Buying a Former Charter Boat... Good or Bad?

In Australia, a paying guest charter boat has to be "In Survey", with inspections required. If there too, it might well be a plus. However, a charter company contemplating sale just might defer maintenance where they could, then again so might anyone. Best to judge it on its merits, but I doubt...

Forum Update - We're back! Ask your questions here.

Interesting. Windows 11, Firefox. Ads indicated Google as provider, could be closed, but when I closed asked why I closed. Not happening today and may it stay that way.

    Instrument lights

My IG did that. So if you had the anchor light on overnight, you had 2 sets of instrument lights on too. I added another switch.

    My confidence is being effected.

From my old Mod days, an OP can`t correct a thread title. Even if an error is recognized. But a Mod can.

    My confidence is being effected.

It`s an odd thread. I suspect the source of loss of confidence leading to activity limiting anxiety is internal rather than external. The OP gave the example of the genset "will it start when we reach destination" as a worry source, but later disclosed a litany of issues with the genset that...

    Insurance companies prejudice towards liveaboards

If you lie in the proposal it`s non disclosure or worse, and your cover is at risk. I can`t imagine insurers universally have a pathological dislike of liveaboards, it`s more likely due to higher incidence of claims. We`re not liveaboards but I like having liveaboards nearby, mainly for enhanced...

    My confidence is being effected.

Is this anxiety purely boat focused, or more general? If it`s just the boat, why? If it`s more general, look for a reason. It sounds like you are transposing something related to your occupation. If you think about it rationally, you are probably already doing reasonable precautionary...

More info on the Monk-designed boat we just bought

Select an anchor or range of anchors that interest you, check what the mfr recommends. If you fall between sizes, go up. I think anchor mfrs want to sell you as much anchor as they can, but others will tell you mfrs know zilch, and to just go bigger, and bigger...... As to your mooring, are we...

Newby from the Great Salt Lake

eags84, you are asking the right questions. It`s both unusual and impressive in a newcomer to trawler boating, I hope it works out for you. In Australia, but query elsewhere, there are commercially managed syndicates of as many as 10 owners. There operate at our marina using Integrity 380s. One...

    Gas Lift Struts

It looked an easy swapover, until I found the attachment bolt flanges of non stainless material are too rusted to hold to undo the securing nut. I might have to remove the fittings attached to boat and hatch to cut off the end fitting of the 2 500mm struts, unless I can do it in place with the...

    Music favs

KnotYet, as you appreciate Pat Metheny, you might like Yutaka. A Japanese American from I think California, using some Japanese instruments, for a relaxed Brazilian sound. With some effort I collected the 3 CDs he recorded. https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=yutaka+musician

    Wanted boat with specific needs

The Beneteau ST 42 has 2 "compact" shower/ heads, immediately adjacent. Not IPS. ? it has a cored hull. I`d query the wisdom of IPS, that`s not the question, so I won`t.

    Gas Lift Struts

Since 2020 I`ve endured 3 gas lift hatch struts that don`t. Checking Ebay, they`re not expensive. You need to measure up, they come in a range of lengths and power/strengths. The heavy fibreglass FB access hatch lifter above the stairs, 500mm extended, showed a bent 8mm central shaft. I found a...

    Worth saving genset?

Likely a good old Kubota powered MDKD 6.5. If the OP really has no use for it, maybe, but a future owner might. Harder to sell without genset than with, and a beast to remove. I`m sure it has value but from here, ??how much. Try an advert at 2K?

    Big sailboat sunk by tornado

Suing widows and orphans is rarely popular. Not sure being the moving party in litigation is,without more, automatically preferable. You have the burden of proof, the Defendant can snipe and put you to proof. You may be opening a battle you can`t win. But yes, far too little hard information to...

    Music favs

This is the Pat Metheny Group with Minuano. Shortest version I could find, still long enough for a bathroom break. I suppose it`s smooth jazz, but it`s Brazilian too, and at one stage almost classical. Tuneful, played by people who seem to enjoy what they do. Worth a listen.

    Freezer Power Use Issue

A previous boat, originally the CYCA committee and rescue boat, had an oversize power hungry fridge. I reduced it`s capacity simultaneously improving insulation by adding polystyrene insulation in cut into blocks from a larger thick sheet, to the inside walls. Nigel Calder published a useful...

    Is this asbestos?

That is useful. Even lab tests here were not super expensive, maybe $65 AUD. If you DIY it, how do you dispose, it can`t go out in the weekly trash. Maybe there is a municipal facility, but there might be questions about origin etc. Is DIY removal lawful there?

    Hino 210HP engines

With the hull clean/antifoul deferral, the external strainers won`t have been cleaned either, limiting seawater take up. That plus the drag of the shell farm on the hull could be a significant contributor to temps, among other things. Not hauling and surveying pre purchase has its downside. But...
