    Ford Lehman 135sp coolant question

When I had Lehmans I used to top off at the header tank cap. Even after I fitted expansion bottles. There is a petcock on the manifold you open when topping up, when it overflows you are full. I would not top up the plastic expansion bottle to the top level. It`s intended to drain back as the...

    Charging LifePO4 batteries.

SteveK, remember I suggested it was time to unbox those panels sitting idle? Think of the benefits of solar, nagging away (like me) at those batteries. And a silent somnolent genset.

    Twin Diesels versus single

I`ve owned both and never had an engine failure, single or twin. But there is comfort in twins, and they are better for maneuvering, better even than single plus thrusters both ends, imo. My understanding of single engine ocean crossers is they usually have a get home wing engine, often run for...

2nd start of fire in electrical equipment, what are your experiences ?

You`ve lost faith in Victron. You`ll always be anxious about their equipment, you are sensitized to their products forever. Remove and replace with another make. Job done.

    Interesting boats

This Australian built timber 50ft motor sailer looks a big solid boat. Unless the guy to the right is "vertically challenged" rudder and prop are substantial. https://www.boatsonline.com.au/boats-for-sale/used/power-boats/ray-norton/306897

2nd start of fire in electrical equipment, what are your experiences ?

My electrician strongly recommends Victron controllers for a planned solar upgrade. This thread is worrying while informative; more light and less heat would help.

    What shower soap to use

Doubt I`d use body wash to do the dishes either. We use soap, no problems.

Whales At Play - New Hampshire

Once we share the marine environment with sea creatures, regulations or not, interactions are inevitable. Doctors here are working on reattaching a surfer`s leg after it was bitten off by a great white. A miraculous save was performed by a man on the beach using his dog`s lead as a tourniquet...

Whales At Play - New Hampshire

Interesting, seems the whale is a regular. Australia has regulations on approaching a whale, and whale and calf, but tough to stop them approaching you.

Whales At Play - New Hampshire

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-07-24/whale-capsizes-fishing-boat-off-new-hampshire-coast/104136336 Nothing malicious, they just surfaced somewhere else than where they dived but forgot to check the surface above was clear. Fortunately no one injured but the boat came second by a long way.

    Cracks in coolant hose

Often you can buy hose sections at auto shops to match existing. Doesn`t have to be an exact match. You can trim length etc to get the section you want. Sometimes you cut what you want out of a longer piece. Can save a lot of hassle getting OEM stuff which is no better.

    High Oil Pressure- Yanmar 6LYA-STP

Accepting the change immediately follows the oil and filter change, and if (as it sounds) this is the first oil change post purchase, the oil drained may have been of lower viscosity for some reason than what replaced it, which is presumably the correct grade. Worn engines may be dosed with oil...

2000 Selene 55 for <700K AUD https://www.boatsonline.com.au/boats-for-sale/used/power-boats/selene-55-pilothouse/314645 Sure its 24 years old and has a single, but hours are good, just looking at it risks half a mongrel. (AUD buys 66c USD) Maybe Kit_L`s next boat??

    Humor

A man is dining alone in a hotel restaurant when the lady dining alone at the next table sneezes violently and to his surprise her left glass eye flies out, which he fortuitously catches and returns to her. The lady thanks him profusely, and invites him to join her for dinner. She insists on...

    Cracks in coolant hose

Best way to an intelligent conversation by far. That offending hose is just aged, few things last forever, though the manufacture location may be relevant.

    Solar Panel

Steve, 440watts of panel, assuming 8 hours of sun, and assuming 50% output, could extract nearly 150 amps a day. Surely that`s worth reduced genset/alternator run time. Especially as you have the panels sitting in a box. You just need some mounts, wire, fuses and regulators and you might already...

Advice on new boat buy please/ underpropped?

What are the features of the CBB (?CHB) hull which cause you to class it as full displacement? Certainly agree an FD hull won`t plane, an SD may try to but with limited partial success, maybe more if overpowered. The CHB was sold in Australia, from where Auscan and I hail, as a Clipper 34 and is...

    Interesting boats

This big 1993 Tolley may be of interest. Don`t forget the favorable (though diminishing currently)exchange rate, the AUD buys 67c of a USD. Interesting how much coring there is in hull, keel, etc, not sure about that...

Tell Me All About Carver Vessels

Pascoe, rest his soul, was quite unkind to the Island Gypsy 44 too. I recall inspecting a Carver with unfinished edges of fiberglass inside, suggesting the quality of finish lacking. If a house builder can`t get the finish right what lies below? But this is a boat, not a house. Another TF member...

    Bilge Pump "Blue's"

Pictures show some issues but no blue fluid, implying despite comments on the wiring, the bilge pump has done its job and removed the liquid. Suggesting the pump is working as intended. I loathe those "flipper" switches, they gunk up, stick, don`t work, all variety of reasons to replace with...
