From sailboat to trawler...but which one?

Welcome Aboard! A 30ft trawler will have more space than a 30ft sailboat but not enough space for many couples. I`d suggest 35-40 ft as a better option, but space varies a lot boat to boat. Don`t exclude the GB42 that attracted you but a GB36 might well be enough boat.

    Sleeping Arrangements

Anchored at the bow, the bow faces the breeze. If you`ve good opening portlights, a hatch above, and somewhere air can flow out, the fwd cabin can be comfortable even without aircon, depending on location. The issue of wave slap is real, you are already aware, check potential boats carefully...

    After Removing teak deck

Not sure it`s that simple. Usual practice is to replace the stiffness/strength the teak afforded with 2 layers of fiberglass, fair it, and then paint, quite a job, I had the bow/fwd areas done on the IG36 where I chose not to put fresh teak at risk of weather.

Cure for Yanmar diesel engine smoke?

I looked at Lucas Oil Stabilizer online, it has admirers and haters. Seems to be an oil thickener, to stop oil losing viscosity when hot, good for reducing oil consumption in worn engines and reducing blow-by but, yours are 320 hour engines. Engines idled a lot without load can glaze the bores...

Cure for Yanmar diesel engine smoke?

When you add 2 additives simultaneously, one to fuel, one to engine oil, it`s difficult to know which if either caused the improvement. The bottles of Lucas oil additive you identify as "Oil Stabilizer" say the product is "Stop Leak".I`m wondering if it might be an oil thickener,increasing...

    New start batteries

If a "deep cycle" comes with a CCA rating it may be a "dual purpose" battery intended to be use for house and start purposes. If it`s purely intended as storage for house use, it`s more likely to be pure "deep cycle" . I can buy AGMs here both with, and without, a CCA rating.

Generator AGM Start Battery Suddenly Dead

Maybe you were unlucky and got a defective battery. The charge profiles for AGM and SLA overlap in some respects, I`m mixing them without any apparent issues pending replacing my main 200AH 8D SLAs which serve house and start, and charge bowthruster and genset AGMs. There are AGMs sold here with...

    Mooring Ball Long Term

We did it for 8 years. First up, ensure the mooring apparatus is adequate, esp. the block, get it serviced annually, and maintain the mooring lines. For bigger boats, a bridle is better than a single line. As indicated above, you need solar to keep things humming along. We had a cold plate...

    Blind void backing

I`ve used foam to strengthen body channels of a rally car, but not a boat. You need a hole into the void to pour it in, and it can be hard to tell how far it expanded, heat was the indicator as well as sound. Holes at various heights to see where it gets to could help. Interesting stuff to use...

    Funny story...

Here the Maritime Authority licenses the laying of private moorings. In some areas it`s common for boats to pick up an OPM(Other People`s Mooring) in a mooring field and vacate if required, which rarely happens. KMYC (Ku Ring Gai Motor Yacht Club) has multiple moorings in one such field, it...

Choosing where to base power catamaran. How important is a nearby haulout facility?

Haulout ability may be less limited at marinas which have a "railway" type cradle system instead of/as well as a Travelift system. My previous marina had one capable of taking large wide boats, and charged for it accordingly. Not common to get a problem requiring urgent haulout but it happens...

Finn 8 Puffinn TCMYC?? Question for Aus members.

Toronto is on Lake Macquarie, my wild guess is Toronto Cruising Motor Yacht Club. But I think there is a Royal MYC at Toronto. R A McKay is a long standing yacht broker at Toronto, best give him a call. TF member Bogranjac from WA cruised a Finn 8 on the NSW coast a while back, we met up with...

    Key fob went into water

Good find! One thing I learned was never get on/off the boat holding keys,of any kind. This stems from an experience juggling masses of files using a hotel elevator, car keys with remote fob in hand, exiting the elevator. Who`d have thought the keys could find the the narrow gap between door and...

    Interesting boats

The South Steyne is for sale. I`m an unashamed admirer of this vessel, a former Manly Ferry which serviced the Sydney-Manly route for many years before a fire saw her retired, and into a series of refits, owners, and uses. Built in the UK, she was delivered by sea, including through the Suez...

    windlass

So true. The footswitches are near impossible to keep sealed dry and clean. However, if you have one which is not producing any activity, before digging it out of the sealant and replacing it, try deluging it with WD40 or other water displacer/cleaner/lube product, it got mine functioning again...

Advice on new boat buy please/ underpropped?

Pic 3 has some uneven areas which could be old repairs, but could be other things, like where the old a/f lost adhesion and came away, brush marks, etc. Pic 4 shows several odd indents in the transom which look like unrepaired conical grinds. I can`t enlarge the pics much, more enlargement might...

Advice on new boat buy please/ underpropped?

As there seems to be some uncertainty about prop size as fitted is, might be good if the mechanical surveyor sees it out of the water. If you combine surveys it should be possible, if not the general surveyor should be able to ascertain. Leaving the over/under propping to experts contributing...

    Music favs

Sing It Back, by Irish band Moloko. The tune is an "earworm", this wholesome sweetened version is kind of denatured compared to some weird techno grunge live versions by the same band which I spotted online. The sound and video reminds me of Jamiroquai.
