Bilge Keel - Rolling Chock installation

My understanding is that gyros are additive - a Seakeeper 5 can be swapped for two units - say a 3 and a 2 - with the same net effect. I like this idea. There isn't a big difference in total cost, and it allows lower power draw when less stabilization is required. It also allows deliberate...

    Down East Loop tips needed

Nice list. Congratulations, and best wishes for your future voyages. Quebec City is just as vibrant in the winter as the summer. I'm sure you'll enjoy future time there.

    Foiling power boats

I did that. Interesting stuff. NZ seems to be leading the charge. No surprise I guess, given the AC history and the vast open water distances.

Looking for fixer upper, 40ft plus…. southeastern U.S.

Heh. It's well intentioned, and increases the view count :-) Welcome aboard, by the way.

Bilge Keel - Rolling Chock installation

Thanks for sharing. My thought when I saw the pics is that they may change handling and ride quite a bit a higher speeds. I think you've mentioned here before that you speed up sometimes to improve the ride. Their placement will add lift at speed, I would think. It's all interesting.

I'd suggest you look at salvage boats as well. Some of them can be restored more easily than an old tired boat. These guys do business in big boats. I'm sure there are others. https://www.cooperss.com/assets?name=marine&id=2

Bargain slip/dry dock prices in southeast?

Check with Harbortowne in Tellico for on-shore storage. They've got a good size yard and I think allow DIY. Nice folks.

Raymarine Upgrade to Furuno and Autopilot Rotary Mechanical Drives

This is what I'd suggest, assuming the existing AP works to your satisfaction. You don't need to match brands between MFD and AP. The Raymarine will accept input from whatever you're using for nav.

    Solar breakthrough?

It's not just about cost/watt. Many of us are constrained by size as much as $$. I look forward to more power from the space I have available.

    Where is south enough

For you it's Paducah, Memphis, or pretty much anywhere on the Tennessee River. ETA: Grafton is open all winter as well.

I'd check the cabling and especially connectors before swapping out the radio. That's a specific alert that shouldn't have anything to do with setup or unit configuration. If you're thinking of adding a second antenna you could buy one and plug it in to confirm that the problem is with the unit.

Simrad MFD - course and heading do not align.

I think that's where the benefits lie, and for those using those capabilities it's very easy to see the value. As far as improving AP performance, it seems like a solution looking for a problem in most cases.

    Interesting boats

I saw them underway on the Oswego Canal in June. Very pretty boat.

Hynautic H40 Helm - Possible to Reverse?

You can reverse the indicator by switching two of the three connecting wires. I don't remember which two offhand, but it's in the documentation. I just went through that when moving my Raymarine AP between boats. The indicator was mounted upside down on one, and right-side up on the other.

    Foiling power boats

Not common around here! Can you point to examples? We may be stretching the trawler label a little thin here [emoji3]

    Survey

I think a fine halfway measure is to have your surveyor do a pre-survey. Essentially a detailed walk-around without moving or launching/hauling the boat. Then make an offer subject to further detailed survey/sea trial etc. A good surveyor can tell you a lot in a 2-3 hour consult. But if...

    Foiling power boats

I looked at a Candela runabout last summer. Pretty much everything was carbon fiber. It's interesting to watch along with the electrification of pleasure boats. I've seen a number of electric foiling surfboards recently. And there are a bunch of foiling sailboats. Clearly it's here to...

Simrad MFD - course and heading do not align.

I think the early advice you got here was spot on. Check for objects and cables close to the compass, then go through the complete commissioning setup. That will include swinging and calibrating the compass and centering the rudder indicator, confirming rudder limits, etc. I can appreciate...

    Sort of a loop

You check in by phone when entering Canada, and by the ROAM app when entering the US. Typically on that route you enter Canada at Brockville or Gananoque in the Thousand Islands, then stay in Canada until you reenter the US at the top of Lake Champlain.

I used to watch the Bras D'Or blasting around Halifax. Guess I'm dating myself [emoji3] 60+ knots with a 25,000 hp turbine. Not much range or load capacity. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMCS_Bras_d%27Or_(FHE_400)

40 something foot yachts - engine variables

You said at the beginning you didn't want to go fast. I meant to jump in earlier on the current question. I've done the trip north from the Gulf to Chicago and plan to do it again next spring. It's not a hp thing unless you want/need to cover ground fast. I've got a single 135 hp in a...

40 something foot yachts - engine variables

Those engines, and most since, have coolant/oil heat exchangers. So at prolonged low output oil temperature gets up to at least coolant temps. I think it's a non issue then. I cruised with a 6bta averaging 1.5 gph and never thought it did the engine any harm. Do the same with my current JD...
