    Mysterious wire...

The wire is going back to his ignition switch. It’s hot when he turns on the ignition. I can’t say what the wires purpose was. I would have guessed that it’s a field activation for the alternator.

    Fresh water pump lifespan

I have not had good luck with Shurflo pumps. The motors have never been the problem. The problem has always been with the pump head. I switched to Marco pumps.

Bow thruster -weak altering watering 1-y/o battery

Likely a defective cell. This caused the remaining cells to be over charged which boiled all the water out. Also possible that you have a defective battery charger that just continuously cooks the battery.

    Trawlers and skiffs

I have 54’ of boat and a 1500lb crane. While the weight is not an issue the length would give me trouble. I currently have a 12’ dingy. Even at 12’ I have 18” sticking off the back deck. There is only enough room for me to walk around the rest of the dingy. I could add 5 more feet of dingy...

    Knowing a "hot" marina

I can make up scenario's that could explain what you were told and what you experienced but then it would mean your boat was leaking AC current. What is more likely is that you weren't told everything or weren't told correctly what was found and what was changed.

This is the most common scenario.

    Knowing a "hot" marina

As Fleming said this is a complicated subject. I often need to refer back to my training notes to refresh my memory on everything. A boat that has a lot of running gear and zinc can find itself protecting the entire marina which would lead to excessive zinc consumption. Usually, a galvanic...

Will You Go Broke On A Boat? - 1999 Viking 60 SportYatch

It is so easy for an inexperienced individual to see so much boat for what on the surface appears to be a reasonable price. No one ever thinks to ask what would this boat cost new and why such a big depreciation difference. Well this boat would cost close to $2,000,000 if bought new today...

Will You Go Broke On A Boat? - 1999 Viking 60 SportYatch

We are talking about a boat that can do 22 kts if you can afford the 125 gallons per hour. Granted, you can slow down to 9kts and it’s probably a 1 gallon per nautical mile boat. I am assuming that you will still be in the MAN’s allowable operating window. Big diesels like these have minimum...

We know it's not a Hatteras. The boat was identified in post #35.

Help. Ford Lehman Dies at worst of times

My first thought is clogged filter but with two issues occurring simultaneously I suspect there is a very serious issue. You start by removing the injectors and seeing what happens when you turn the engine by hand. If it easily turns by hand and no fluid comes out of the injector holes then...

POR 15 Tank Sealer for a gas tank?

I once repaired a gasoline tank. The tank was removed from a race car neutralized and the crack was grounded and tig welded. I once repaired a diesel tank. The tank was removed from its location but could not be removed from the boat. Because of the location welding was deemed unwise. After...

POR 15 Tank Sealer for a gas tank?

So POR-15 does make a gasoline tank repair kit. The only negative I have hear on POR-15 is that it hardens and becomes brittle. This leads to hairline cracks which can allow moisture penetration which could lead to future leaking. As regards to safety, I wouldn’t have a boat like that with...

Will You Go Broke On A Boat? - 1999 Viking 60 SportYatch

I find this boat to actually be well priced and appears to be well maintained. It is a Bill Garden design, originally built as an Ocean 54 which is 60’ if you measure the bow sprit and swim platform. However those High Performance diesel engines come with a less than stellar reputation. They...

Will You Go Broke On A Boat? - 1999 Viking 60 SportYatch

Just my opinion, if you can’t afford the down payment, you can’t afford the boat. Maintenance and moorage will run you $3,000 a month. With boats you either pay now with cash or you pay later when you try to sell. Either way you will be paying. The way you are approaching this you will be...
