    Camano Troll thru hulls

Boats leave the factory with only a few thru-hulls installed. Then more get added as systems are added to the boat. Generator gets one, AIr Conditioner gets one, water maker gets one, wash down system gets, depth sounder gets one and so on. Of course these add ons are always different and and...

Sleipner/Side Power Thruster Failures in new units

To take this seriously I would need to know which exact model is being installed. Also what has Sliepner’s response been to this?

    Holding tanks

I use a Gobius to monitor my water tank. It’s been very reliable.

    Time for Lithium House

We have a winner here! Good job. To the other nay sayer comments. No one is suggesting you should buy the cheapest Amazon LFP battery. All the LFP batteries recommend on trawler forum come with robust BMS’s built in. ABYC admitted that they were unable to get a LFP bank to catch fire no...

Turning a 7 gallon bucket into a propane locker

Comodave is correct. If gas can find a way into the boat then it’s not safe. Safe is all that counts. Now if it is impossible for a gas leak to enter the boat then it’s safe.

What do you think the cost of sailing 15000 miles is in a catamaran vs an up to 60feet trawler

With a trawler you have three real expenses. Fuel, engine depletion and boat depreciation. Most likely you won’t need to rebuild the engines meaning you will most likely only need to deal with boat depreciation. With the cat you will have two real expenses. Sails depletion and boat...

    New limitations on Starlink coastal?

Your link leads to the availability map, not the coverage map. Definitions with Starlink are difficult. As of today, I know no one who has lost coverage while boating the inside passage. Not saying it couldn’t happened. I do know that revenue is important to Starlink, if they start cutting...

    Insurance companies prejudice towards liveaboards

I have never had a liveaboard issue with insurance. I deal with Red Shield. They only write policies on the West Coast and require riders for heading to Mexico or Alaska. By controlling their environment they control their risk. I recommend talking to Peter at Novamar Insurance in Seattle...

    Fly bridge enclosure condensation problem

Sounds like Stamoid. Your best bet is to use a simple absorbent Shammy to remove all the condensation. Another alternative is to pump heated air into the space like a car defroster.

    Above water line hull paint

While not a GB, I have painted the same area on my boat. I recommend that you do not use a one part epoxy paint. Such paints are fine for a boot stripe but won’t hold up for large areas. Upgrade at least to a two part epoxy or go with Axel Seal.

    Time for Lithium House

Cells just fail. When my L-16 batteries were old I tested every cell individually. I found two bad cells. By disconnecting those batteries from the system I was able to get more usage out of the bank. This was an emergency work around as I was transiting when I discovered my bank was...

    LifePo4 battery charger recommendations

I didn’t understand these either. Then there is the part about Thermal runaway, while an issue with some Lithium chemistries it really is not an issue with LifePo4 and a decent BMS.

Magnum has left, Xantrex has you covered

So quickly people forget their history. Once upon a time there was a great inverter/charger manufacture call Heart Interface. They were the best but they failed to evolve and were eventually acquired by Xantrex. It didn't really bother us as the new kid on the block was Trace and they were by...

Magnum has left, Xantrex has you covered

I can only find evidence of the MS2812-G being discontinued. I did find evidence of Xantrex claiming Magnum is abandoning the MS28-12 line but it is not listed on Magnum’s discontinued product line. Only the MS2812-G is listed. Now maybe Xantrex knows something that the rest of the world does...

Composite thru hulls: good or bad idea ?

I have always been a no composite under the water line person. Imagine my shock to find a composite transducer hidden out of sight in my engine room. It’s so old that it was decommissioned by the PO. I will be replacing it with a new NMEA 2000 transducer which is made by Airmar. Naturally...

Magnum has left, Xantrex has you covered

Sensata Technologies is the owner of Magnum Dimensions. As a public company they would be required to publish the sale of a division. There is no such news. The other possibility is that Sensata was reducing the number of offerings but I see nothing in the financial news to suggest this. The...

    Webasto exhaust thru hull

You don’t need a backing plate as there is no load on the exhaust tube. I would seal the exposed core after you cut the hole. This would prevent any water damage if the rubber gasket fails at its job or it you developed an interior leak that happened to find its way to the exhaust tube.

    Wanted boat with specific needs

LOA of 42 means a 39’ boat. It is next to impossible to stuff 2 heads and 2 state rooms in that little of space. You will need to look for an aft cabin model and even with that you will need to settle for a v-berth and a wet head. My knowledge of boats with IPS is limited to Rivera’s and I...

Northern Lights 8kw Diesel Generator. (8800 hours)

Most likely it’s a Kubota D1105 engine. Research longevity on that engine. My experience, if maintained it’s good for 30,000 hours.

    Starlink Mini

I have not yet been able to test the mini on a 50-60’ boat. I believe it will work but I can’t say it’s guaranteed. I have played with a mini and it works very well. I suspect that the mini with a mesh node or two should easily cover a 50-80’ boat.

    Changing Battery Size? 4x L16 to 8x GC2?

If you just swap from FLA to LifePo4 you won’t cause a fire. You might destroy an alternator or you might destroy the batteries themselves. LiFePo4 is less likely to be involved in a fire than FLA batteries. Of course, ignorant people go “oh, boat fire”, “boat had LiFePo4 batteries”, “must...
