure it had an integrated platform like the boat for sale. Maybe there was a refresh in the design along the way? Sent from my moto g play (2021) using Trawler Forum mobile app

    Ford Industrial Engine Help

Beta Marine has a good range of small marine diesels. Something in the 60-90 HP range may be adequate, depending on your use case. Interesting boat. Tell us more. Sent from my moto g play (2021) using Trawler Forum mobile app

    Prop Size

You could bump it up to 2200 and cruise at 8 knots, assuming the motor and cooling system is good. No need to jump to prop changes. Sent from my moto g play (2021) using Trawler Forum mobile app

    Dingy davits

    Mobius XPM for sale

What would the cost be to change? I haven't followed the build closely, but didn't they send the engine back for service at some point? That implies a swap to a modern engine might be entirely feasible. Ditto on the stabilizers. It seems to me both can be changed at moderate cost relative...

    Tay Canal

That's the stress free way of doing it. Several nice restaurants in Perth. I've anchored overnight about half way up in the marshes. Lots of beavers and birds around there, and very quiet.

    Tay Canal

Depth is maintained by the locks there. I don't think that's a problem. I was last up there in 2020. Nice trip, but a little tight in places. At that time the same lock master had been there for many years. I can't remember his name, but he has a boat named Locknut. That's your best...

Inverter for when main engines are running

For emergency backup this seems like a simple cheap solution. I'd want to configure a plug to use the shore power cord to connect to the portable generator.

Canadians doing the Great Loop US Border/Homeland Security

Agreed. Does it work in the western sections? I lost the ability to check in via ROAM after I left Florida going up the rivers. Hope it's been enabled since I was through that section 18 months ago.

    Muscats? Seriously?

Agree that it's a good idea to plug or block the exhaust when laid up. I was thinking more of the OP who is on the move

    Muscats? Seriously?

I don't think it's a big issue on the great lakes or Canadian waterways though happy to be corrected. Biggest nuisance around here is racoons coming aboard if you're tied up and left food or garbage out.

Canadians doing the Great Loop US Border/Homeland Security

Right. Lots to sort through. The cruising permit and checking in should be the least of your concerns. I'm a Canadian and have looped a couple of times. My strategy has been to limit my time in the US to stay within visitor visa requirements, and spend enough time in Canada to maintain my...

    Anchoring in northern lake Huron

I agree with Ted. Holding is good, but in some areas weeds may be a challenge. I liked the Bruce on my last boat, but it wasn't great in weeds. My current Rocna works all the time. Sent from my moto g play (2021) using Trawler Forum mobile app

How to handle one engine failing?

In the sailing world conventional wisdom has always favored a locked shaft. But that doesn't make it fact :-). Maybe it's speed dependent or prop dependent. Off topic, but many electric drives are now touting generation capabilities for sailboats. I've been curious about that in terms of drag...

First Orcas, now Beware the Sunfish

I came across a sunfish basking on the surface in Nova Scotia many years ago. I thought it was an overturned boat or sea turtle at first, then a dead whale, then it swam slowly away when I circled it under sail. It was on its side, and seemed huge. I was on a 23' boat with about 18"...

    Cruising the Trent Severn Waterway

Stay between the markers and have fun. I'm at Lock 4, heading up to Gamebridge over the next week or so. I've been parked here for the last week or so watching big loopers heading north. Will keep an eye out for you. Big Chute is only doing big boats on week days. AFAIK that's the only...

    Marine Traffic Help

Satellites listen to Class B. Sometimes in heavy traffic areas the signal is lost, but they'll be tracked by satellites between Bermuda and the US. Whether MT chooses to share the data is a separate issue. Agree that there's lots of misinformation. Sent from my moto g play (2021) using...
