    Cruising Upstream on the Mississippi

Very little time ashore on that trip. There aren't a lot of shoreside destinations. But it doesn't have to take two months. I did > 1000 miles of side trips on the Tennessee and Black Warrior Rivers. As Choices says, you probably don't want to go up the Lower Mississippi.

    Cruising Upstream on the Mississippi

Thanks for the referral! I left Mobile Feb 1 2022 and was in Chicago early April. Am on the Illinois River now heading south. Your boat dimensions shouldn't present any problems. The only way through the lakes for you will be the Welland Canal, which means entering Canada. You're only on...

    A return fuel what if?

That was me. Now I'm second guessing my claim. I can say for sure that my JD4045 TFM75 will not run or start with the fuel return closed, and my recollection was that the Cummins BT was the same. My theory when I observed this is that once the back pressure equals the fuel pump pressure the...

    A return fuel what if?

My experience with Cummins and JD is that the engine will stop immediately if return lines are closed. No harm to anything AFAIK. Open the valve and it runs again.

That is sad news. I'll miss his posts, here and on Cruisers Forum. Thanks for sharing

    Hard vs Round Chine

No foul... people tell me all the time that my boat is lobster style. The transom and stern shape looks a lot like the lobster boats. I'm not sure of the design provenance. Built in wood originally, then GRP from (I think) the same design.

    Hard vs Round Chine

Someone else converted it. It's still light, at about 35k pounds on a 49' waterline. Very easily driven. I can cruise at ten knots with the 135 hp JD4045 if I choose to. Very maneuverable, as the stern swings easily. I find the boat fine in quartering seas. It accelerates and surfs rather...

    Hard vs Round Chine

Mine is a utility boat that was carried aboard aircraft carriers. Similar to the 40 ft. Psneed changed the photo after my comment. Maybe he'll share it again. Here's mine.

    Hard vs Round Chine

That's a navy utility boat, originally. Classic design ?

American Tug 34 vs Downeast Cruiser

Which downeast cruiser? It's hard to compare a specific boat to a category. There are many *very* nice downeast cruisers...

    Interesting boats

That's a very interesting boat DDW. Must have been a fun development and build.

Heavy duty track/car for overhead lifting

Consult with a good sailboat rigger. They can work with what you've got, and choose the right car for the application.

Heavy duty track/car for overhead lifting

I'd stick with the existing Harken track and car(s). There are several competing products, but the Harken gear is as good as any IMO. It looks from your picture as though the load may not be centered on the car. I'd suggest replacing the car with one that has the traveller controls built in...

    Swim platform fender

I might be tempted to use a low stretch line for the forward spring. Agree that there should never be contact.

Is this a failed bottom paint job?

    Looks normal. Here's an example.

Prop shaft too short for ZINC

Prop nut anode is another choice, assuming there is clearance aft of the prop.

    Engine replacement

Agreed. But my point is that for OP's boat and intended purpose, the 6bt probably falls into the overpowered camp. Look at intended fuel consumption. What's the argument for going bigger in displacement? Yeah, maybe. But choosing a bigger motor simply because it weighs more is an expensive...

    Engine replacement

Well, it depends on how much hp you're using. I don't buy this need for continuous hp ratings in recreational boats. Who is running the Gardner at near maximum power for any length of time? 5 gph is 100 hp, and the 6bt will run at that output forever.

Trawler Curious , new to forum

Welcome. There has been lots of discussion here on fuel tank repair and replacement. It's a legitimate concern. Biggest issue often is just getting access to them. Shed kept fresh water boats age about 1/3 as fast as southern salt water boats in my experience. I wouldn't be scared off by...

    MS 34 mk 1 1978 - Thrusters

I don't think it would have been original equipment, so it could be anything. Generally there isn't a lot of required maintenance apart from anode replacement. Find the thruster inside and take a couple of pics. It's under the forward berth. Then we can ID it.

    Anchor Drag Alarm Feature?

I use Anchor Lite, the free version of Anchor Pro. It allows you to input direction and distance from current position, which I find pretty easy.

    1982 GB 36 single prop

Thanks. That makes sense. If optimizing efficiency means going faster with the same fuel burn, you're not going to see much if any improvement swapping props. Your current numbers look great. I wouldn't mess with a thing.

    1982 GB 36 single prop

If you're running at 1700 rpm and want to go a half knot faster the obvious effective way to do that is to bump up the throttle. Unless your existing prop is damaged or deficient there is likely to be little efficiency to be gained in prop swapping. Maybe I misunderstand the goals...

    Anchoring Technique - Three Questions

I found this article useful. https://kb.rocna.com/kb/Scope_vs_catenary I've been reflecting on my experience with all rope rodes - I traveled 15,000 miles without a windlass, anchoring pretty much every night. Mostly with a claw anchor and 6 feet of chain. The pull on the anchor was always...

1973 Gulfstar 36 trawler fuel level

Didn't those boats have integral FG tanks? If so it's probably hard to estimate, and could have varied through the production cycle.
