QSM 11 661 hp - Major Service Questions

Sorry for the tardy responses...long work day. Gsholz, I just re-read all the Seaboard materials this past weekend and have the "chart" Tony has shared w/ fuel burn @ various RPM. I'm heading out this weekend and going to compare my results against his recommendations. High Wire, with regard...

QSM 11 661 hp - Major Service Questions

Good morning, all. In April I purchased a boat with twin Cummins QSM 11s, rated at 661 hp. The engines are 2005, and they had 790 (port) and 815 (starboard) hours. The previous owner had the boat for about 6 years. I have all of his service records, and I followed up recently with the selling...

Glendinning In-Limit Switch - Grand Banks Eastbay 47

Okay, thanks to gsholz's encouragement, I gave it another go (poking at the in-limit switch actuator). Voila, it popped out! Back in business...now I just have to go un-jump the in-limit wires on the panel. Bill, glad it is working, I'm with you, there's no way a human could get back in there!

Glendinning In-Limit Switch - Grand Banks Eastbay 47

Thanks gsholz...that was my effort, but no amount of manipulating the rubber gasket on in-limit switch did any good. But worth another try...it may just be "stuck". One can always hope!

Glendinning In-Limit Switch - Grand Banks Eastbay 47

On a recent trip, my Glendinning cablemaster failed to retrieve the cable. It has power, it will pay out cable, but selecting "In" results in nothing. I jumped the in-limit wires, and, as expected, it works. So I need a new switch. But here's my problem: I can't figure out how to access the...

    GB eastbay

We have a new to us GB Eastbay 47 FB. Took possession in late April, have about 50 hours underway so far (Connecticut to Chesapeake in April, and just last week Chesapeake to Maine). Our out of water survey (two days, about 12 hours total surveyor time), engine survey, and in-water survey/sea...

    Purchasing boat sight unseen

We just did this on our current boat. Went down to Florida for two weeks this winter to look at boats. Found one we wanted, made an offer, back and forth, owner wouldn't budge, so we walked from that one, and, while in Florida, made an offer "sight unseen" (had pictures, talked to selling broker...

New Jersey Transit Outside (not ICW)

All - I'm heading north from the Chesapeake to Maine this coming week. Intention is to head from Kent Island, MD to Belmar, NJ tomorrow (relative has a house there) and spend a couple of days before continuing on. Question is regarding NJ marine forecast as I don't know the waters well. Came...

Surface Temperature of Marine Air Compressor Units

Thanks, David. The paint color was more of a "cream" or "yellow" than actual brown. I'm no expert on these things, but it wasn't functioning, and it was running 50% hotter than the other units when it had been running due to a refrigerant leak. One way or another, it now *is* toast.

Surface Temperature of Marine Air Compressor Units

Thought I would follow up with "the end of the story" for any interested. On the day of sea trial - the day after my original post where the tech at the seller's location reported the a/c unit in question working "perfectly" - the a/c unit was not functioning. The control panel worked, but no...

    Aluminum boat corrosion

You (or he) may also want to post this on aluminumalloyboats.com. There are a ton of threads on galvanic and electrolytic corrosion, and many aluminum boat experts (builders/welders) who will offer advice. (I used to own a 26' welded aluminum fishing boat.)

Cracks under non-skid plates in engine room

C lectric, I realize I misread your response. Definitely going to have the surveyor inspect tomorrow. But I feel pretty confident the risers aren't structural. They are short, irregular pieces that are only under the plates

Cracks under non-skid plates in engine room

Thanks for the replies, great advice! I'll definitely grind it out and take a look, and follow Comodave's advice (echoed by others) to go the epoxy route. And, Bill, if I learn anything from grand banks, I'll let you know! But I'm almost positive these are just straps of wood glassed onto the...

Surface Temperature of Marine Air Compressor Units

Thanks, all. Not looking to replace a working unit, or to try to argue for money out of escrow on a working unit. Was really just wondering if the explanation for the difference made sense..(If the surveyor hadn't documented this, it wouldn't have been in my radar at all.) Appreciate the input...

Cracks under non-skid plates in engine room

We've just purchased 2005 Grand Banks Eastbay 47. Although the boat was in good clean condition, while following the surveyor around, I noticed typical bilge "gunk" under the non-skid plates. So, following the sale, I pulled those up and cleaned it all out. I noticed the support for those...

Surface Temperature of Marine Air Compressor Units

I'm in the final stages of taking possession of a 2005 Grand Banks Eastbay 47. The sale has closed, but there is an escrow account to address any mechanical items that arise on sea trial (New England boat, sale completed over the winter, boat going in the water this week). On the initial out of...

"Roll Call" For Gourmet Cruisers and Island Gypsies

Timr, we just sold our GC32 (hull #007) last month after a single year of ownership, so my experience is limited. But we put 150 hours on it last year, all on the Chesapeake Bay, from Harve de Grace to the Potomac, and up the Potomac to DC and back. We loved the boat. We sold it only because...

The yachtworld (US) still works...you just need to: 1) click the green "search" button on the home page (don't apply any filters, just click the button); 2) when the results come up, click the "clear all" (filters) button; 3) then choose the filters you want - length, year, engines, fuel type...

    Advice on Refit

You could literally be talking about my boat - 36' Halvorsen that I purchased in January. Like yours, my survey showed nothing major, so I set about working on the minor issues (e.g., surveyor literally noted the Weems & Plath clock wasn't working, so I put a AA battery in it) and slightly less...

"Roll Call" For Gourmet Cruisers and Island Gypsies

One more thing...I purchased an original copy of the September 2003 edition of "Motor Boats Monthly" (out of print now) from a seller on ebay in the UK. The cover is the 32 GC. Happy to scan/email to anyone interested, just PM me.

"Roll Call" For Gourmet Cruisers and Island Gypsies

I closed our our purchase of "Gatsby", GC hull #7 ("007" on the placard) two weeks ago today, and brought her down from Harve de Grace, Maryland, to her new home of Deale, Maryland, a week ago Sunday. 6 hour cruise on the Chesapeake and literally saw only one other vessel the entire way - a CG...

Gourmet Cruiser Owner's Manual / Guide

Thanks rsn! Previous owner was an airline pilot and took great care of the boat. Prior to awlgripping it, he added spray rails at the front based on the manufacturer's specs for later hulls #s. I don't have any real experience yet, but based on videos seems to make a big difference in...

Gourmet Cruiser Owner's Manual / Guide

Hello, all. I just purchased a 2003 Halvorsen Gourmet Cruiser. As best I can tell, I'm the 4th owner. If there originally was any owner's manual or guide, it doesn't appear to have survived the ownership changes. Are you aware of any manuals or documents available online, or do you have a soft...
